New Centro Colors Pictured

Centro LimeFollowing up on yesterday's news item on the possible upcoming availability of two new Sprint Centro colors, some official looking press shots have emerged of both new offerings courtesy of the SprintUsers forum. The high-quality leaked images show the green to be a rather muted, almost "wasabi" or "pistachio" in appearance. The rose-colored Palm Centro definitely has a unique look in comparison to the older pink Centro, with a much darker appearance. Read on for the full sized shots.

No word if there might be any additional software-related changes to accompany the new Treos but it's fairly safe to assume that purchasers of these new colors will likely receive the latest ROM version with the recent Sprint update pre-installed along with standard Google Maps My Location functionality.

Woot Deal on Garmin GPS Kit for Palm Smartphones

For owners of Palm Treos possessing a fullsize SD, SDHC or miniSD slots, Woot Sellout has a very limited-time offer on Garmin's Mobile XT GPS navigation kit. For $49.99 + $5 shipping, users can get a very solid smartphone-based navigation solution that is compatible with every Palm OS version of the Treo ranging from the 650 to last year's 755p and the older WM-based Treo 700w/wx/750. I believe this is a slightly older Garmin bundle that the one we covered last fall. It's advisable to act fast if interested, as Woot's offerings are usually very limited quantities and sell out quickly.

Palm Needs a Savior Editorial

Wired Magazine's Gadget Lab blog has published a new editorial by Brian X. Chen entitled "Palm Needs a Savior, and Treo Pro Won't Cut It". This piece takes a harsh look at Palm's new Treo Pro, especially when compared against a slew of increasingly competitive devices from HTC, RIM, Apple, and any number of handset manufacturers.

In short, Chen claims that the new Treo Pro is merely a stopgap device—a "floatation device" as he calls it—to bridge the gap between Palm's Windows Mobile-heavy 2008 and their "hopefully revolutionary" device(s) next year, presumably running the new "Nova" Palm OS replacement. In his editorial, Chen posts several notable quotes from a telecom industry analyst, a Palm spokesperson, and Peter Hoddie, the president of streaming media software developer Kinoma. The wide array of responses quoted in the article touch not only on the new Treo Pro but also Palm's current activities and future outlook.

Palm Treo Pro Review

Treo Pro ReviewThe Treo Pro is Palm's second new device of 2008. The Treo Pro brings something to Palm's lineup that has been sorely needed in recent times, a dramatically refreshed smartphone that delivers a modern new look with the features to match. The Treo Pro runs Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 and also makes its mark as the thinnest Treo smartphone to date. It further enhances its profile with a pleasant amount of innovative new features packed into the Palm's most attractive new design in some time.

Unlike many past Palm smartphone introductions the Treo Pro is premiering as an unlocked model first in most markets. The device will be made available online at Palm.com for $549 USD beginning sometime this fall. Being an unlocked device it comes with a higher than normal price tag because of the absence of carrier subsidies and discounts. However, customers do gain the option of bringing their own SIM card and phone plan to use on the GSM network (AT&T or T-Mobile in the US) of their own choice.
