Sony Develops New Small Screen Technology

Sony has developed a new LCD screen which integrates a number of peripheral circuits on the screen for increased reliability and reduced bulk. The 320x480 (half VGA or high res+) resolution display supports a 260,000 color capability. This screen is a very likely candidate for use in Palm OS devices which will include the virtual graffiti input feature.

Handspring Names Ed Colligan President

Handspring, today announced the promotion of Ed Colligan to the position of president, effective immediately. A co-founder of the company, Mr. Colligan will also continue to serve in his role as chief operating officer, overseeing the company's worldwide marketing, sales, operations and engineering.

Palm Funds New SD/MMC Content Publishing Company

Palm Inc.'s Solutions Group today announced its investment in and strategic relationship with a new content publishing company. Mobile Digital Media, Inc. is chartered with accelerating the development of content and applications for SD and MMC media cards. It will aggregate, publish and distribute software for handhelds and mobile phones.

HandSpring Offers Free GSM/CDMA Springboard Phones

Sprint PCS Wireless Web Digital LinkHandspring is now offering the Sprint PCS Wireless Web Digital Link CDMA springboard for free. One simply needs to pay the cost of shipping and a service plan with Sprint PCS. The springboard turns any visor with a springboard slot into a fully functional mobile phone with wireless web access. In addition the Visorphone, which operates on GSM networks, has also been available for free with serice activation for some time.

PalmInfocenter is now running in a temporary, overload mode due to very high traffic. News stories will only display the top 50 comments in order to ease the load on the server and keep the site running smoothly for everyone. As the situation improves we will bring back comments in thier entirety. I am also hard at work on some server/code optimizations. You can still post & view comments, but when a story has more than 50, only the first 50 will display.

Rumor: Additional Pic and Details on the Palm Tungsten T

Palm recently announced all of its high-end products will be part of the Tungsten line. Its new smartphone will be called the Tungsten W and there is also the Tungsten MIM Solution a wireless email and groupware access suite.

PIC Reader adimiron writes, I've been hounding the local Verizon Wireless retailer about the Kyocera 7135 and tonight was rewarded. The Verizon rep confirmed that I would be able to buy the phone in 6 weeks (no exact date was given, though shipments apparently come in on Fridays). It was said that the price would be set at around $600 without a new activation. Nothing was said about a discount for new accounts.

WiFi SD Card Coming Next Year

Back in June, SyChip announced that it was developing an 802.11b SDIO card. Recently more details have been released on the company's website. It will be able to do both peer-to-peer networking and connect to network access points. SyChip plans to have the design process finished, a prototype made, and the drivers ready by the end of this year.

Matsushita Co. (Panasonic) has unveiled a working prototype of a SD (Secure Digital) memory card with a 1 Giga byte capacity. The card is expected to go on sale a year from now. It will be the first to use a higher 20M bps transfer rate (10x the speed of current 128mb cards). -robrecht

PalmSource announced they are working with Weblink Wireless to enable wireless e-mail, text messaging and mobile Internet access via WebLink's ReFLEX(R) network to wireless messaging devices running Palm OS 5.
