Comments on: First NR Series Cases Released

A Japanese company named Xigma has begun selling what are possibly the first cases for Sony's NR series. Both are flip cases, one with the hinge at the top, the other with the hinge on the right side. They don't interfere with the NR's ability to switch between clamshell and tablet forms. These cases are made of leather and cost $60.

It is really The first class cow hide (the cow leather) we have used. Easy oreration for the Jogdial, for the sense of skin also.

It is recommendable for maintenance with the cleaning oil of attachment."

the cases really are quite nice though, all of them, but the translations are wild...at least they tries though, that's all i ask for...

"In order to utilize the slim body of the m505/500,
In order to be able to show the protection effect of the maximum with thickness of the leather of the minimum limit, it is designed.
Removing from the chest pocket, opening the cover swiftly,
When using it ends, closing the cover swiftly, and you reset to the chest pocket. Being such a light, it is the functional case.

The Palm is known and depends on the Japanese designer who is exhausted, it is the case which you used and seriously considered the selfishness. "

classic...

Why don't you go over to their Japanese section, which has the same information, and translate it into English? You can email them the better translations. What's that, you say you don't SPEAK Japanese? So all you are doing is sitting around criticizing somebody for doing something you can't do at all? Man, don't you realize how pathetic that makes you look?

Whoa, easy tiger. It's just a funny translation. I think all would agree that there's no malice intended, just a little friendly ribbing.

Admit it. We all loved AYB. See?

Sorry,I guess I over-reacted. I'm frustrated by the many Japanese companies that sell CLIE accessories only in Japan and I don't want to do anything to put down one of the few who sells stuff I can buy.

This is a little too painful to see... should mean something like this:

"The case was designed specially handiness in mind, by a Japanese designer who knows all about Palm devices."

(my half crappy hand translation. so don't ask :-) )

Does it need a case?

mtg101 @ 4/15/2002 9:58:59 AM #
With the clam-shell design I wouldn't have thought a case was necessary - unless you're worried about scratching the outer case.

When I first saw the NR series I tought that this lack of need for a case would be a big benefit - as cases add a lot of size to the device. My N770C is pretty small - but in its case it doubles the thickness of the device as well as adding some width and height, which makes the device in its case very cumbersome.

A case would be absolutlely necessary if you want to use it as a PDA. Otherwise you would have to flip-twist-fold it every time you want to use it and the reverse to close it just to keep the screen protected. I think once people realize what a pain in the rear the NR-series is in real life, nobody will buy it. Given the price, you may as well get a mini-laptop.

You only have to twist-flip it if you want to, to hold in one hand and just use the sylus or jog controls. Opening up to this mode would indicate (to me at least) that you intended to use the device for some time - to read a book or play a game.

For most of the quick operations, like checking off a to-do item or checking your schedule, you'd just open it up and use it with the keyboard, and then close it again.

Or at least that's the way I'd envisaged it being used.

I guess maybe it is just me, but that seems like an awfully awkward way of doing things.

The main reason I have a case is for drop protection.

Unless the new Sony is unusually rugged, it could still be damaged if it fell on a hard surface.

"The main reason I have a case is for drop protection"

I guess that would make the most sense. If I had this device, I'd just open the top to use it unless I was reading a book or gaming. Of course, the buttons are on the lower half, which kind of forces you to have it in the mini-laptop position... can you use the virtual buttons for games? Anyways, I think I would hesitate to let the kids play with this one. Between the six of them, they have broken or smashed 3 screens of their own Palms. They now have bumper cases, but my daughter's Palm was flung 12 feet onto concrete by her brother. It would have been a good test, IF it had been in the case! It was a spectacular crash, with the screen shattered into little shards, the LCD smashed, but the Palm itself still working after they found the batteries. I don't think I would have been as calm if it cost $600. At least the digitizer kept the glass contained...

How does it attach...

dmunz @ 4/15/2002 10:55:29 AM #
It looks like they rigged up some kind of bracket to attach the NR to the case. It would be really cool if they made this kind of a deal for the T615C.

From what I know, Xigma is a Taiwanese company with a Japanese subsidary.

Palm slim leather case like....

I.M. Anonymous @ 4/18/2002 2:49:05 AM #
I currently have a Palm M505 with a Slim leather case.

The main reason I'm not thinking of buying a sony is they don't have a case like this.
