Comments on: PocketMirror Now Available for WebOS

Chapura PocketMirror PreChapura's PocketMirror Outlook synchronization software is now available for WebOS and the Palm Pre via the Palm App Catalog. PocketMirror Standard is the first software product to offer Palm Pre users the ability to synchronize data with local non-EAS desktop versions of Microsoft Outlook.

PocketMirror Standard for webOS provides complete two-way synchronization which transfers essential information between desktop versions of Outlook Contacts and Calendar and the corresponding Pre applications without cables. PocketMirror Standard synchronizes over the local Wi-Fi network using a secure transfer process that never stores or passes users' PIM data over the web; it is a direct synchronization between Windows PC and Pre.

Tasks and Memo Synching

SFO_TXUSR @ 6/11/2009 11:53:20 AM # Q
I am a heavy user of Outlook tasks and memos and would really like to know if there are plans to synch those aspects of Outlook and not just contacts and calendar information.

Task sync coming?

solarview @ 6/11/2009 12:27:07 PM # Q
Task sync with Outlook is critical to my workflow and I cannot switch from Centro to PRE until a solution is provided. I emailed Chapura about this last week and their response was:

"Currently PocketMirror for the WebOS can only synchronize Calendar and Contacts. We do hope to add Outlook Tasks sync at some point in the future."

Hope that is true and soon, including proper handling of recurring tasks for which I don't currently see an option for in the PRE menus. Placing tasks onto the calendar is not the prefered solution either as some other sync solutions apparently do.

Palm will have to wake up to proper sompatibility with Outlook. The old Palm did. Remember the OS 5 rewrites of the PIMs to make them Outlook-compatible?

Why not go with the 'cloud' model on this?

Instead of being restricted to WiFi at your house, why not provide the same mega-convenient any-time synchronization of calendar/contacts/tasks/memos like EAS does, but for people who don't have access to an EAS server... Honestly, I have a hard time believing that syncing locally over WiFi is really a selling point over any-time EAS synchronization.

Better yet, give the users an option... Open up a few ports on your home firewall/router and leave your PC on, and you can basically have your own EAS server... Or pay "us" $5 / month, and we'll host it for you.... Seems like a pretty solid business model
Tungsten T -> Palm TX -> TX & Centro (Good combo so far!)

Not Ready For Prime Time

SFO_TXUSR @ 6/12/2009 8:30:53 AM # Q
This is just the reason I have decided to wait 6 - 12 months before I replace my Centro with a Pre (or anything else for that matter). It seems that there are some loose ends that still need to be addressed. Also, I am not sure that I am that confident in Palm's ability to support its customers. After years of neglect, I am not sure if that organization will be up to the task, at this point in time.

Outlook sync essential

rpa @ 6/13/2009 5:24:31 AM # Q
Syncing with Outlook is critical for me to switch from Centro to Pre but I also wonder about the WebOS heavy reliance on the Cloud for syncing data from various address books and sources. Does this mean the Pre requires a data connection and/or wifi access to function? I travel internationally constantly and use a pre-paid GSM SIM card when overseas. Data roaming is a killer $$ wise so I don't bother preferring to use my notebook to connect to email and the internet. I like the Pre form factor but need a smartphone with pda functions but not an internet device. Anyone out there who can advise?
