Comments on: Facebook for WebOS Updated

Amidst all of the recent news of WebOS developers walking away from the platform, the continuing improvements made to the Facebook WebOS app will no doubt be a pleasant surprise.

Now ringing in at version 1.5, the latest Facebook for WebOS client is now available in the Palm App Catalog. The primary improvement is Facebook Places check-in awareness, though Facebook Chat support is pending for a future update.

Yesterday, Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff said that sales of Palm's and Handspring's devices may exceed expectations this holiday season. He found that 94% of the retailers he surveyed reported demand for Palm devices in line with or better than expectations - and 54% of those surveyed said demand was actually higher than expected. "It is pretty clear, according to the retailers we spoke with, that Palm devices are near the top of a lot of wish lists this holiday season," Neff said. The survey also found demand for Handspring devices was also better than expected, but demand for other PDAs was less robust.

From November 30 through December 10, the Bear Stearns analyst and his associate Ted Chung randomly selected 10 to 12 large retails stores throughout the United States each day and asked the store management a structured set of questions regarding demand for Palm devices and other PDAs. The questions ranged from inventory shortage questions to year-over-year same store sales growth rates. Major chains surveyed included CompUSA, Target, Circuit City, Best Buy, Staples and Office Depot. The survey, which was conducted at the beginning of the holiday season before sales typically reach their peak, found a significant increase in demand for the high-tech devices. "We had one enthusiastic store manager tell us that 'Palms are flying out the door'," said Neff.

If you notice the comment below the thread, the poster "Ken", called it. "To continue it's growth though, Palm must evolve to the next generation."

I had to upgrade this week. I had fully intended to get a new WebOS device. Since there are no recent WebOS devices I went with an iPhone. My cord from Palm is officially cut. I am now an "i" guy with iMac, iPad, and iPhone.

RIM had a complete internal panic when Apple unveiled the iPhone in 2007, a former employee revealed this weekend. The BlackBerry maker is now known to have held multiple all-hands meetings on January 10 that year, a day after the iPhone was on stage, and to have made outlandish claims about its features. Apple was effectively accused of lying as it was supposedly impossible that a device could have such a large touchscreen but still get a usable lifespan away from a power outlet.
The iPhone "couldn't do what [Apple was] demonstrating without an insanely power hungry processor, it must have terrible battery life," Shacknews poster Kentor heard from his former colleagues of the time. "Imagine their surprise [at RIM] when they disassembled an iPhone for the first time and found that the phone was battery with a tiny logic board strapped to it."

Friends who were Microsoft employees at the time were also said to have had a similar reaction.

He further added that RIM, as well as Motorola, Nokia, Palm and other early pioneers, lost ground partly because of a self-defeating attitude. RIM in particular assumed from the start that smartphones would be outgrowths of its pagers and that there would never be enough battery life or wireless technology for more functions. It started growing beyond this view before the iPhone shipped, but the OS foundation until recently was based on the early assumption.

The remarks confirm a widely held belief that BlackBerry Storm development started only after the iPhone was made public rather than having been in development at all before. RIM didn't have its first touchscreen phone until the Storm shipped in late 2008, almost two years after the iPhone's unveiling, and didn't have multi-touch support or a fully accurate web browser until the Torch arrived just this past summer. Apple is now gradually overtaking RIM in market share and is being quickly joined by Android, which now makes up the majority of Verizon sales just a year after the BlackBerry was the carrier's top earner.

p.s. is the PIC posting system acting funny for anyone else? last night i tried to post but couldn't because it kept telling me i wasn't logged in - and then was - and then wasn't - in a vicious circle - and had me trying to reply to random old PIC articles - but never let me. this happened once before several days ago. problem happened using both Chrome and Firefox.

If Palm has a surprisingly good season great for them. The very nicest thing about my TX is that it doesn't spy on me like iPhone and Android. I appreciate that.

The reason I have it is because of it's functionality. I still haven't found any apps for iPhone or Android that comes close to Agendus/Datebook. If they do, they will no doubt spy the heck out of you. For example, I installed a really cool night sky program by Google for my Evo. One of the permissions it asked for was to use the camera. WTF? They need to see me and where I am? What if I were in my mom's basement in my underware drinking chocolate milk while blogging about Sony e-readers and Kindles? I think that moment should be private.
