Palm held its quarterly conference call today with analysts and investors. The call covered Palm's financial and business performance over the quarter, new initiatives being developed at Palm and talk (or lack thereof) about recent takeover rumors.
Takeover Rumors
Several questions were raised about the recent takeover rumors. While the standard we won't comment on rumors and speculation response was given, at one point Ed Colligan became slightly perturbed by a question regarding a potential sale and stated "We are focused on operating our stand alone company and driving our plan and are not going to comment on rumors out there." Palm CFO Andrew Brown also remarked, "Management is 100% focused on running this business as a independent market supplier of mobile computing products -- end of story."

By midmorning Thursday, Palm shares had dropped 9.3% to trade at $17.64. The price is still up 25% from its level in early February, when the most recent round of buyout rumors began circulating again.
Most analysts have expressed skepticism about such a deal from the beginning, reports MarketWatch. Deutsche Bank analyst Jonah Goldberg wrote that such a buyout was "extremely unlikely" at the stock's current price. "Moreover, our analysis indicates that a financial buyer would be unlikely to pay a premium to the current price." Bloomberg also reports that Merrill Lynch and JPMorgan are also saying Palm is not likely to be acquired.
Palm will be reporting earnings and holding its quarterly conference call later this afternoon. Check back for a report later today.

Earlier in January, Palm released a free Microsoft Exchange
Direct Push Update for the
Treo 700p and
680. The update is now available for the
Treo 650 for a fee.
Treo 650 users wishing to update their device can purchase the
direct push update for $2.99 from Palm. However, in order to make use of the update you have to have a copy of
VersaMail v3.5, while most standard 650's ship with v3.1. So if you do not have VersaMail v3.5 you can also
purchase it separately from Palm for $12.98.
Palm OS based Treo smartphones have long been able to use Exchange ActiveSync to access Microsoft Exchange Server information using Palm’s VersaMail email client. The new update enhances VersaMail by adding Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology, which gives users connected to an Exchange Server fast, automatic wireless updates of email, calendar and contact information.

Pretty much every technology related website and blog is recycling yet another highly speculative rumor regarding Palm's imminent sale.
Unstrung, citing sources close to the situation, again claims Nokia and Motorola are leading bidders, and private equity firms Texas Pacific Group and Silver Lake Partners are also interested in buying the company.
Rumors of this nature have been one of the driving forces moving Palm's share price over the past two years. Late last year Palm CEO Ed Colligan emphatically told reporters that the company is not currently for sale nor had they made any overtures to find a buyer.
Palm is due to report its Q3FY07 results and hold its quarterly analyst/investor conference call this Thursday. To date, Palm representatives have refused comment on the rumors, but the issue is sure to come up during the call.

Following their
recent 1.10 update, the folks over at
Softick have released
Softick Audio Gateway 1.11, now with full
Treo 680 compatibility. In his announcement on the forums, developer Arseniy Prujov also put forth an interesting theory regarding the better-late-than-never 700p ROM update. If correct, this should be welcome news for 700p owners, albeit long overdue...
