Comments on: Palm Pre Hands On Video

Palm Pre Hands On VideoNext in our series of videos comes a live hands on demo of the Palm Pre. I have spliced together some footage of the Pre at the Palm lounge following the announcement event. This video runs a little over 3 minutes and includes a hardware overview by Palm's Sachin Kansal and looks at a few of the webOS gestures in action. Read on for the video embed.

640x480 HVGA ... haven't heard of that one yet? :-)

1200mah cell ... not earthshaking for a larger (than Treo) screened device with constant web connexion, and CDMA/EVDO. Hmmmm.

I think Palm was smart to get this thing as far as it is and then announce it at CES. Remember folks, this is not the final version. Over on Engadget they are reporting that Palm is still tweaking the final design of both the hardware and software, so we can probably see good things coming. I feel pretty positive, especially since the Pre shows Palm listening to their public. I'm hoping that they will listen to some of the comments and questions we have now before doing a final release of the Pre or at least address some for the next device.

In reading different articles from different websites I've noticed that Palm is talking about releasing this to other carriers later and is looking at some possible changes before the final release. I hope they add a microSD slot and maybe host their own cloud desktop or let webOS work with the current Palm desktop. If not, maybe a developer will do this (as well as create a way to use legacy applications and data on the new OS).

Overall, I think Palm is off to a great start for 2009.

I "assume" DTG will get their piece to make some sort of Word/Excel/Powerpoint handler. I would seriously miss a document reader but that will come soon after. (3rd party no doubt).

I'm not happy though with the idea of my data being stored in Ed's home computer.

Yeah, me too - especially since Ed has a flag set up to sound an alarm when *mine* comes in!

Nice demo. I hope that they can make this work starting with only one carrier.

Hopefully Sprint has a 7 day exclusive before ATT, VZW, & TMob get versions. :-

I was hoping for a 7 hour exclusive. But, I could live with 7 days. My guess is that we will see it on other carriers beginning in January '10. My VZW phone is due for an upgrade, but I will take only a one-year contract so that I can get the Pre if it is available on VZW next Jan. By that time there should also be some applications available for it.

The one thing that impresses me with this video is they dropped what CPU it is. They are using the TI OMAP 3430 (http://ashhie.wordpress.com/2006/12/28/ti-omap-3430-multimedia-applications-processor/)

This processor has a lot in it that is not fully brought out. It is only a matter of time the Linux guys get into this and we start to see a whole lot of interesting apps running for it.

I would love to see a hardware and software Palm Pre run Skype!

I hope another video with a tour of the gestures is coming. I'd like to see that.

14.) Is webOS Linux based?
Yes, but developers won't get access to the Linux core.

Booo... Jailbreaker start your engines :-)
