Comments on: Sony N610C Drops $50

Sony has cut the price of the PEG-N610C by $50 to $350. This applies to both versions of the model, which are really just two different casing colors. The new price for the N610C has already gone into effect.

It didn't publicize the change but it isn't Sony's company policy to publicize price cuts or give reasons for them. While it is mostly speculation, the most likely reason for this change is that Sony is planning on phasing out the N610C in favor of an U.S. version of T600C.

T615 is coming out - sweet!

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:11:16 PM #
Same thing happened with S300, S320, and N710 when the S320, T415 and N760 came out -- a price drop of previous versions. :)

RE: T615 is coming out - sweet!
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:16:01 PM #
and the cost might be between $400 to $450 -- not bad for a slim, hi-res, colored, vibrating, and good ir pda.

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:50:46 PM #
Unless the screen on the T600/615 sucks as bad as the one on the T415. Defenders of the T415's screen are reminiscent of the defenders of the m505's. Either way, hi-res is useless of you can't see it.

As for the T615, we shall see... (no pun intended)

Please clarify. Where's the pun in that? Im an idiot.

he said there was no pun in that. And he was correct. So now why are you lookin for a pun? You confuse me, grasshopper.

RE: T615 is coming out - sweet!
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/29/2001 8:32:12 AM #
It says "hi-res is useless if you can't SEE it," referring to the controversial "dim" look of the T415. Then it says, regarding the T615, "we shall SEE..." I guess the puns could fall there.

Get it thru your heads people.

"No pun intended" means that there IS a pun, but it is a coincidence and not the original intention of the author. What's so hard to understand about that?

RE: T615 is coming out - sweet!

"No pun intended" means that THERE IS a pun but it was unintended.

we shall see = anticipation

I guess i got use to unintelligence on these boards that i didnt expect a witty comment like that. A comment like that actually requires more then two brain cells to develop. For most people who post on these boards i'd be very surprised if they even use one..

As for the guys who said there is no PUN. It it through YOUR heads!! Do you guys even know what a PUN means? Dont even try to make an argument when you have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what the f*ck your talking about. You'll just look stupid...

Only hi-res color available

skoty @ 11/28/2001 3:18:23 PM #
Man, I really though Handspring would be comming out with a new color Visor before the holidays. Sony's still the only PalmOS PDA maker that has hi-res color options when buying a PDA. You've got to give them credit, they continue to have an unending stream of new products comming out. If Handspring or Palm did come out with a hi-res color PDA, I bet it would sell like crazy.

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:22:40 PM #
They focused on the Treo and doing heavy marketing on it which has made it popular and raised their stock prices a bit. I think they've learned their lesson on the Edge & the platinum versions.

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:29:47 PM #
They had better release the color Treo SOON. The B&W version will flop.

And you base this on...

...oh, yeah...your own pea-brained assumptions. No real basis--typical for this site's discussion boards.

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:49:44 PM #
You shouldnīt think you are the center of the Universe. Most cell phones donīt have color capabilities. Hawkins gave the idea that they are going after the cell phone market, not the PDA market. Many people donīt have PDAs yet, and they do have a cell phone. And maybe they are not willing to pay the extra $200. I bet your first PDA was mono, not color...

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:53:32 PM #
Exactly!

But see, it appears that the Sony users who post to this site believe, "I carry a Sony, and therefore I am a god, and you're NOTHING." And therefore Sony must be some type of idol to be worshipped, even though their latest offering (T415) pretty much blows when compared to the hype.

I really find the so-called "logic" hard to believe:
Sony drops N610C by $50, which MUST mean they'll release a US version of the T600 (which hasn't OFFICIALLY begun selling even in Japan yet), which MUST mean that EVERYONE will go out and buy it, which MUST mean that Palm will be dead & buried by Dec. 31 (and all Palm users must inherently be retards), which MUST mean that Handspring had BETTER release a COLOR Treo in 2 weeks, or they'll be dead & buried, too. What kind of a dumb-a** thinks this way?

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:56:33 PM #
Kyocera released a palm-powered cellphone. Handspring also thought of creating a springboard cellular phone module. Another company in asia created one too for the Palm V. Nokia created the communicator. They all didn't become popular -- how is treo different?

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 4:01:10 PM #
Let's just see how many people who is using an Ericsson, Nokia, motorola or Sony phone will switch to handspring when they see Tero.

Cell phone user "O look at taht thing ... handspring Tero ?? phone ?? what is that .... probably some Motorollat Ericsson wannabe, I'll just get the nokia phone with EPOC then ...."

Handhelp user "O look at that Tero ..... I'll wait for one with color screen and expension, O look, there's the cool nokia phone with EPOC OS, awesome"

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 4:02:08 PM #
How is Treo different? Because of the things Hawkins emphasizes: Size, Reliability, and Ease of use.

The Kyocera is huge. The Visor Phone required the user to combine 2 pieces of hardware, which was bulky. The Palm V add-ons eliminated the small form factor of the V itself. The Nokia Communicator was apparently difficult to use and unreliable, and it required a whole new OS.

The Treo will combine the ever-popular, easy-to-use Palm OS with a cell phone that's as small as the state-of-the-art devices currently available. It addresses the shortcomings of its predecessors.

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 4:06:23 PM #
I think gadgeteers enjoy using two things (cellular and pda) at the same time. Also, imagine if a new awesome model of a cellular phone is released from a certain company and you have a treo? Unless treo is that good and can adapt to technology, the bottom line will be selling the treo, get the new model of the cellular and then get a new pda.

For me, i'd still stick to a good pda, and link my cellular thru IR or cable. If a new PDA comes, I can sell my PDA and get the new one. Same with my cellular.

"The Treo will combine the ever-popular, easy-to-use Palm OS with a cell phone that's as small as the state-of-the-art devices currently available. It addresses the shortcomings of its predecessors."

If I am a cellphone user
1) I won't care if it syncs with my PC or not, so the OS doesnt matter much to me
2) Epoc looks cooler, and all new nokia phones with EPOC is color, as a consumer, I'll think cool I'll go on a 3G network with that :)
3) The Tero looks really ugly and bulky comparing to any Nokia or Ericsson phone

"For me, i'd still stick to a good pda, and link my cellular thru IR or cable. If a new PDA comes, I can sell my PDA and get the new one. Same with my cellular."

I agree. That's why I believe the two shouldn't mix. With the two together, it will now be very limiting on two categories already PDA and cellular. Please, one is enough!

By the way, you can connect thru bluetooth too, while your cellular is in your pocket. :)

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 5:23:35 PM #
Those who say cell phone users don't need color are probably right, but the whole point of the Treo is that it's more than just a cell phone. And it does seem like more and more PDA owners are going for color units. So sure, there's no hard evidence, but I'd bet a lot of folks will wait a couple months before getting a Treo, for a couple reasons (1) to see how the color units turn out (2) to wait for other guinea pigs to try out the B&W units first. :)

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 5:30:33 PM #
I think one of the real issues of the Treo is the lack of GSM coverage. The Treo is not a tri-mode phone. People on the west and east coasts have little to worry about, but the midwest coverage is really poor. It would be VERY easy to leave your calling region. Not a great choice for the business traveler who travels by car, especially when there are PDA phones out there that have true nationwide coverage.

I love Handspring and wish them the best, but this phone ain't it.

RE: Only hi-res color available
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 6:00:29 PM #
Those who believe cellphones or pdas don't "need" color are the same ones that believed 640k was all you'd ever need. New applications will come out that demand color. You need to realize that color isn't only for games and pictures, color makes it much easier to visualize data quickly.

1) I think I read somewhere that Handspring is working on a CDMA version but I'm not absolutely certain.

Actually, the site is called Palm INFO Center. Yes, INFO - you know, news, information, etc. The comments are welcome, but I assume said comments/opinions should INDEED have a basis in fact. For instance, "the Sony Clie has a better screen because it's got higher resolution and a brighter, adjustable backlight." THAT'S an opinion based on facts. In contrast, "The B/W Treo will flop" is merely just some punk Sony user bashing other brands--not really based in fact, and not really productive.

Hey the "Edumacation troll" is back... You know it was clever the first time... of course I believe the first time was on the Simpsons some years ago.. However it gets very boring very quickly.

Why not go away and try and learn a new trick? We might get a few months peace then...

Regarding the price drop on the N610.. I agree. Look out for a new product fitting that niche from Sony in 2 or 3 months.

RE: Only hi-res color available

I would like to say that I am the one who said that the B&W treo will flop. I base this on the following things:

Was the Kyocera successful? Hell No. It even has more functions than the Treo without the keyboard of course.

The Treo is limited to its functionality and expensive. It is more of a gadget than a true business tool. Bottom line is that I would rather buy a color gadget than monochrome.

Economy.

bad idea

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:48:08 PM #
honestly if that is the case that they are getting ready to replace the 610 with the t60x then that really speaks of how unloyal a company such as sony is. i know that they like to dilute the market with theeir devices, but with pdas the turnarounds shouldnt be less than a year per model.

RE: bad idea
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:51:22 PM #
"replace the 610 with the t60x" ??

they are different lines of product, T series are Clie palm device with a slim form factor

N series are Clie Palm Device with bigger form factor, a bit cheaper than T series at the same spec.

Have you ever think why sony is the biggest consumer electronics maker on this earth? Why people are so "loyal" to Sony that they'll go back and buy another sony TV when their old on broke down? There must be a reason there, if they are so "unloyal" to their customers then all their customers must be really be $uckers, or maybe you are the only on who's not a $ucker.

RE: bad idea
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 3:52:23 PM #
I think it is a good idea. They bring down the prices so they can get rid of their stock fast. They are into JIT (just in time) methodology.

RE: bad idea
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 4:13:10 PM #
Did it occur to anyone that this move may be to keep the 610 priced $50 below the cost of the M505? The 610 was $50 less until Palm dropped the cost of the M505 by $50. Sony is just following Palm's cut with their own $50 cut to keep the 610 less than the M505 Palm.

RE: bad idea
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/28/2001 4:28:22 PM #
Well that makes more sense , thought everyone was misleaded by this....

"Last week, Sony announced in Japan the T600C, which is similar to the N610C but has a smaller casing and 16 MB of RAM. It has not yet announced whether there will be U.S. version, though one is widely expected. "

HERESEY!!
slot_machine @ 11/28/2001 4:52:28 PM #
>>but with pdas the turnarounds shouldnt be less than a year per model.

I've read through a lot of insanity on this board, but I never thought I would hear any kind of heresey like THIS! What do you want to do man, put a quota on innovation?? Do you want to keep things comfortable so your favorite company can keep up? Are you mad? The faster this industry turns around PDA models, the sooner we get the Holy Handheld Grail. Shame on you! If it irks you to have your latest purchase made obsolete in 6 mos, kindly step away from the bleeding edge. You're blocking our view!

I'm not the original poster this response was to, but anyhow. I have bought Sony TVs and monitors because they tend to have better/brighter/flatter/crisper screens than anything else available. Lately with flat panel monitors and HDTV that has been less true. Unfortunately TVs have little to do with PDAs.

Many people buying PDAs expect OS upgrades to be available for it. Many people buying PDAs with an expansion slot expect devices for that slot to work with it. The past few months have already shown that Sony has quickly dropped that type of support for anything but their latest device. It is going to be hilarious listening to the Sony fanatics who dropped $350-$500 on the 610/710/760 in the last few months moaning when Sony no longer supports updates, expansions, whatever for their device 4 months from now.

do you see any S-series owners complianing about no Cam module or no GPS modules for them ? probably no/ very little, coz when they buy it, they understand that they bought the low cost, low res device, and those new modules probably requires a higher res screen to display

I've never hear anything about Sony not support any of their devices, seriously I could take my 4 years old MD player back to Sony, and they'll still fix it and fully support it.

I think Visor users should be more worried about Handspring not supporting springboard modules 6 months from now, and release new thin device that don't even have springbaord slot at all, than sony users worry about they can't use new mem stick modules released 6 months from now.

RE: bad idea
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/29/2001 2:22:43 AM #
I agree with the previous post.

How many among the buyers you think know that their Sony CLIE can actually be upgraded or can use other add-on devices? I believe there are some who knows, a few who doesn't care and the rest who has no idea at all. The majority of the buyers understand that this is the unit they bought and knew from the start that is has its limitations.

Bottom line is... Whatever unit you buy today (be it with good customer support or not) might be the state-of-the-art for the moment and will eventually get obsolete over time.

The typewriter before was state-of-the-art. Now, it isn't because of computers.

What's your point? The 610/710/760 are not low-cost, low-res devices.

Also, no, people who buy devices with an expansion slot and flash RAM for the OS expect those things to be useful for expansion cards and OS upgrades. They certainly don't "understand".

Palm or Pocket PC, the never ending debate. I suppose you have to consider your use. I always look at it thru the functionality and expansion side for reuse. If you own a digital cam, choose the one which uses the same memory module.

As for the price, hmm. Look for better deals. Sony couples the 760 now with a 32MB Memorystick and a leather case.

Good luck.

two choices: update the 710 to 760 from sony ($50) or upgrade it illegally by software (free but warranty gets void). personally, i think both things produce the same result -- a 760.

Just in case any of the Canadian readers arenčt aware there are three models now available in Canada (sony and staples). However, the model number is not going to be T-600C, but somewhat similar. As far as the price is concerned, it's going to be $400-450US. Ill keep the info as soon as i get more info....WAY TO GO, SONY!

I can understand not releasing the identity of your "highly classified source." However, when you refuse to identify even YOURSELF, I have to wonder about the truth of your post. I imagine Sony will try to release a T600-type device in the US, but I wonder if that timetable is accurate.

That sounds just about right for Sony so far. Look at the track record of intros.

have you guys noticed one thing? Comparing to recent PPC 2002 hype, Sony in general is keeping its promise of shipping/available date. Plus, not many people know about the new product before its offical release. Take T600C as an example, how many of us know for sure that it is coming? Is this marketing strategy a good thing or not???

I can confirm this release - I just preordered one at datavision. I had purchased a peg-n610c a few weeks back, and it was stolen (along with the rest of my bag). When I went to both the sony style store in manhattan and to datavision, I was told that they had already discontinued this model, and were coming out with the peg-t615c to replace it. at datavision, they let me prepurchase it. It will be in next week. and it's blue.

Are all Sony cradles and accessories cross-compatible?

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/29/2001 8:23:28 PM #
I'm thinking about getting an S320 or N610C, but I have no idea which cradles and accessories would interoperate with other Sony Clie models. For example, would the cradles and accessories (e.g., keyboards) for these work with the T series? Thanks!

(Looking at pictures, it looks like the S and N models interoperate, but the T models have a different form factor?)

The T series can not use peripherals that connect to the HotSync port and were designed for any other model.

From what I've seen, the optional S-series cradle will work with the N-series devices but the S-series devices won't work with the N-series cradles because of the curvature of the cradle where the port connects. The hot sync cable and keyboard for the S-series works with the N-series and vice versa. My question is whether the upcoming color T-series cradle will work with the 415? While I'm no engineer, it doesn't seem that it would be too difficult for someone to design a interchangable connector/plug that would enable the cradles/sync cables to work with all models by a particular PalmOS PDA mfg.
