StyleTap Palm OS Emulator for S60 devices in Beta

StyletapWhile not as popular in the United States as competing smartphone platforms, the Nokia-owned Symbian S60 OS enjoys widespread popularity in other global markets, especially in Europe. So it will come as great news to many current and former Palm OS now on Symbian that the StyleTap Palm OS emulator has now entered the beta phase (albeit a closed beta) for Series 60 devices.

The Symbian-Guru site, recently posted a detailed initial impressions overview of the StyleTap Symbian S60 beta build. For users curious to see how touchscreen-enabled Palm OS apps are ported over to a non-touchscreen S60 environment, the article details the use of an on-screen cursor to highlight the appropriate onscreen areas. Apparently no use of hard application buttons or a directional pad is provided. Several admittedly coarse-looking screenshots are included within the article as well.

Los Angeles Palm User Group Meeting September 13

On September 13, the Los Angeles Palm User Group (LAPUG) hosts Sprint's Mike Blecher, Senior Account Manager and member of President's Circle Sprint-Nextel Business. Mike will discuss three Sprint devices: the Palm Centro, Blackberry Curve and Samsung Instinct. Besides contrasting the Centro with the other two, he'll also contrast the Instinct with the iPhone, since Sprint considers the Instinct its iPhone killer. And since AT&T recently presented their Blackberry offerings at this meeting, he'll contrast what Sprint offers in terms of Blackberry devices and service vis a vis AT&T.

LAPUG, recently resurrected last October, meets in Santa Monica, California, the second Saturday of each month. All interested in Palm and competing handheld devices are welcome to share in discussions. The agenda and further meeting details are discussed in the LAPUG Yahoo group.

Palm Announces New Corporate Environment Philosophy

Treo Pro GrassAlong with the new green-ish Sprint Centro color comes news of a new "green" initiative from Palm. Officially entitled "Palm Environmental Stewardship", this effort has been hinted at in the high quality yet waste-free Treo Pro packaging that's vaguely Apple-esque in its simplicity and design. Palm has now posted a new page to the corporate section of their site highlighting their commitment to the environment using a variety of eco-friendly techniques such being RoHS-compliant since 2006.

The new Treo Pro is, unsurprisingly, the focal point of the new section's focus and it stands to reason that this is just the tip of the iceberg for a revamped corporate initiative in product packaging and aesthetics, as you can see in Ryan's unboxing and initial hands-on video preview from a few weeks ago.

Mobile Version of eReader Store Now Online

ereader Palm OSLong-time e-book seller eReader has finally made a mobile browser-optimized version of their online store for wireless users, including full support for Palm OS devices. Launched last week, the beta mobile "m.ereader.com" version of the site features almost the entire functionality of the full version, including the ability to input eReader's weekly discount coupon codes when making purchase. The eBooks are delivered OTA to the user's Palm OS device as an encrypted PDB file (tied to the purchasers' credit card information) and can be saved in the internal memory or to an external expansion card.

"We've just launched our new mobile website. Now you can browse, buy, install and start reading right away from your mobile device. Great for last-minute purchases before boarding that airplane. Just point your mobile browser to m.ereader.com."

Extended Capacity Palm Centro and Treo 800w Battery Released

Centro and Treo 800w BatteryIn what is certain to be received with a sigh of relief from power users everywhere, longtime accessory aces Seidio have finally released a higher-capacity OEM-sized battery for the Palm Centro and Treo 800w.

First up is the new Innocell 1350. This new release fits both the Treo 800w and Centro under their stock battery doors. Packing 1350mAh, an improvement of 15% over the stock 1150mAh battery, the boost provided by this battery is not as large of a leap forward as Seidio's past batteries. However, considering the slim dimensions of the stock Palm battery, any improvement is greatly appreciated, especially with the power-hungry GPS and wi-fi capabilities built into the Treo 800w.

Third Party Treo 800w Audio Adapter Cancelled

An employee from the Accessory outfit Seidio has quietly confirmed via a forum post that Seidio's plans to release a microUSB to 3.5mm stereo headphone adapter for the Treo 800w has become much more difficult than originally anticipated. Therefore, according to the company's representative seidioseidio, Seidio has postponed (IE: cancelled) their plans to produce the adapter.

Treo 800w users wishing to utilize their existing high-quality stereo headphones or earbuds must therefore install a microUSB 2.5mm headset adapter and then a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter (such as the cumbersome Palm model I reviewed here) attached to that. The only alternatives for kludge-free music listening on the 800w remain Bluetooth A2DP wireless and the handful of standard microUSB stereo headsets on the market.
