When
Pocket Tunes 4 arrived on the scene back in December ’06, one of the most welcome additions was the new “Sleek” UI. In our
Pocket Tunes review, I called it “a welcome and much-needed improvement over the cluttered and, well, ugly High Fidelity interface of pTunes 3.” Based on customer feedback, Normsoft and Gx5 have further refined Sleek in the months since, claiming to “improve the listening experience”. Have they succeeded? Read on for PIC’s mini-review…

With the release of
Space Docking Simulator,
Mohammed Bennouf of SimToGo has returned to the setting of his greatest Palm OS glory...space! SimToGo's first foray into the Palm OS game scene,
Lunar Lander Simulator, was a very serious and challenging title that offered a realistic depiction of the Apollo moon landings. Space Docking Simulator is a handheld-sized depiction of the difficult space docking phase of the lunar missions. The player must control the Apollo command module and complete a successfully dock with the lunar lander.
Several difficulty levels are available for players of all experience levels. An informative 23-page PDF manual is provided with the program. Many of the great features and attention found in LLS are present in this followup title...even the digitized voices from Houston Mission Control!
Space Docking Simulator for Palm OS is available now for $9.95. A free demo version is available for download.

Astraware's Cubis game is now the latest recipient of a version update. Comprising this pretty significant update are overhauled menus and graphical enhancements throughout. Also, one-handed operation has been added so as to make the game more Treo-friendly.
Astraware are being pretty mum on details for this final improvement other than calling it "updated support for newer devices". This could mean anything from support for the Treo 700p and 680 (the previous update for the Palm OS version of Cubis is dated Feb 7th 2005) to support for an upcoming, unannounced Treo such as the rumored 755p.
Cubis v 1.30 is available now for $19.95. A demo version is available and it supports all Palm OS5 devices. A Pocket PC/Windows Mobile version is also available.

Palm has introduced another product in their rapidly-evolving personal GPS solutions lineup. Hot on the heels of last month’s
GPS Navigator Smartphpone Edition 3 bundle, Palm has announced a new GPS Navigator Car Kit for the
Treo 680 and
Treo 700p models.
This new GPS solution eschews Palm’s previous usable-but-fiddly adjustable mounting bracket and separate Bluetooth GPS receiver in favor of a all-in-one solution with a GPS received integrated into a charging cradle with integrated speakerphone capabilities and improved charging capabilities. Given the sometimes unreliable nature of the Palm OS Garnet devices’ Bluetooth stack, this hardwired GPS solution looks to offer a faster, more reliable navigation experience.

Normsoft has quietly released an updated version of
Pocket Tunes Deluxe, bringing this app up to version 4.02. The return of screen blanking on Tapwave Zodiac features is the main addition in this update. Previously it had been unavailable in all earlier 4.x versions.
Also newly added is MTP communication capabilities with Windows Media Player 11. MTP is a proprietary Microsoft protocol, commonly found on products like the Creative Zen line. MTP is akin to UMS for portable media devices but somewhat more restrictive and limited only to Windows XP and Vista-based machines, so users of WMP 11 under XP and all Vista users may appreciate this addition.
Version 4.02 can be downloaded here or from within the app using its integrated auto-update feature.

Palm's set of tools for installing and transferring applications to Treo's and handhelds are currently
not compatible with Windows Vista. Palm is certainly taking their time on an update, while Vista users go without critical Palm Desktop functionality. While there are some workarounds (installing via Bluetooth and downloading on-device over the air), a third party developer has released a new Vista compatible install tool.
BTSolved's TreoVista Simple Installer software enables you to install PRC and PDB files on Vista. The program requires that Palm Desktop and hotsync software is installed. The utility is freeware and is considered beta.
