Comments on: Graffiti for Android Receives an Update

graffiti android Just a few short weeks after the surprising release of a Graffiti app for Android, Access Co., Ltd. has already released two updates. Checking my Android Market this past Friday revealed a new v2.0 update for Graffiti. Today has already brought another update to version 2.0.1. The app remains a free download for users of all versions of Android.

Straight from the Market description, version 2.0 adds the ability to toggle between Japanese and English character input sets. In addition, several welcome features have been added to the standard English library such as word suggestion, auto-capitalization at sentence start, word learning and error correction. Access has also added a direct link to their own YouTube tutorial videos for those struggling with their Graffiti skills to the app.

What's the required Android version? I can't find it in my HTC Magic with Android 1.5.

With great power comes great responsiblity.

I couldn't find that either. Access' page is pretty much devoid of any system requirements. I'm thinking 1.6 as the minimum, but it's entirely possible that this app is for 2.0+ devices.

On AppBrain.com, it says, "Latest version: 2.0.1 (for all Android versions)."

I've turned off most of the new features. The only one I find useful is the initial word capitalization. By the time I read through the suggested words, I could have finished spelling the word I was entering.

I'm of the opinion that the greatest impact of Graffiti is on smaller devices. Perhaps on larger screens like the EVO or the Captivate, the on-screen keyboard is large enough to use. But on my Aria, my fingers are too big, I guess. I'm faster with Graffiti than I ever was with the keyboard.

Yep, the Pre is the same way. The onscreen keyboard is basically useless b/c of the size for me. The iPhone in portrait mode seems tolerable. The difference in the screen size makes the difference.

I'd like to see an informal survey amongst Android device owners of varying screen sizes & resolutions about the perceived effectiveness of Graffiti on those devices.

For me, my 3.7" Droid screen seems far better suited to Graffiti than the lame stock Android portrait keyboard. I'd really be most happy with Graffiti in portrait mode, Swype in landscape mode w/ slider closed, and of course the physical keyboard in landscape mode w/ slider open.

FWIW, Swype is still pretty laggy on my Droid, even with the 2.2 FroYo update (got it today--solid improvement in speed & stability but it still lags terribly in places). Graffiti would be ideal with a stylus on my screen but with a fingertip, the 4" Samsung Galaxy S screen size might be the best compromise. The Evo & Droid X I played with were quite usable with the onscreen portrait keyboard.

Gek;

Did you see above my note about FroYo? Droid 1 needed it worse than perhaps any other Android device. It fixed a lot of bugs & some (not all) performance issues and appears to have already introduced some new quirks. Nice to see the Evo get 2.2 before any other device other than the N1, especially since the Evo is a lot newer and runs Sense. Since the Droid 1 is an Android developer phone you'd think they would have had this out a month or so ago. It's a nice little update but nothing revolutionary by any means.

RE: Requirements
jms001 @ 8/4/2010 6:12:10 AM # Q
Don't be rediculous -- Graffiti isn't wagon wheels. It's just a different method of text input. The keyboard takes up a lot of space. Virtualizing it on the screen only works well for large screens and even then it takes up a lot of screen space. Slide outs can be a pain if you have on again off again input. For some, graffiti offers a good alternative. Its not everyone's choice, and its not optimal for all form factors, but it does have its niche. With that said, its niche may not be large enough for it to survive. Only time can tell.

Stop complaining about simple typos when you have bigger problems of your own!!

G as wagon wheels? Well, that's Exhibit 2,356 right there now, isn't it?

Waiting for Gekko to start his tears as he reads about something that will make his EVO feel like an original Palm Pilot in comparison:

[ABT Exclusive]TMobile's "Project Emerald" is HTC Glacier, has a dual-core Snapdragon CPU, three times faster than EVO 4G and benchmarks!
http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=20035

>>>Look at the EVO 4G (powered by a 1 GHz Snapdragon) score on the CPU test, 516 frames. The HTC Glacier's score is 1432 frames which is around three times that of HTC's fastest device at present. This can only be achieved by a dual core CPU.

That EVO is now evOBSOLETE!

Mike, whenever you get a phone the next device is already cooking. There's always something better if you wait. What are you using now?

Wifey just sent my new Centro through the wash (RIP my beloved Palm OS buddy) and now I think I'll stop at my local sprint store and get one of these Evos. The WiFi router is really cool, but Grafitti is now the clincher. I'll always have my wonderful TX at my side though.

the beauty of Sprint is the "Premier" perk that let's you upgrade every 12 months.

i've had my EVO now for 2 months which means i will be eligible for another upgrade in 10 months. i think my EVO will be king of the hill for another 10+ months - or close to it.

Graffiti runs quite well on my T-Mobile G1 - much better than the software keyboard and almost as the hardware keyboard. It has a 3.2" screen if I'm not mistaken.

A priest, a rabbi, and Gekko board a cruise ship. The ship hits an iceberg and begins to sink. The priest and the rabbi decide to help round up all the passengers and get them into the lifeboats. There are two seats left in the lifeboat when the priest spots Gekko standing defiantly on the bow of the boat. He turns to Gekko and offers him his seat on the lifeboat. Gekko shoos the priest away and says, "I don't look back - I only look ahead. I'd rather die than give up my luxurious stateroom for a dinky little boat." The priest gets into the boat and never sees Gekko again.

try to pay attention as i explain this again for you.

i use a password protected MS Word document with Strong Encryption and Documents To Go to store all of my passwords and sensitive data in one file. the beauty is you can open this file on any device in the world with MS Word or Docs To Go. Docs To Go 3.0 coming soon will support Office 2007 Super Strong Encryption/Password.

i like the free-flow format and the open standard of an MS Word File. i don't like some mom and pop locked proprietary closed format. and MS Word and Docs To Go is free if you already have it.

i then use Filezilla to FTP that file from PC to DriveHQ.com (free app, free FTP storage).

i then use the AndFTP free Android app on my EVO to access the Word Doc via FTP.

Back when I used graffiti on my Tungsten I was constantly frustrated as either it couldn't read my abysmal handwriting or, on a good day , it couldn't keep up with me.

On the Evo, Graffiti is great, if it were a choice of Graffiti or the standard keyboard, Graffiti would win hands down. As it is though, I can Swype much faster than either. If the voice to text could punctuate and capitalize through I would use it much more. I hate looking like an ee cummings wannabe.

Con-

Haptic feedback can be turned off in Android system prefs. I personally prefer it on. Also, I find that using a pinch to zoom or the little arrows in the bottom right corner work better than the double tap (you end up accidentially clicking on links with a double tap).

If you thnk the Evo is thin, wait until you try the Droid X. It's thinner than the Evo and its screen has a different aspect ratio (true 16:9) with more pixels (854x480 vs 800x480 on Evo). The Droid X made for such a good fondle that I actually have one on order. I am going to give Android one more shot on an uber-device...if it ends up as a stinker and HP doesn't get something very impressive out within the next 6 months, I may just go back to a TX + a dumbphone, damnit!

RE: Requirements

With Android there is NO conclusion to make. It will be trumped in weeks. Something new always come along in Andyland. Now if 4G had been active, I might have had more to say. And I would have liked playing with Sense on it too! What the hell did they do with Sense on that demo model?

Barnes & Noble has updated their Nook app and it can now be placed on SD. You gonna try reading some frikkin *books* now?!

RE: Requirements
hkklife @ 8/6/2010 1:06:26 PM # Q
I basically decided to go with the Droid X purely due to the screen resolution, better voice call quality, and more comfortable formfactor, plus I was able to get a pretty solid deal from VZW.

I prefer the Sense, WiMax, & the kickstand on the Evo, but the Droid X should deliver bettery overall performance, battery life, voice, and camera quality. I also like having 24gb in storage out of the box. I figure 3G is good enough for one more year, and then the WiMax vs LTE shakeout should be well under away. But you really cannot go wrong with the Evo, the Droid X or any of the Samsung Galaxy S devices right now. But like Mike says, that is all likely to change within two months or so.

I personally think 1Ghz on a smartphone is good enough. I'm more interest in network/call performance, onboard storage, and battery life. Same with increasing pixel counts on P&S cameras & phones. I'd rather have 2mp on a decent lens versus a grainy, heavily compressed 8mb image. Battery life is already prettty miserable at 1ghz. Dual core Snapdragons and 2Ghz cores will make it downright terrible. It's like when the desktop PC market hit hit 1-1.4Ghz or so with the Athlon and Pentium III/IV running Windows XP...unless you were heavy into gaming, editing, or encoding, that was the point when everything became "fast enough" for the vast majority of folks.

RE: Requirements
Gekko @ 8/6/2010 1:18:31 PM # Q

hkk - congrats - the Droid X is a solid choice. i saw one at the VZW store - they did a nice job. if i was on Verizon i'd probably go with that or the Incredible - but probably the Droid X due to screen size. once you go with the 4.3" display you can't go back to anything smaller.

when is it expected to arrive?

looking forward to your review!

RE: Requirements
hkklife @ 8/6/2010 2:08:32 PM # Q
Yes, I have determined that I will accept no less than a 4.3" screen or MAYBE a 4" one for a virtual keyboard. My fat hillbilly fingers simply cannot make do with anything smaller. If the Droid X disappoints, I'll gladly return it and get the Droid 2. The X is a fantastic feeling & well-built phone. In no way does it feel "big" and it's really nice when held in-hand. The Incredible is the Evo's poor cousin. I like the extra 54 pixels that Moto puts on their Android handsets as well.

Delivery is expected by the 18th, but most records have 'em arriving about 8-10 days after order. I will give a very thorough review of it when it arrives. Also, the extra internal storage will be much appreciated since out of all my Android apps, maybe 2 support install to SD card.

Believe it or not, Access releasing Graffiti for Android sorta sealed the deal for me wanting a bigger screen. I'm trying to do as much as possible when in portrait mode these days to get my efficiency up to Treo or Centro-like levels. I really dislike having to deal with a flaky accelerometer. The BEST feature on the LifeDrive was the hard button for screen rotation. If my Droid had that I'd leave the auto screen rotate turned off and just rotate with a button tap. How I miss some kind of left-side programmable "smart button" on this generation of smartphones like the old Palm OS phones & Moto dumbphones had!
