RE: One Awesome Fone
You may have a bit of difficulty shoehorning a Zod HVGA into a flip phone. The point is that the smaller a screen gets, the density and effective clarity should improve. I personally cannot make the leap to the Treo (or this) because I covet my T3s HVGA real estate to much. That said, this little 320x320 should have significantly better screen density than your Zod and approaching that of the Dell or Fuj VGAs

Press release: CUPERTINO, California — February 11, 2005 — Apple® announced today that Steve Jobs will begin selling his own feces to Apple Cultists beginning March 1. Apple's new iPoo™ lineup is expected to easily surpass the iPod shuffle as the company's most popular product. Yes, Apple Cultists can already easily create their own iPoo™, but feces didn't seem cool until Jobs told them it was cool. Remember, kids: the ONLY cool feces is Jobs' highly individualistic, rebellious iPoo™ (coming soon in six different colors/flavors, including the red [hematochezia] and black [melena] U2 GI bleed model)

Yes, be sure to buy the oldest, largest, cheapest pocketpc with the lousiest battery life and most worn out battery you can get. Only that way can you really see how much ppc's suck these days....
OR
Do yourself a favour and buy the Loox 720 (with free upgrade to Mageneto in a few months), and forget forever about the POS devices. (thats Pile Of ...)

Try using an Axim X50v or something more current. Right now the only thing holding me back from buying a Treo 650 is one of these HP WinMob gadgets. If they work well, which isn't a given considering HP's track record, then I might just get one. If not, it's off to Treo land I go.

And nobody is holding a gun to consumer's heads you know? Believe it or not, people are actually buying Pocket PCs of their own accord. Aside from irate PalmOS fans and the usual partisan politics, I rarely hear such slander being flung by PPC owners in the general public. In fact, most folks I know that actually use such a device are quite happy with their choice. A recent study by Handango showed WM users having the most "satisfaction" with their device. Guess all those HotSync issues and Fatal Exception errors are starting to take their toll on PalmOS's once vaunted, and now mythical, rock solid reliability.
Until recently I owned an Aximx X50v, which I quite happily carried alongside my T5 and Zodiac. Some days I loved it, other days I wanted to toss it off a bridge (not the same bridge referenced by RhinoSteve of course). However, that pretty much mirrors my experience with the T5 and Zodiac. In fact, to be completely honest with you...I have had FAR MORE problems in recent years with my POS devices than I have with WinMob. The Treo 650 I was testing crashed if I so much as looked at it funny. VersaMail constantly reset the damn thing, and I spent more time staring at the boot up screen than my Address book! Often right in the middle of an important email, or document I was working on, the stupid thing would lock. Forcing me to reset and start over. HotSync crashes, Fata Exceptions errors, incompatible apps, file conversion hell, the list goes on.
POS still gets the gold star as my platform of choice, it's what I use every day. But I'm not blind to the fact that this platform is an old draft horse that's long in the tooth and being passed by other thoroughbreds on the track.

Ditto. Treo is one product PalmOne got right...in a BIG way. The only thing holding me back is the upcoming WinMob Treo, coming to a methadone clinic near you. ;-)

If small handheld computers were all about PIM's maybe Palm would still be on top. It looks like people want more.
In a recent poll on PPCT only 22% used the built-in PIM, while 72% used third party replacements. Clearly MS only builds the OS, and the rest is amply supplied by 3rd parties. People seems satisfied with this.

Mike, what do you find so apalling about the PIM apps? It's basic PIM. If you don't like the interface, try a different app. Or--and here's an idea--if the ONLY thing you care about is PIM, why aren't you using a Zire?
RE: Unlike hp, Samsung can *release* a phone...
RE: Unlike hp, Samsung can *release* a phone...
This new one is getting the royal promotional treatment as well, but just keeps getting delayed. Now all the way till November! It'll be a dinosaur as a Treo 650 comparison by then. IMO, Compaq had the best end-user hardware design team of all, until HP stole them away. Unfortunately it looks like the failed Jornada group is still in power over there.
To another poster: This HP communicator cannot be VGA. It is a square screen. VGA, HVGA & QVGA are all rectangular rez. This device will actually be 240x240 ... not very impressive. Also, It is not going to work with a host of WM/PPC QVGA/VGA software designed for every other device ever released. I wouldn't wanna be an early adopter.
Surur: Polls on geek sites like this don't represent the real world. That says 2 things. #1 Geeks are far more likely to load 3rd party apps #2 WM PIMs stink so bad that most have to $pend more to correct. One 'real' survey about a year ago revealed that most PDA users did not even realize they could download more 3rd party apps. I'm not against you, but I'm just saying that geeks like us don't really pay the bills down at corp HQ.
<
Foo: Man! And I thot I was a bit geeky to even use a PDA in public. Do you have a belt clip/holster for each or do you use a Batman toolbelt? "Let's see now, is that list in Tasks, Memos, MS-Word, on the TT5, the Zod or the X50? :-D
Finally: The "Jornada" group succeeded again in creating UGLY. How can they keep doing this?

Few people would disagree with you about most things you said.
Having said that, at least one of the reasons for the delay of this ppcphone is to get the new OS, which carry a host of ppcphone based improvements, such as one handed navigation. Previously HP was planning to release it with wm2003se, which would have been a disaster. The new OS will put it on a more equal footing with the Treo 650.
240x240 IS a poor resolution, and there is a lot of gnashing of teeth at HP's stupidity over at PPCthoughts. Having said that, most software except games should be functional at that resolution (with some scrolling possibly) since this is as much as it would normally lose with the on screen keyboard, which this device clearly does not need.
I like the form factor of this device, and as I used to have a HP 568 , so I clearly have nothing against HP's industrial design. I hated the Compaq's curves, and returned the one I tried the day after I bought it. Give me a HP 568 with a proper flip cover and dual slots any day over a flashy Compaq with only one slot. Of course its well know that shiny things sell over function, which may be HP's downfall :( My current PPC also has very conservative styling vs the Dell X50v's quirky design.
Regarding third party software. Its true that many people don't add third party software, but I hazard to say that on the ppc platform most people install added software, and the recent Handango survey found ppc users were very happy with the software and devices. Its quite possible that the people who are inclined to add software gravitate over to PPC, while the more timid users buy a Palm.
The HP 6300 series was a disaster with an underpowered processor, ugly add on keyboard, antenna, and an OS a generation behind the competition. This device will be a much better competitor.

Never would I be caught dead wearing a belt-clip or other impediment. I may be a geek, but I'm a geek with a sense of style! Besides, the Axim would clash with my purse. ;-)
I sold the Axim, don't use the Zodiac (it's sitting here collecting dust), and I rarely carry the T5. In fact these days I rarely feel the urge to lug around a PDA at all, which is why I find myself lured by the Siren song of Smartphones. The Treo 650 I just finished reviewing nearly had me whipping out my credit card, especially with the Press discount P1 offers. Truly awesome piece of hardware, despite instability issues.
But I'm still hesitant to go in this direction because I want to make sure I get the features I desire in a form factor and style I feel comfortable with. There are so many great new Smartphones hitting the market over the next few months it makes my head spin. I should be receiving an iMate JAM for review very soon, so I'll have yet another gadget to pacify my geeky needs.

RE: Unlike hp, Samsung can *release* a phone...
What? They aren't all rah-rah-ing over how it's better than 160x160? And it'd be like them to blame *hp* -- when it's *MS* that permits that screen res. PPCT's motto: Don't Bite the Same Ass You Kiss.
RE: Unlike hp, Samsung can *release* a phone...
Well 480x480 is also allowable under wm2003se, so yes, its entirely HP's choice which resolution to implement. The whole point of WM 2003se was to increase the form-factor options available to OEM's. WM 5 caries this forward.
This will mean some quirky devices from MS's 40+ licensees, but then hopefully there will be less accusations of cookie-cutter ppc's, and a bigger chance of making a hit device.

RE: Unlike hp, Samsung can *release* a phone...
The only really exciting PPC was the original hp 19xx (1910?). Then those dopes at hp screwed up that gorgeous precedent-setting screen with the yellow-tinged sequels.
RE: Unlike hp, Samsung can *release* a phone...
My point is simply that with greater diversity more tastes and needs are catered for.

Returning to the original topic, Samsung can release a phone, except in the UK and US. Palm's not the only smartphone to have a rough time over this - the D700 series was a great line of Symbian smartphones promised by Samsung but failed to appear.

Pulled 'em outta my a$$. That and what a friend working for one of Tapwave's suppliers told me. Sales at CompUSA have been beyond pathetic and a local manager told me they're going to be cleared out pretty soon. Once the Zodiac 2 reaches $199 I'll definitely pick one up as a souvenir. The Zodiacs were great hardware for the price - better than ANYTHING Palm is selling now - inluding the DeathDrive. If Tapwave had just put out the same Zod 2 specs in a Tungsten E form factor they would have done OK. Peng just wouldn't listen. Oh well.

Out of curiosity, when do you suppose that will be? Last i checked, the zod1 is alr $200. Zod2 at $265.
As far as putting a zod in a T|E form factor, NO NO NO! NO! The zods are supposed to be mobile gaming machines as well. That's how they can get their landscape orientation. Granted their gaming scenario isn't too good, and some people may have been turned off by how it looks like a GBA, but truly, the fact that their distribution/marketing channels sucked is what killed them. They could go under, show up on the news, and no1 still would ever heard of them :(
64 MB ROM?
Could it be a way of backing up the RAM?

RE: 64 MB ROM?
RE: 64 MB ROM?
But this is only for Palm Hardware, perhaps Samsung has chosen another way to include Chinese.
RE: 64 MB ROM?
There's also the res of the characters. If you have hi-res, use the hi-res characters that'll look MUCH sharper. And then some ppl elect to have Simplified and Traditional. I use hi-res traditional and the pdb for that eats up 1.65MB. Adding simplified may eat up another 1.5MB or so.
Perhaps Samsung is doing other things with it we don't kno of.
