WebOS is better than the current crap of smartphone rubbish UI ( BB, Android, WM 6.x) but still far below the gold standard of iPhone and of course classic Palm OS. Too much wasted screen real estate in some WebOS elements and its not nearly as finger-friendly as 320x480 should/could be. Of course, Android looks like it was slapped together by a group of mentally challenged kids with ADD, so anything is an improvement. Google is ONLY about flash & eye cands over substance, so I don't expect much to change in that regard. Google continues adding nifty transitions & UI effects to the OS while doing NOTHING to improve the core PIM functionality of Android.
Duarte was probably "gone" ages ago (like Colligan was last year and Marc Blank before that) but is just making the Google relationship official now.

I have had many opportunities to purchase a WebOS device and I chose not to do so. We're all entitled to our own opinion and I think WebOS' UI elements are far better suited to larger screens that are higher resolution than the 320x480 (or less), 3.1" (or less) displays on Palm's current lineup.
Let me throw out the tantalizing tidbit that IMHO Garnet remains a superior OS to both WebOS AND iPhone OS as far as speed/ease of inputting & recalling info one-handed as well as the critical aspect of PIM functionality.
Any OS that lacks a full-featured document editing (not just viewing) package such as DTG cannot be taken truly seriously for power users. Dataviz's lack of faith in WebOS to date speaks volumes.

Positive Palm news: Ben Combee returned to Palm!
I just hope he stays on (and takes on more responsibility) when HP officially assumes ownership of Palm. Those of us who have followed Palm for a while will remember that Big Ben was one of the main cogs in the Foleo's development. If only the rest of he development team had been as talented as Ben, today we all might have been toting around Foleo IIIs instead of iPads.
The Foleo Story is a sad tale that deserves to be told in public. Someday...

All this user interface angst is B.S.
Palm has lost its way and is now run by marketing types rather than software people. THAT is the explanation for Palm's decade-long decline into oblivion. Amazing that Hawkins' original ideas (Palm Pilot and Treo) have kept the company in business for so long despite the near-criminal mismanagement that Palm has had to endure.
Brand new 128 MB Centro 2 are now available for $90 - $110 on eBay. I just picked up another one for $90. This is probably the last Palm branded device I'll ever buy, but it makes a hell of a PDA - even without activation. Turn off the cell phone radio and battery life is better than most recent Palm PDAs.
While i like the Sprint HTC EVO hardware, I think itssize may be a bit too big for me and I also don't like the disarray that the Android platform is in. I'm embarassed to realize that my next phone could be an iPhone 4G...
Google commit suicide
RE: Google commit suicide
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if there was not much interest keeping him after the HP buyout. There are a lot of UI people at HP on a salary and consulting basis that perhaps didn't see eye to eye with him.
The real perceived gem of the HP buyout is the webOS kernel that can go into hundreds if not thousands of HP product that now have royalty payments connected to them. The User Interface, IMO is considered secondary.
has anyone tried Pocket Mirror for WebOS?
'if you see a wire - they blew it.'
i'm so over wire usb syncing. OTA sync is a beautiful thing. automagically sync everything to the cloud. no more fumbling with cables, cradles, and clumsy usb doors.

Awaiting the day when The Cloud goes POOF! and automagically sends all of Gekko's Cloud-only-synced data to Electron Hell.
Probably sooner than that, The Cloud will develop the vapors and Gekko will go temporarily (more) insane when he can't get to what he's socked away in The Cloud.

Many told me that Mobile Division was constantly loosing talent to the desktop groups to get Windows 7 finished and out. This reorganization and house cleaning is like getting rid of a Fire Lieutenant cause the house he was rescuing burned down cause the Fire Chief was taking all of his water away.

Everyone already has a virtual wallet!... Confinity Inc. is best known as the creator of PayPal. It was founded in December 1998 by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, and Luke Nosek, initially as a Palm Pilot payments and cryptography company. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confinity

I knew you were one of those crazed hoarders. Will we see your cardboard box home on TV some day in one of those Oprah specials? LMAO!!!
When do you get the Evo? I don't want to miss you braying about it -- especially with AT&T capping data on the new iPhone today! Looks like a Sprint MiFi might be in my future thanks to AT&T. But probably not until October, when 4G lights up NYC and the MiFi is unlimited data (3G is 5GB cap -- bah!).
RE: Get them while their hot
1. i'm a minimalist. less is more. i hate clutter and waste and junk. if i don't use it i give it away or throw it out.
http://zenhabits.net/a-guide-to-creating-a-minimalist-home/
2. i get the EVO first thing in the morning this Fri June 4. i'll try to do a quick post here updating my first impressions. all of my Contacts and Calendar events are already on The Google courtesy of nuevasync.com and i'm already using Gmail as my primary email and all of my files are sitting out there on the Cloud synced via FTP so i am good to go and ready to automagically migrate to the EVO at the press of a button.
RE: Get them while their hot
It's designed to pull in the soccer mom/MILFs with "value" pricing that's superficially more attractive but will ultimately clobber you for any major data overages. AT&T reminds me of Palm circa 2007-2009 in how they are desperately trying to shun all of their data-intensive power users.
I just checked my Verizon usage and I've already used ~1.8Gb this billing cycle on my Droid and that's with VERY little YouTube streaming, no Skype, no tethering/DUN, not that much Pandora streaming and no online gaming or anything. I could easily forsee myself doubling that while traveling (those downloaded maps consume more data than you think), with a better device (ala Evo), or with a bigger battery. Basically i've blown the 2GB data cap from just regular web/email/navigation and a bit of music streaming. Android (and presumably any other cloud-centric OS such as WebOS) uses a LOT of bandwidth for its little widgets and background updates etc. Android-based devices are never gonna fly for pay-as-you-go data usage models. They'd be ideal for something like the relaunched Virgin plans where you get very few voice minutes but unlimited, uncapped data.
I'd have thought AT&T would at least have waited until next year or a larger HSPA+ rollout or a new calendar year or something. AT&T arrogantly thinks that people are going to be so nuts over the new iPhone that they will pay ANYTHING for the privelage of it. And the iPad 3G just became a LOT less attractive than it already is with this shitty new "deal". At the very least I'd like to see a Verizon version of the iPad for users who will consume a large amount of data.
Geeko is right--Sprint's honestly looking like a better and better deal with each passing day, even with the extra few charges on the Evo (for WiMax, tethering & premium video chat if you want it). Regardless, I am going to see what happens with the Moto Shadow & Droid 2 before I make my next move. But one this completely clear: I'll NEVER go to AT&T now for ANY device!

RE: Get them while their hot
What I REALLY want to see is HTC (or anyone else) to somehow pack a physical keyboard, Android, and a 4" screen into a decently performing Android device. I am not as hung up on thinness as others. When you carried 2 devices for so long like i did (and put up with Tungsten C, LifeDrive and Treo 700p bricks), you learn to not be particularly picky.

RE: Get them while their hot
5 years ago i implored you to stop fumbling with two devices and let go of the PDA and switch to a smartphone.
1 year ago i implored you to let go of USB cable desktop sync and join the Cloud.
today i implore you to let go of the physical keyboard and switch to a good large capacitive on screen keyboard like HTC's.
i know you hillbillies in the South are a little behind but come on!
RE: Get them while their hot
With two one will never get lost ... that saves money. Though it does cost more to have two than having one initially. In the long term it will save money as one can never get lost.

Well, it's good for Android, I suppose. Although it will wreak havoc when HTC phone users find out they get Sense instead of the Cool Duarte stuff, for example. Good luck to him all the same.
