Font Bureau Developed Custom Typefaces for WebOS

Fonts Palm WebOSThe Font Bureau, a Boston based typographic firm, has announced that they designed and developed a set of fonts specifically for the Palm Pre and WebOS. The fonts, named Prelude, were designed by Font Bureau co-founder David Berlow, who has also developed fonts for Microsoft and Apple.

Prelude is an original sans serif design of simple, generous letterforms which provide a clear, comfortable, and inviting experience for navigation and readability. A family of six fonts was developed for the Palm Pre. A related set of fonts, named Apres, which are tuned specifically for use in print and marketing, were also developed by Berlow and the Font Bureau.

Analyst: Sprint Stores Being Drip-Fed New Pre's

Pre drip fedJ.P. Morgan analyst Paul Coster chimes in this morning with a new report on the Palm Pre stock situation. First off, Mr. Coster estimates that Palm and Sprint have shipped at least 100,000 devices so far. He estimates that for the launch weekend the average Sprint store received about 40 units, with 2-5 at the average Radio Shack store and 2-4 at the typical Best Buy. He says that about 50,000 more units have shipped since the weekend, with Sprint stores getting about 10-15 units every 2 days that are mostly going to customers on waiting lists. (via Tech Trader Daily.)

"Sprint stores are being drip-fed devices without much certainty or uniformity regarding timing and quantity." Coster's advice to people who want to buy the phone is to head for the local Radio Shack; he says the stores "seem to have been neglected by eager early adopters."

Doom Hacked Onto the Pre

Doom Palm PreIt's been a busy last couple of days for Palm Pre hackers, who've been poring over the webOS ROM image and finding out what makes it tick - and how to make it tick different. The latest milestone: a port of classic PC first-person shooter Doom (or technically, PrBoom, an improved version based on the original source code).

Sure, we've been able to do this on our Palm OS devices for ages, but it's nice to see id's 1993 masterpiece continue to appear on new platforms. Credit is due to #webos-internals IRC denizen Sargun, who seems to have achieved this feat by installing Debian on the Pre. You can check out the videos after the jump.

Jon Rubinstein Appointed CEO of Palm

Ruby CEOPalm, Inc. today announced that its board of directors has appointed Jon Rubinstein to lead the company as Chairman and CEO upon the departure of Ed Colligan, who is stepping down after sixteen years of leadership at the company. Colligan plans to take some time off, then join Elevation Partners.

"I am very excited about taking on this expanded role at Palm," said Rubinstein. "Ed and I have worked very hard together the past two years, and I'm grateful to him for everything he's done to help set the company up for success. With Palm webOS we have ten-plus years of innovation ahead of us, and the Palm Pre is already one of the year's hottest new products. Sprint Treo 600 Case Settlement

Handspring Treo 600 ~ Click for LargerA class action lawsuit against Palm and Sprint has recently been settled. The case involved customers who purchased a Sprint Treo 600 before October 27, 2004. The suit claimed that Palm and Sprint made misleading statements in regard to the availability of Bluetooth and WiFi expansion cards for the Treo 600.

Our more astute readers will recall that no such cards ever came to be for the Treo 600 (or any other Palm OS Treo for that matter). Without admitting any wrongdoing, Palm and Sprint have agreed to settle the case by issuing eligible customers a Sprint service credit or Palm store credit.

Some interesting nuggets and hints of potential new features and devices have been spotted within the 200 MB ROM file.

Most notably, PreCentral reports that there are multiple references to a "pixie" device, which is widely thought to be the code name for the leaked Palm Eos smartphone. MSN and AOL icons have also been found within the webOS rom image. Speculation is rife that these could be included as potential forthcoming Synergy supported services.
