palmOne Stock Shakeups on Analyst Notes

palmOne shares dropped today in heavy trading on Wall St due to talk of a possible new smartphone from Nokia to compete head on with the Treo. Stock in Sierra Wireless has also fallen due to speculation the company is in danger of losing a contract with palmOne.

Investors Business Daily is reporting Market Analyst A.G. Edwards issued a note late Monday, saying Nokia may unveil a competitive device to Palmone's Treo 600 smartphone in the coming weeks. The news sent palmOne shares down over 11% to $32.65, on more than double the usual volume.

"Though we have no confirmation from sources, we believe that Nokia is readying a 'Treo-like' smartphone that pairs a keyboard with its Series 60 user interface and a higher resolution screen," said the firm."

Stock in Sierra Wireless fell sharply on related news. The stock was downgraded on speculation from market watchers that Sierra's palmOne business could be at risk since Sierra introduced a competing Microsoft Windows mobile based smartphone. Sierra supplies the wireless modem for the CDMA version of the Treo.

I guess P1 better put out some really dazzling stuff then!

What are the odds?

Nokia ain't no small timer, and they've been able to watch (if they've chosen to) P1's track record on product development.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Maybe Symbian is the next "little" OS to come up now that the Palm OS promises to grow and grow?

I'm honestly not cheering for either side in this becuse both have room for improvement.

It's ery interesting to watch. Let's see what happens!

Not only Nokia but other Series 60 licensees include Siemens, Samsung, Panasonic, LG and Sendo. PalmSource better finish their phone edition quickly and license them to some big players soon.

The Treo 600 and SE p800 have been the only top-notch expensive phones to ever be a success in the US. I don't think Nokia, despite how dominant they are in low/mid-range smartphones and in Europe, will have the know-how to enter the US high-end market well enough to overtake it.

Then again, I don't know a damn thing about smartphones, so who knows.

Competition breeds SUCCESS

If NOK competes against the 600, it is further proof that the 600 is the standard in the smartphone market.
And with PalmOne getting ready to up that standard with the next Treo, PalmOne is going to continue to bet and lead the pack.
PalmOne is large enough and experienced enough to innovate and deliver the right products to win.
NOK cannot with Symbian because PLMO already has COBALT available. And MSFT has an unstable uncapable OS that is soon to be labeled two years old.
The Sierra Voq smartphone has a form factor right out of 1997 and will not be adopted.
I regularly hear how large my 600 appears to many people.
NOK entry is just going to create awarness that is going to expand the overall market and that is a great thing.
GO NOK and GO PLMO/PSRC

Exactly - i am surprised that Nokia (being such a big player in the phone biz for so long) would essentially admit the treo's strength by releasing a model designed to compete with it. But having used Nokia symbian phones (series 60) and the 600 - it's easy to see why - its pretty clear the treo is a step above in both usability and power. IMHO anyway.

Series 60-like Treo?! Bla!!!

Sorry, but the thought of a non-touchscreen Series 60 phone with a thumbboard does NOT excite me. Now if it where a UIQ Symbian interface, that would be completely different! In fact rumors of a triwireless P1000 excite alot more than a Series 60 device with a thumbboard...

Btw, what the heck happenned to the the Benq P50? If anything, that is the closest thing out there that to the Treo...

gfunk, do you still find that you use your touchscreen a lot with your Treo? I've been predicting that Nokia would eventually wake up and pair their Series 60 OS with a thumbboard for a while now. I have no idea if this rumor is correct, but it sure makes a lot of sense (and is long overdue). I'll be interested to see how it all pans out. Now, if Nokia would finally move up from MMC to SD and Sprint would offer this with their affordable unlimited data plan, I could really be interested.

The Series 60 Sucks!!! thats my opinion at least. i have used numerous series 60 phones (7650, 3650, 6600) and i just couldnt see how it can be called a "smart phone" with pda functionalities. stylus less input just doesnt cut it...even for just using the basic pim apps. symbian software does not compare to pos and ppc software.

the only nice smartphones that are symbian based are the p800 and p900. but, i still wont go symbian over palm due to lack of functionalities.

head to head...symbian, specially the series 60 versions can NEVER compete with POS feature and power wise.

the problem is that most consumers are NOT power users. all they need to do is call, send sms messages, and sometimes, use it for wireless gprs web browsing and sending/recieving email.

Series 60-like Treo?! Bla!!! we say!

but if the people are not "tech-savvy" enough to realize that nokia series 60 phones that almost cost as much as "smarter" phones (pos, ppc based) then palm1 smartphone segment will still lose.

less profit for palm1 = bad for us palm users.

now give me that t5 :)

Scott, truthfully for my daily email, browsing, and sms related tasks, no. The Treo 600 really integrates the thumbboard and 5-way functionality so well, that in many case you never really have to take out the stylus out of the silo. However, there are many gaming and graphical/drawing related apps that would be uttterly worthless w/o a touchscreen! In addition, there's sooo many apps (including medically related) I have on my Treo that I fear I couldn't possibly replace on a Series 60 device...

Series 60 like psion 5 : small keyboard but not thumbbord, no touchscreen, open to serve (clamshell form), ...
If P1's shares drop, what about RIM (blackberry) ?
All that is only speculation, like oil.

Yea, I have to say, my Series 60 experience wasn't exactly a great one. The whole 'Bluetooth only' sync experience was a huge, unreliable pain. On top of that, after loading upwards of 5,000 contacts onto a Nokia 6600, the contacts app became completely incapable of doing a search for any specific contact without freezing up. Kind of made the whole 'smart phone experience' a useless one.

On the other hand, after I returned the 6600, I picked up a Treo 600 and have never been happier with a piece of mobile technology. I thought I would hate the size, but it's not that bad and, with all the other Treo's I'm regularly seeing out there, maybe somewhat acceptable fashion-wise to the rest of the world.

Good luck to Nokia as competition is a good thing, but I have a hard time believing they're going to recreate the success PalmOne's had in the U.S. smart phone arena.

Confused analyst confusing Nokia 9300 as Treo-like?!

gfunkmagic @ 9/1/2004 11:42:11 PM #
I was if this supposed analyst was referring the the recently announced Nokia 9300 as the "Treo Killer"?

http://tinyurl.com/4u9pk

This is the little brother of the clam shaped Nokia 9500 Communicator, except it will NOT have wifi and run Series 80. It was rumored that this device was going to be released in October 2004, and it be curious if this analyst was referring to this device as Nokia answer to the Treo600...
