No Wonder

This past week we've seen some big news, some of which I'm looking very forward to (Tapwave and OS6, in particular). I had no idea they were all from a PalmSource Conference! I guess that's what would've explain the full week.

Why do we essentially know little more about OS6 now than before Palmsource? Did attendees to the OS6 briefing sessions sign NDAs? Were some attendees shown more than others in behind-closed-door sessions? I'm fully aware that Palmsource wasn't rolling out OS6 at the conference and was only planning to give a "peak". However, NOTHING I've read is new wrt to the OS (obviously there were announcements such as those involving FAST and Tapwave etc but those really weren't about the OS per se). For example, do we even know such BASIC things such as whether there are changes in store for the file system? Is VG definitely included? What sort of Webservices will be supported? What sort of changes can we expect to the UI? What exactly did we learn at Palmsource regarding the new OS?

Given that you could create, modify and delete files and directory structure in the OS a couple of years ago, what are you looking for?

I believe this was already announced for OS 4.x and 5.x a month or so ago.

Seems like PalmSource is allowing the licensees specify their own 3rd party web solutions.

The presentation on Palm OS 6 was quite dense, and was focused very much on the technology that's powering OS 6, but not on the user interface changes or any activities by the licensees.

Since this talk was aimed at developers, a lot of it was designed to assure developers that it would not be a huge effort to get their applications working with the new OS. OS 6 was still have the PACE layer, and it will support ARMlets in the same manner that OS 5 does. It will also support native programming, but they didn't release details about this model, although they said they would work with a wide range of tool providers, from the commercial operations to the open source community.

This talk wasn't the exciting stuff; it was more focused on plumbing. A lot of the limits that hindered Palm OS applications in the past are gone, and developers should be able to move their applications to the new OS fairly quickly.

From their public statements, it looked like PalmSource is making a strong effort to allow developers to move a signficant amount of their code to the new platform. However, some parts of the library will require rework, and some of that rework might require changing the POL class interfaces. Right now, the specifications and APIs that would allow the effort level of porting POL to native Palm OS 6 have not been released.

On the other hand, PalmSource indicated that they will support PACE and ARMlets on the new OS, and since POL is a well-behaved library, it is reasonable to expect POL-based code to continue to work well on OS 6 devices.
