Patches ALREADY! !!!!

navomaal @ 10/6/2003 1:21:08 PM #
this is so like palm....they had so much time to fix this issue or include it with the handheld/cd...

(Sorry for the duplicate post, but it fits here too)

Palm amd SD...
They just can't seem to pull that together can they?

I think there is an SD patch for every Palm PDA so-equipped, saving maybe one or two, and they have size limits.

Still, at least it isn't SUDS, am I right? huuh?

I know you're out there, I can hear you typing...

There's a considerable lag time between when the software is "finished" and when the Palm units themselves hit the shelves. I guess they found a few issues in that time.

Dancing like Bill Gates now

BUDD @ 10/6/2003 1:21:19 PM #
What the hell is that about? So palm dances like Microsoft now? Releasing a SECURITY patch for a just-released handheld. Methinks maybe it wasn't quite ready for release then. That one is straight from the MS playbook.

Admin @ 10/6/2003 1:35:59 PM #
the update adds security features and encryption, it does not "fix" a specific security hole or virus exploit.

BUDD @ 10/7/2003 8:52:05 AM #
No offense but what's the difference. There was a need to add a security feature all of a sudden? There was late-breaking technological advances in encryption that they couldn't resist releasing?

All I'm saying is a 'security patch' versus a 'fix for a problem exploited by a virus' code kiddy seems to be little more than a difference in semantics.

P.S. There seems to be some worry about over-flaming palm. For the record, I have never owned nor used anthing but a Palm OS handheld and very likely never will. Love Palm OS (at least the OS4 and before stuff). Base my business on Palm OS. But I worry about the future here. We get to OS 6&7 which look like Windows from the screen shots I have seen. Multi-tasking, late releases of things like security-related issues and RIGHT after release. Man if that doesn't smell of MicroSoft. Palm's customer base, I feel, has been raised on reliability and trustability. The rest of us used Microsoft stuff because we had to.

How about actually reading what the new features are.

What about the whole fried SD issue with T3?

snugglefart @ 10/6/2003 1:28:38 PM #
I hear that those T3s is frying SD cards like they were chicken nuggets at McDs

bquin @ 10/6/2003 1:45:39 PM #
The original T/T fried 3 sandisk sd cards before I wised up and use other brands, but what I am hearing is that the T3 fries other brands as well. Can anyone confirm this?

...laughing at a world too absurd to take seriously...

I have a t3 & have been working with docs to go word docs & mp3s since friday without any problems. the saving of the word doc in native format to card is very very very slow & maybe that is a sign of frying the card but so far all is well.

I have removed the card until further notice since I don't want to lose what I have on there or go back to comp & ask to replace it.

just waiting to hear from palm or sandisk without saving to card & mp3s.

I have a lexar 128 mb card

please continue this discussion here:

I've published an article on the possible T3 SD issue.

I'm so embarrassed...

palmcoder @ 10/6/2003 1:36:06 PM #
... to be associated with this user group at times.

When the T3 was leaked months ago, people b!tched and moaned that it wasn't out yet. When the T2 was released, the same people threw their arms up in disgust that PalmOne would have the audacity to release a "paultry T2 upgrade" when everyone knew the T3 was waiting in the wings.

Now the T3 is out and some software issues have been discovered. PalmOne responds by releasing a software patch to address the problems.

How does the user community respond? In a logical world, one would expect users to respond favorably for such quick customer support and service.

But as it is with most cases here at PIC, logic is tossed out in favor of hate, vitriol, and name calling. Now, PalmOne should be "ashamed for releasing this device too soon when they knew it had problems."

The *real* shame is that the contributions of the intelligent, thoughtful people whose opinions drew me to PIC in the first place have all been drowned out in the cacophony caused by all the mud slingers.

As for this user, I'm thrilled with my T3 and I'd like to thank PalmOne for their excellent customer support.

Nicely put palmcoder. How fickle people are...

(Why do some people say you can kill two birds with one stone when it's hard enough killing one bird with two stones?)

Wow, there IS intelligent life out there.

I heartily agree with your comments.

RE: I'm so embarrassed...
BUDD @ 10/7/2003 9:03:38 AM #
Nope--Palm has a good (not perfect, but good) history of releasing devising that were useful and reliable out of the box. The T3 shouldn't have been released until there the 'patch' or 'enhancement' was behind FLASH and the device in the shrinkwrap. Anything else really could be just greed or the need to get something out fast (like maybe survival in the market--I know, I know).

Increased Complexity
palmcoder @ 10/7/2003 9:27:48 AM #
BUDD -- I agree. For the most part, Palm/PalmOne has a very good track record for releasing stable product from the gate. Back then, the devices were much simpler(from a hardware perspective) and Palm had almost no competition. As a result, they were in full control over their schedules and could afford to hold onto a new device and "beat every bug to death" in the test labs.

Today, the PDA market is much more aggressive. PalmOne is surrounded by competitors using both Palm OS and PocketPC. Additionally, the internal complexity of these handheld devices is quickly approaching that of desktop PCs (high res screens, removeable storage, BlueTooth, 802.11b, cellular chipsets, etc.) Combine these factors, and it's almost impossible to predict a solid release date on which you can release a 100% bug free device.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to come up with excuses for PalmOne. I just think the market is much more complicated than it was 6 years ago when all Palm had was the Palm III and Palm V families.

Has anybody tried this update on other Palms?

statik @ 10/6/2003 2:01:39 PM #
Has anybody tried this update on any other OS5 Palm handhelds? The palm web site says that you need a T3, but I'd really love the additional security on my Zire 71.

Crazy 'bout a">Mercury...

I wouldn't...

Garmin iQue Patches are out also

edyaw @ 10/6/2003 2:13:42 PM #
Though not mentioned above, the Garmin iQue 3600 has three patches available.
1 for Map Install
1 for Track Conduit, and
1 for the OS

Patch for security???

PalmInsider @ 10/7/2003 2:57:35 AM #
It looks like a great security software not a patch that Palm gave us for 0$. I always wanted something like this so to me it's great.

If you try this security patch you'll see what I'm talking about.

And to those who complain... If you don't have anything constructive to contribute go to another forum. All I read mostly here lately are complaints....

Patch is almost worthless with no DESKTOP Encryption

Gekko @ 10/7/2003 8:53:08 AM #
We need DESKTOP Encryption.

On your PC? Ask Microsoft, or whoever your OS vendor is for that one.

For God's sake! You know what the REAL Problem with Palm is? They don't GIVE me Palms! Those greedy bastards make me PAY for them... Can you believe that crap! After all the loyalty I've showed them over the years! They should consider themselves lucky I use their devices. Now they have the audacity to make me PAY for one? FOR SHAME!

And furthermore, could you believe that they might actually release a device before they were done with one piece of software so that they could improve their chances at greater marketshare by trumping the release of other devices? CAPITALIST PIGS! These SOBs actually want to make money... Money! Can you believe that their company is trying to make money?!

Evil Empire!

And then, to show their brute ignorance of my delicate feelings, they give me the security software afterwords for FREE! Ignore the fact that I'm online everyday and that all registered users receive an email with simple download link to receive the software. I am now UTTERLY inconvenienced to download the free software. UGH! Now I'll have to figure out how to download stuff....

Where's my Windoze manual..

I have never met a happy perfectionist,
and there's a lot of people who visit this site regularly who will
never never never
be happy with anything.

"This Ferrari is the wrong f$%#king color! DAMMIT!"
