This was marketing hype from the very beginning. The SGH was announced way b4 the SPH was even available. When first announced, the specs on the PDA side blew away every dedicated OS5 PDA on the market. IMO, it was just to hold the Treo buyer's interest until they could get out their much later model. 320x320 on Treo and I would already b there.

Thank you Ma'am

Vaporware rears its ugly head? At least Samsung has the ability to put this device out if it really wants to. Since the Treo 600 is out now and is an amazing design, I hope people buy it instead of waiting for the SGH-i500, SDH-i500 and SAH-i500 which are all supposedly coming real soon, now.

I won't respect Samsung in the morning.

"Samsung Shows New SGH-i505 Smartphone"

Samsung's (The New Sony™) vaporware marketing department really knows how to manipulate the media. Palm releases the Treo 600 and a few days later we have another Samsung charade. Six months from now (after not releasing either the SGH-i500 or SGH-i505), are they going to announce the SGH-i510 with plasma screen technology and videophone?

No graffiti

The lack of a dedicated graffiti area was a mistake. The screen is already pretty small, and with a pop up graffiti area, the screen will be very hard to see. I do like the other specs though...

Is it possible to use the cell phone keyboard to input data?

I don't think it'll have a pop up area. You'll just be able to write anywhere on the screen.

um..what makes you think it'd have a popup graffiti area? o_O

you would be able to write directly on the screen..

The SPH-i500 is the current model available from Sprint (OS 4).
The SGH-i500 is the upcoming, ut delayed model.

From a comment on Brighthand about the SPH-i500
http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=90425&highlight=sghi500

"Samsung made one ingenious addition to the SPH-i500. Since they have a number pad, they enabled the ability to quickly enter numbers, text, and symbols in any Palm application using the standard 2-ABC 3-DEF style input."

I know the danger of assuming anything in the tech world, but if the "younger brother" of the SGH-i500 has the ability surely the new model will retain it...

i don't get your point. Even if your assumption that it will feature a popup graffiti area were true, If it DID have the dedicated graffiti area, wouldn't that further minimize the size of the available screen (given the same display size of course)? Wouldn't it make more sense to have it appear only when you actually need it? If you don't like the idea of a graffiti area popping up and blocking up the screen occasionally, how would a graffiti area blocking up the screen ALL THE TIME make things any better?

The Samsung palm flip phones are more phone than PDA. Data entry is via the number pad ie abc2 or stylus.

Old news!

Thunderball @ 10/10/2003 4:50:36 AM #
I already knew this for a couple of months, since I've been mailing Samsung about once every two weeks trying to squeeze them for information.

The real story here, is WHY is it pushed back?

The dream scenario would be that they are adding PalmOS 6 support. I know I'd gladly pay for an upgrade to OS 6, even after the phone is released.´

(The only thing I've gotten from Samsung on this matter was that the would forward my mail to the R&D department.)

The other scenario would be that they are waiting to use Palm's OS 5 Phone Edition (or whatever it's going to be called), but that's apparently going to be released after OS 6... (why would anyone want it then?)

However, if the phone does get relased in Q1 2004, with original specs only, I am not 100% certain that I will get it anymore. I mean, OS 6 will be out in the open, and I absolutely loathe the way OS 5 handles SD memory cards.

(Also, the thought about OS 6 using BeOS technology gets me drooling.)

Europe

new505user @ 10/11/2003 6:26:28 PM #
Is it on sale anywhere? Based on pictures I've seen, it was at Palmsource's European Developer conference in September. If it's on sale in Europe, can't one buy it and put in a U.S. SIM card?

dhchung @ 10/12/2003 4:42:46 AM #
on sale? I really doubt that. If they are selling in europe, I see no reason why they don't want to make profit in the US.
Did you just see a prototype?
