Palm Opens Five New Stores in California

Palm today announced the opening of five Palm Retail Stores in California. These new stores are part of Palm's 3-year-old strategy to reach new and existing customers where they spend time, in airports and malls. It also allows Palm to own the customer experience, a strategy that has worked for other consumer tech companies.

Forbes Predicts Upcoming Treo Releases

Forbes has a new article on Palm's upcoming product launches. Based on a conversation with a market analyst, the article claims UTMS & EVDO Palm OS Treos could arrive next year along with a new mid-range line of Treos selling for around $200.

Sprint Treo 650 Update
Palm has released a small update for the Sprint Treo 650. The E911 firmware update is designed to improve the ability of emergency response personnel to locate users who dial 911 from the Treo.

The latest version of WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment (CLDC 1.1 /MIDP 2.0) is now available for users of the Treo 600 and Treo 650 smartphones, Tungsten T5, Tungsten C, Tungsten T3, Tungsten E2, Tungsten E, LifeDrive, and Zire 72 handhelds. The Tungsten W, Tungsten T2, and Zire 71 handhelds are no longer supported. Thanks Dave.

SuperWaba 5.5 has been released. SuperWaba is a VM for PDAs and Smartphones. Because of the way SuperWaba was written, you can use Java to develop for it. The SuperWaba SDK allows for cross platform apps on Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Linux. New in this version is a faster ARM native virtual machine and better database handling.

Missing Sync Version 5.0 Released

Mac Missing Sync for Palm OSMark/Space today announced version 5.0 of their award-winning Mac synchronization software, The Missing Sync for Palm OS. This major upgrade improves syncing with the Address Book and iCal applications in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, introduces folder synchronization, Spotlight searching of memos and adds synchronization of iPhoto albums and iTunes playlists.

Palm Has No Plans to Support Symbian

In another recent interview Palm CEO Ed Colligan confirms that Palm has no plans to release a device based on the Symbian operating system.

Ed Colligan Would Not Have Spun off PalmSource

In an recent interview Palm CEO Ed Colligan states that he would not have spun off PalmSource from Palm. He stated that he would "probably not" have separated the operating system group had he been in charge at the time.

Palm Opens European Smartphone R&D Centre

Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm, and Micheal Martin TD, Ireland's minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, today announced that Palm, has opened a Research and Development Centre at Swords, Co. Dublin, with the support of IDA Ireland (Industrial Development Agency). The centre will develop custom software applications for Palm Treo smartphones for the mobile operators in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

IDC: Market for Handheld Devices Continues to Decline

The worldwide market for handheld devices experienced its seventh consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline in the third quarter of 2005. According to IDC device shipments decreased 16.9% year over year and fell 8.8% sequentially in 3Q05 to 1.6 million units.
