Photo Blogging From Your Zire 71

Forall Systems has released a new appplication that makes it easy to update and maintain a digital photo blog from your Palm Zire 71 handheld.

ForPhotos is a Palm program for automatically creating a photo web page using the built-in camera in the Palm Zire 71. The service composes of ForPhotos on your Zire 71 and requires you sign up for a free 1-year photo web page account on ForPhotos.net or any other compatible service.

Then simply take photos as usual with Palm's photo application. When you do a HotSync, the photos you've selected will be uploaded to your photo webpage. Both Mac and Windows versions of the synchronization software are available.

ForPhotosIf you already have your own photo blogging site, you can use ForPhotos to automatically upload photos to your own site. All you need to do is implement the server-side XML-RPC interface used by the ForPhotos conduit. The specification for the interface and a script for testing your server can be found here.

does this ad show often? I use safari and don't have to deal with the pop-ups. Use Mozilla Firebird to block pop-up ads if you're on windows

I second MrBond's comment about switching to Mozilla Firebird. It is an incredibly awesome browser with some real innovative features.

While popups are annoying, unless you are willing to start sending your own money to this site's owner to keep it ad-free, I'd suggest you simply download a popup blocker like Proxomitron and be grateful you're still getting something for nothing.

This is an incredible idea! I've never really wanted a camera built into my PDA but I can really see how this would be a great way to share your life with relatives. We moved across the country from our families and only get to see the once a year at most. I might have to reconsider that Zodiac I've got my eye on.

Yeah, but an SD camera (or a directory of Jpegs on the SD card from a digicam) on a Tungsten C with wireless updates from anywhere in the world would be cooler. Desktop conduits are so passe...

Yeah, support for the Tungsten C with the Veo camera would be cool... Basically it means copying the posting code into the device app (from the conduit). I hope this is possible, as there are other devices (like the Treo 600) which have both network connectivity AND a built-in camera) which would be even better suited to this than the Zire 71 (for on-the-go photo blogging).

Finally, I'd really like to see support for posting into a Gallery (http://gallery.sourceforge.net/) photo site. That would be really slick...

Wow, thanks for the great suggestions! We were already planning to add support for the Veo, Treo 600 and Clies. Now I'll have an excuse to buy the Zodiac too.

We hadn't thought at all about adding support for jpegs on the sd card (from a digital camera). That is easy for us to do and it seems be quite useful.

We can definitely add wireless support. We have done similar wireless synchronization with websites before, so it isn't a technical problem. Personally, I still prefer using my desktop connectivity for doing the photo uploads. I get impatient enough waiting around for my email to download to my phone, so I like that the photos are uploaded during the HotSync. I could definitely see why other people would like instant wireless updates to their photo blog.

Those with WiFi might be very interested in this too - what with some new SD WiFi cards coming out.

I'm particularly interested in this for the Clie UX50, since that really is the most amazing foto-blogging machine out there.

How about blogging from a T2 with Veo camera?

Support for the Veo camera and the Sony devices is _really_ planned. We will add support based on what it seems will be popular. So far we've gotten the most requests for (in this order):
(1) Treo 600
(2) Clies
(3) Veo

We thought about this alot and decided rather than charging for the website, that we would let users configure ForPhotos to upload photos to whatever website they prefer.

We've published the specification for the interface the ForPhotos conduit and website are using here: http://www.forphotos.net/hosting.php

If all you want to do is upload your photos to a directory of your choosing, then we've written a simple PHP script that will do that for you. If you want to try it out, send me email at kjeffrey@forallsystems.com and I'll send you the script and some directions. I think this should be enough to provide basic support for Gallery.

Our hope is that over time other photo websites will add support for our interface. If anyone is interested in doing just that, feel free to get in touch.
