I have enjoyed being a regular on the site, thanks for the hours of work it takes to keep the site informative.

Ditto on that, great job. I always enjoy reading the material posted here. I also like the layout -- it feels uncluttered, though in fact the left and right columns are pretty full. Probably just the liberal use of whitespace, but it works well.

Did you say he posted the 100K comment or that he's *posted* 100K times? Seems like the latter.

I'm sure the creep was watching the counter. Notice how he is absent of late? He probably got some sex -- and after getting the sex, the kiddie porn cops broke down his door and carted him away...

Mike, I don't think anyone found your post even remotely amusing. In the future, please keep your thoughs about child pornography to yourself.

You need to get help, Mike.

"Hypergraphic"? This coming from Mike Cane - the nutcase who's flooded/victimized the various PDA sites with over 10,000 messages in the past few years. You've probably posted over 5000 messages to Palminfocenter alone. How ironic. How sad.

Child pornography has nothing to do with sex, Mike. It's disgusting abuse of defenseless children. What Ms. Hackborn and any other individual of legal age choose to do with/to each other in their own free will is of no concern to me. But child pornographers belong in jail. Of course, I expect that since you're probably a longstanding member of NAMBLA, you see nothing wrong with child pornography. Perverts like you and Pete Townsend deserve to rot in he11. I always thought there was something creepy about you. Now we know.

Pa1mOne Handhelds vs Smartphones

LiveFaith @ 11/19/2004 6:08:32 PM #
Bradley says it at about 19:30 that they have reduced the investment in the handheld arena and focused it on the "growth" area of smartphones. Pretty good reason why the Tungsten TE2 is stripped down with little innovation.

He states at the end that Handhelds are 53% of sales in last 1/4 and smartphones are 47%, with the projection of 50-50 by the end of the fiscal year in June. In essence, the two Treos will equal the sales of the six handhelds until June. Based on my quick math, the handhelds average $258 retail per device, while the Treos average $500+. Follow the ca$h.

tfftruoa @ 11/19/2004 9:40:16 PM #
It's probably more than $500 for the smartphones. Phones are carrier subsudized, so what palmOne sells the Treo to the carriers for is probably signifigantly higher. Also, the handhelds with the most impressive sales numbers are the lower end, sub-$200 ones. Honestly, I'm surprised smartphones arn't making more money for palmOne than handhelds already.

It's slightly depressing. I prefer a two piece solution and palmOne is cutting their developement spending for the one piece I buy from them.

It's been reported that PalmOne has passed the 1 millionth Treo mark:

That's alot of Treos and alot of margin compared to pdas...

tfftruoa,
I think that's the sentiment of a lot of the Palm Pilot and Palm III crowd that has evolved with PalmOne. I would actually like to have a converged device but I want that nice HVGA screen on the T3.

If they would introduce a data-centric (that's Palm's word) "Treo" with HVGA and 64-128mb, then I would go on a money search in a heartbeat to buy it. The Treo 800g is the perfect answer. :-)

http://www.churchoflivingfaith.com/images/treo800big.jpg

You're right about average value on PDAs concerning > sales at the low end. That makes it even more de$irable. Although, creating crippled devices like the T5 is a good way to ensure that you'll lose that original 50% faster than expected. My oh my,, how hard could it possibly be to give the T5 at least a distinctive case design, the TCs WiFi guts, the Zire 72s voice recorder and the m505s vibr-alarm. Palm fans would be switching rapidly in many cases. Ohhh well.

LiveFaith: can you PhotoShop this: (the perfect smartphone)
The_Voice_of_Reason @ 11/20/2004 12:36:47 PM #
Your "Treo 800" is already almost the perfect smartphone design. Can you Photoshop a Sony Ericsson P910 type keyboard that slides out from (or unfolds from) the back of the "Treo 800"?

http://www.churchoflivingfaith.com/images/treo800big.jpg

http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-p910-en.shtml

That is the only way I can imagine Palm being able to keep the slick 5-way Navigator but retain a keyboard.

From wht I read the S-E world is not so crazy about the 910s "flop" keyboard. Awesome device, but the geometry and physics of that credit card thin flip keyboard supporting the entire phone while thumboard must be quite entertaining.

A friend of mine has the P910 and although the QWERTY thumboard is useless, it is still capable of supporting the weight of the mobile.
RE: Pa1mOne Handhelds vs Smartphones
JKingGrim @ 11/21/2004 10:43:25 AM #
That thumboard looks like it is abysmally small. I think a better design would be to have the screen slide up in landscape mode to reveal a large thumbboad underneath. This would be great for writing documents in landscape mode. The thumbboard would be nicely sized (kinda like the UX). The only downside is that the thumbboars couldn't be used in portrait mode (kinda like the UX). Thats not a bad tradeoff though. If PalmOne used an OLED screen, there would be plenty of space for it. A treo with a HVGA screen Cobalt an a keyboard like that would be a really cool PC replacement.

I have a mockup to show what I mean, but I have no where to host it.

I've used the P910 and the keyboard actually seems pretty solid. Small, but solid. What I was referring to would be to have a keyboard the same height and width of the Treo 600 that slides out from the back of the phone. The keyboard would be around half the thickness of the phone and Palm could even make the lower part of the "Treo 810" slightly thicker to accomodate this if necessary. If that doesn't work, I think your "Treo 800" is the way for the Treo to evolve. In fact, I was hoping that Palm would have tried releasing versions with + without a keyboard and give the market a choice. Handspring did this once and the keyboard won, but I think the size + weight savings of the "Treo 800" would make it a very popular phone. Have you emailed you design to Palm's execs? (The email addresses are usually first name.last name@palmone.com)

A Treo lineup with the "Treo 810", the "Treo 800" and a basic phone like the Sony Ericsson S710a, Z500a or T630 running Handspring's Smartphone OS would probably be able to quickly generate 75% of Palm's profits, with regular PDAs making up the rest. Adding the basic phone is by far the most important step, and unless this is done, the Treo Clones running Windows will probably "Netscape" Palm AGAIN within a couple years. Palm already has the OS and the hardware can easily be made TODAY, so there's nothing holding them back. The only question is whether or not Palm can put 2 + 2 together before they get squeezed out by Microsoft. What happens in the next year to the Treo lineup will probably decide whether or not Palm will still be around in five years.

I'd like to accept my award for posting PIC's 100,000th comment. (Were the other hundreds of thousands of comments back in the I.M. Anonymous days?)

I'd also like to thank the "little people" like Ska, Geeko, MikeCon and BubbaSteve. Without my minions, I would never have achieved this goal.

So what do I win, Ryan? A shiny new Sprint Treo 650 seems appropriate, don't you think?

;-)

Congratulations on keeping the site going all these years. PalmStation died, PDABuzz lost its focus and Brighthand got assimilated into the Microsoft Collective. But PIC is still the place to be. Be careful not to miss the Treo Train, though. (Take a look at the activity on Treocentral.com's forums to see what I mean.)

A silver bullet wouild be nice to give him. Preferably one travelling towards him at 22ft/sec/sec.

RE: Thank you, Ryan
G M Fude @ 11/20/2004 7:29:22 PM #
Okay Mike, now I can't let that post go... 22 feet/sec/sec is an acceleration, not a velocity. Have you fired a projectile weapon, or a self-propelled munition (like a rocket, f'rinstance)? A projectile will have a maximum muzzle velocity from which time it can only slow down.

GPS Solution for Zire 31

PePe @ 11/21/2004 8:17:24 AM #
Here in The Netherlands the GPS-Zire 31-bundle is sold for €328,- and that's actually quite cheap, even for Dixons. See the details at:
http://tinyurl.com/5vbad
(In dutch, sorry for the long URL).
It uses ViaMichelin 2.5 however, does anybody know how it compares to TomTom Navigator for Palm?

Congradulations to the guy who, after seeing his arguments go up in smoke, (and throwing all credibility aside)resorted to a malicious personal attack on someone who indeed wanted to participate and lend a voice "from within" the to add to our discussions.

...and CONTINUES to resort to peronal insults!

Easily some of the slimiest, lowest, most embarassing behavior I've ever seen here.

Congradulations to PIC, but I wish someone better representing our community was the person to trip the counter.

I agree, the unnecessary insults, name-calling and expletives must stop soon or I'll have to institute a R rated comment filter.

While the voice does make some good points, most of your threads turn into arguments and bickering when we could be having more constructive discussions and arguments :)

RE: What are you thinking, Ryan?
Alpha1220 @ 11/23/2004 6:20:40 AM #
Bit of a rant from a long time lurker, occassional poster. Has anyone else noticed in recent weeks the downward direction of many of the 'comment' sections because of the squabbles of a few individuals?

There is a difference between 'geekish' back-and-forth (which can be fun and enjoyable and is a characteristic of many very cool sites) and this bs name-calling etc, constant arguing, etc. which has been going on.

Step outside the very narrow world of this community: what do you think the reaction might be of someone who comes to PIC for one of his/her first times, looks to the comment section, and sees insults tied into 'child pornography'? Discussions completely off-topic?

Here, I'll spell it out: a lot of people judge a site partially by whether it offers an informed 'community' to debate articles, spread info, etc.

The crap that has been increasing of late on these sections = instant loss of credibility points to many, especially those who aren't aware of the otherwise good resources and historical background of PIC.

Please tone this down guys - its over the top and beyond the bounds of the classic 'tit-for-tat' which I spoke of earlier. Okay, I'm done. Back to lurking / enjoying PIC.

(And putting in a content-filter doesn't address the root problem, it only addresses a symptom of it.)
