PDA Protector Coming for Sony Clié (Updated)

The PDA Protector, distributed by Kennsington, is a hardcase that has proved popular with Palm m500 series owners. A Hong Kong company named Idea Production House is now working on a version for the Sony N and S series. It is a clamshell design that opens upwards and is shaped so that the user can reach the Jog Dial and Back button on the handheld when it is open. There is an opening that allows N760C or N710C owners to have their headphones plugged in when the case is closed. Pricing and availability aren't yet available and depend on finding a U.S. distributor.

The PDA Protector will come in Silver Blue, White, Silver Black, Titanium and Purple. Despite the color name, all of these are made of aluminium with a magnetic clasp.

The case is 5 by 3 by .75 inches and weighs 2.65 ounces.

These will be sold under the Dr. Palm brand name. They will not be available through Kennsington like the m500 series version.

Update: Despite what I originally said, there will only be one version designed for both the N and S series. -Ed

Neat, but I wonder

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 11:19:39 AM #
Will they have a belt clip? I'll probably buy one, if I can put it on my belt. I currently use a Targus leather case with beltclip. I don't really like having the unit in my pocket.

Tip DS

There's no belt clip for the m500 version which makes me think there won't be one for the Sony ones, either.

Belt clips can be found for about $5 at most electronics stores and electronics sections of super stores. You can get them as just a single piece clip that mounts to the item, or with a button that mounts to the item (yes, with a very strong adhesive) that allows you to slip it into the belt clip on your belt. I used one on the back of my old cell phone and palm hard case, and they work fine.

You can ALWAYS add a belt clip
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2002 7:47:50 AM #
Even if doesn't come witha beltclip, you can always add one for $5U.S. I have added beltclips to my DSI and Brando hardcases by purchasing a $5 universal cellphone beltclip kit at your local Target, Walmart, etc.

Works awesome. See for yourself:

http://www.cdpug.net/reviews/brando.htm

The Brando case required the use of Epoxy glue, but the double sided adhesive works perfectly on the DSI case.

If you put on a double sided adhesive for a belt clip with the Kensington, what will happen is the thin rubber that is sprayed on top of the case will pel right off!! I don't like the Kensington's for that reason..

Great but what about the T series?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 11:45:23 AM #
Great for N & S series, but what abou t the T series owners? Are there any similar hard case protectors available or in the pipeline?

See the CLIE Source thread at http://www.cliesource.com/cgi-bin/forum.cgi?number=18&thread=000395

It looks like there will be both hard and soft cases for the T-series CLIEs soon.

Compare to rhinoskin

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 11:46:36 AM #
"The N series version is 5 by 3 by .75 inches and weighs 2.65 ounces."

and rhinoskins hardcase for m505 is

"Size: 4.8" x 3.5" x 0.8"
Weight: approx. 2.25 oz"

not much difference right?

im thinking of getting the kensington hardcase since i finally realized the rhinoskins sideflip is hard to use. but the palmhardcase came to my mind too.
can you compare palms hardcase to kensingtons case for m505?

Not in this article, as it would be off topic to go into a lot of detail about Palm cases on an article about a Sony one.

I stongly recomment you read the reviews of the Rhinoskin case:
www.palminfocenter.com/view_Story.asp?ID=2484

The Kennsington one:
www.palminfocenter.com/view_Story.asp?ID=2415

And the one from Palm:
www.palminfocenter.com/view_story.asp?ID=2879

and make a judgement for yourself. If you would still like other people's opinions, please post them under one of those reviews.

Thanks

Trust me: You do NOT want a Rhinoskin ANYthing. Cases poorly align, fail to protect Palm Vx, and DAMAGE both the PDA and the stylus w/ in a very few uses. Customer service is either "blame the customer" or "rude" -- sometimes both. Not worthy of being in the Palm community....

aluminium with a magnetic clasp!?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 12:00:19 PM #

"all of these are made of aluminium with a magnetic clasp"

Breaking some new ground with this little inovation! :)

why?

RE: aluminium with a magnetic clasp!?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 12:44:02 PM #
There are two magnets in it. Think, people, THINK.

RE: aluminium with a magnetic clasp!?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 9:46:06 PM #
nothing wrong with magnetic clasp , it fits tight and keeps your handheld in place. I have one now for my M505.

Wow! You people are dense! This was obviously a reference to the irony of the quotation. The last time I checked a magnet did not work on aluminum.

It was a joke. Wake up!

Only One Version

Ed @ 2/19/2002 1:17:24 PM #
I was able to get in touch with a company representative and get more info. Despite what I originally said, there will only be one version designed for both the N and S series, not one version for each. Sorry for any confusion.

I'm trying to get a release date and plans for a T series model out of him.

Ed,

Do you have the company contact? I am a distributor and I am keen to explore the possibility of distributing their products.

MobileMitch @ 2/20/2002 10:47:14 AM #
Oh wow. If they made one for the T series that will make it a lot tougher to resist the temptation to upgrade my 505.

The kensington is the 3rd hardcase for my 505 and my 5th hardcase overall and believe me when I say it is the best one by far. There not being one available for the T series was one of my good excuses for not thinking about upgrading to it.

Do they have a webstie?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 4:10:35 PM #
Anyone know their web address? Ed?

If they did, I promise I would have given you a link. The company rep said it is under construction, too.

the dr palm email address isn't working as far as I can tell.
I did try the other one though, awaiting a response.
Looking forward to getting this case, it looks perfect for what I need it to do.

Using this Hard Flip Case with Cell Phone

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2002 11:53:34 PM #
I think this is exactly what I've been looking for.

I've been looking for a case with a sturdy enough flip top to support a velcro-attached cell phone for browsing the internet via InfraRed.

I think this would do the job. Using a couple pieces of sticky velcro tape, I could open up my PDA, slap my cell phone onto it so the IR ports line up, and browse the net without worrying about disrupting the line of sight.

Yes, I am a nerd.

Re: Kensington Case

friends...
i am a proud owner of the palm m500 series case by kensington. an i'd just like to say that while rhinoskin and palm were still lacking in the choices of cases for the m500/505 i came across the kensington. not really sure if it was what i wanted, i took the dive and I LOVE IT!

VERY safe from bumps and dinks, great case for quick access to your pda. and i feel safe holding it in the case... great grip.

i'd say to anyone considering using the kensington brand to give it a try. i even bought the new palm case and took it back, because i just love my kensington.

Fit &Cheap

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/21/2002 5:58:13 AM #
I've just bought it in Hong Kong. It's cost HK$190 (US$25), price is reasonable. The weight is light and the magnetic clasp makes it tight when close and I feel safety. I still can use the Jogdial and Back Button with the case, but the Hold Button is covered by this case (my Clie is n760c). So I think this product is more suitable for n6xx than n7xx series.
