Comments on: Palm Pre Plus in the Works for Verizon?

verizon pre As 2009 draws to a close, more and more confirmations are appearing to suggest that several WebOS are headed to Verizon Wireless in early 2010. The latest rumor comes from a PhoneArena article claiming that some VZW tipsters are reporting the presence of a "Palm Pre Plus" in big red's internal inventory system. Unfortunately, there is no clear indication of specs, pricing, or release date thus far.

For quite some time the rumor mill has been reporting several different possibilities for an improved version of the Pre on Verizon. These claims have ranged from the likely (16GB of internal storage and/or a microSD slot) to the far-fetched (a larger-size LCD). Based on Palm's past history with upgraded devices such as the 700w/700wx, the most plausible scenario would see Verizon initially carrying refreshed versions of the Pre and Pixi, with webOS 1.3.5 possibly standard. Then those updated versions will presumably arrive on Sprint in the Q2/Q3 timeframe to replace the original '09 editions.

Gekko @ 12/18/2009 11:03:36 AM # Q

or are you sticking with the Droid?

and any "Plus" will be at most 2X the RAM. don't hope for anything like bigger display or anything earth shattering.

More than storage

analogue wings @ 12/20/2009 2:59:52 PM # Q
IPhone 32gb isn't called iPhone "Plus", so my guess would be more than extra storage but less than anything that alters the case. So that would be storage, RAM, CPU up for grabs. Probably not SD slot though.

Or it could be extra storage "plus" a free Touchstone :/

That's correct. Remember, Palm won't do anything without Apple trying it first:

Then why, damnit, won't they go ahead and release a non-phone "Touch" device?

They mimic Apple in nearly every way possible other than the removable battery, physical keyboard, and not having a "Touch" handheld to exand the installled WebOS user & developer bases.

A "free" Touchstone charging back bundle is a clever concept but likely won't happen. Verizn can point to the hot demand for the Droid multimedia dock and decree they want to sell just as many Touchstones.

My vote is that it'll basically be the same Pre as is on Sprint, save for a few cosmetic and/or minor hardware changes (higher capacity stock battery, maybe some soft-touch exterior paint, or a slightly juiced-up CPU (like the Sprint Treo Pro vs. the GSM version). Nice touches, but nothing that's going to revolutionize the industry.

i still say you'll get the Sprint Pre with MAYBE 2x the RAM.

so hkk - are you going to get the PRE when it comes to VZW?

has the Droid grown on you yet? like a bad rash???

Gekko;

Sorry for not answering your question the other day. I've been very busy.

I will at least give the VZW Pre a thorough fondling. I have one remaining colleague who is still patiently waiting to snag one so I can certainly use his. But based on the Sprint Pre I still have (for sale if anyone wants one cheap) and the ones I've played with before, at the very least I'll demand performance and build quality improvements.

The Droid continues to be impressive in all the same areas it was initially impressive in---screen size/resolution, speed (usually), video capture quality, music playback quality, fantastic Google Maps/navigation integration.

Its still camera still sucks. There's still no voice dialing over BT, the phone app/stack/hardware still needs a lot of improvement, the battery life is still dismal, and its PIM capabilities remain atrocious. That said, it's still probably VZW's best smartphone at this very moment. Overall, I still have yet to see a single smartphone (from any carrier or manufacturer) that blows me away in all the critical areas.

AT&T?

sremick @ 12/21/2009 9:15:13 AM # Q
Not interested until we see an AT&T/GSM version.

Although the Pre falls very short in replacing my T3. Right now I'm eyeing the Droid which might come to AT&T (or some other uber-device running Android and supporting GSM).
