The first pictures of the device have shown up on msmobiles.com, of all places. It is a GSM smartphone and runs Palm OS 5.2.1. It has a rotatable display that flip over to table mode, much like the Sony NX series. It has a external antenna and built in VGA camera on the back.

It is expected to become available in Europe at some point in 2004. Many other specific specs about the smartphone are not known yet. As always, more info when it becomes available.

Cool phone, but I think I like the Treo 600 layout better. I may like this one better once I know the resolution of the screen.

I'm very disappointed with Samsung's Palm Phones. The only model that is currently interesting an available is the SPH-i500 from Sprint, and everything I've read and heard about this phone is that it is a BIG flop. The nearly identical Kyocera 7135 seems to be winning the consumer sentiment right now.

That said, I've been holding out hopes that someone would bring a decent PDA phone out that uses Palm OS 5.x. After using a Tungsten for about a year, I'm hooked on this OS and don't want to go backwards. Why should I pay nearly $400 and commit a 2 year contract for an outdated OS? Samsung is dangling the carrot of a Palm 5.x phone now for almost 6 months, with a new one now in the mix, and still nothing on the market????? This is ridiculous in business terms.

The Handspring Treo 600 seems to be the way to go unless you gotta have the flip. I'm leaning heavily that way as soon as local number portability is a reality next month.

what are you talking about slider?! a big flop?! is that why sprint cant keep the phones on the shelf and the reason they are back-ordered just about everywhere? and the 7135 is BETTER?! you HAVE to be kidding me. that thing is a total BRICK compared with the sph-i500. who gives a crap about an MP3 player? ive used both phones, and the form and function of the i500 simply blows away the kyocera.

I would have to say that you are wrong about the i500 being a "flop" I have been using it for 4 months now and could not be happier. the battery life is amazing, and with the small battery on the phone is as light as most smaller phones. The phone works great, and although i do sometimes miss os5, for business purposes and a few games, it works for me...

The i500 doesn't have an SD dlot, isn't that right? I couldn't use a PDA without one, which is why I went with the Kyocera. It is like havin a PC with a 100 MB HDD.

WOW!! Sorta looks like SGH-D700

gfunkmagic @ 10/13/2003 7:24:45 PM #
WOW! That rotating screen looks alot like the D700 IMO! Its great to see more PalmOs smartphones appearing. With a 320x320 rez screen and hopefully min 1MP camera, this thing shoudl rock!

However, what ever happenned to the SGH-i500? Samsung should have released that phone by now. Too bad they had to delay it until next year...

Last week, Samsung announced that the SGH-i500 would not be available until 2004.

Personally, I hope they kill the 500 and dedicate their resources to getting the 505 out the door sooner. This is a sweet looking smartphone!

Dude, you gotta hand it to Samsung, they put out quite impressive technology. I most likely will not be buying, but i will deffinately drool over it.

Sorry if i missed it, but will it be GSM? or CDMA?

Also, i like it as it has v-graffiti too. (though i suppose a keyboard could be good (treo600) but i've been disapointed w/ most keyboards.. except the Tungsten C/W (guess thats why RIM has the pattern patented))

... nevermind i missed it, i looked at the story again & saw the GSM (yeah!!) & looking at it more if it were attractively priced i would deffinately consider it. having the screen twist like that makes it ever so much more usable ... yes sir i like it ! & if it were to have an SD card slot that was easily accessable it would totally kick too ! (or i suppose i could be persuaded w/ a micro memory stick (samsung did liscence the memorystick stuff))

I like it - No need to waste space on Graffiti or Keyboard

I looked at the front+back pics at msmobiles.com ...anyone see a slot for the stylus? It is normally on the back... maybe it pops out on the top? This thing is supposed to support virtual graffiti so does it come with a virtual stylus too??

Where do you talk?

I guess after you swivel and close with the ear piece is down. Unless you use the speaker phone do you hold it up side down to talk?

Vaporware, product announcements and the media

The Ugly Truth @ 10/14/2003 12:21:35 AM #
It's all a big game. I'm surprised Samsung didn't just skip a year and announce their 2005 model that comes with the videophone. Since they already have a working prototype, why not just announce it as a "new" model and take the wind out of the Treo 600's sails?

I strongly agree on that, Samsung is selling vaporware in the smartphone market for some time now.

Just bring the Treo 600 to Mexico, I'm sold with it, don't need a plasma on my phone =)

By the way, can I just insert my current SIM card on a Treo 600 and get SMS, MMS and Mail that my current provider offer even if they dont carry Treo 600??

Thank you

(first post hehe)

This is kind of rediculous considreing the SGH-500 was announced months ago and there is still no sign of it, not even a possible release date. I like this design but why dont they focus on getting thier first palm 5 phone to market before out dating it with a new version. I mean even Sony has the decency to let you believe watever product you bought will be top of the line for at least 3 months before showing off a new handheld. I actualy wanted the SGH-500 but bought a Treo 300 as a stop gap measure and have now upgraded to a Treo 600 and will never go back to a palm/phone/whatever without a thumb board (I always sucked at graph). Even though I would consider this device if they let you use the number keys for T-9 text input, but as far as I know in the one model they have released they don which is a shame, considering its almost a keyboard. You can def get pretty good at T-9 if you use it alot, I was in london and all people do there is txt msg and I got damn fast with T-9. In any case mabey by the time Im ready to upgrade form my T600 in a year and a half or so this will be hitting the market....

treo 300 was just a stop gap, now that i have my 600 life is good :o)

sorry, haven't finished my comment...

you have written:

> Samsung is showing a new

this is not exactly correct - this phone is not presented by Samsung - so that everybody can see it.

this phone was presented to me during intereview with :

Gabi Schindler, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, Palmsource

Albert B. Chu, Vice President, Business Development, PalmSource

Chris Dunphy, Director - Competitive Analysis, PalmSource

... and there were no Samsung people in the room, just PalmSource people.

I have more information and more photos about this phone, but I will post them later on (in 1-2 days).

Please note: although I hate Nokia and Symbian, I have nothing against Palm platform. The fact of the matter however is that I am fan of Microsoft cell phones and I went to this interview with PalmSource people because they invited me and because they are nice people. Also I wanted to know their view on putting .Net into Palm platform (as addition like Java).

Anyway: it is a nice phone, that SGH-i505 but please note that I was playing with and touching also the i500 - it is also ready and also to be released beginning of next year. I personally however liked i505 more because of the rotating display. Rotating display simply rocks.

Thunderball @ 10/14/2003 4:57:04 AM #
I thought the i500 had a nicer than the i505 (except maybe for the horrible blue color).

Anyway, why would I want to buy a OS5 phone in 2004, when OS6 will be released in December?

Please, please, please tell me that you asked the people who invited you if there would be an upgrade to OS 6 made availible for customers of these phones to purchase?

(I know I will not buy one of these without one. I want proper SD card support, amongst other things... but I do want one of these phones...)

RE: not exactly
Thunderball @ 10/14/2003 4:59:40 AM #
Ack, I just noticed... "no Samsung people"... ok, the OS 5 was probably customized by Samsung, so the PalmSource people probably wouldn't know...

Still, has there been any confirmation of upgrades to OS 6 on current OS 5 devices/hardware?

RE: not exactly
Thunderball @ 10/14/2003 5:04:46 AM #
I also now noticed that the i505 didn't have a 2nd display, which means that I have to flip it open to see who is calling...

...tough decision...

...unless they won't offer any OS 6 upgrades, that is... then they won't get my money.

Sorry I am not a Palm specialist, I was too stupid to ask such intelligent question. I didn't ask.

> i505 didn't have a 2nd display, which means

well, as far as I am concerned the rotable display makes up for the lack of 2nd display. Rotable display is totally cool and, since i505 has touchscreen, you can rotate it and use it as a PDA, but also you can make photos at many strange angles... I wish some Microsoft cell phones would have rotable display... I envy you so much this i505 model!!

Smartphones using PalmOS will always be a generation behind. So we should not expect the new Samsung until later next year.

In europe smartphones are cheap - I just paid eq of $170 (£99) for my treo 600, the same price as a zire 21.

Is that with a 50 year contract? (Please say yes, even if it was with just a one year contract.) How much is the phone without contract?

i500 end of the line?

Timothy Rapson @ 10/14/2003 8:31:53 AM #
Say, what happened to the guy who was here six months ago. He claimed he was some high up big shot close to Samsung and he had direct word from SamSung that the i500 was the last Palm OS phone Samsung was ever going to do. He said the decision was already done and that was that.

Now, we hear Sammy is going all four ways with MSSmartphone, Symbian, Palm OS, and Linux phones. So much for standards!
