The
Targus PDA Mouse converts the Graffiti area on any Palm OS handheld into a what is essentially a trackpad. It creates a cursor which is controlled by finger movements on a stick-on overlay. It is intended for people who use alternate text entry methods, like a clip-on keyboard or Jot, as it doesn't allow Graffiti to be used. It is available now for $20.

Pimlico Software has released
DateBk5, the latest version of its calendar and scheduling app. The new version includes extensive use of color, including color icons and backgrounds. It also offers a single, large, tabbed dialog for handling all the global preferences and many other improvements. It includes support for the high resolution screens on both Sony and HandEra devices. It is available now for $25.

Handspring has announced deals for both current handheld owners and Cingular wireless users.
The company has created the Trade up to Treo program, which lets owners of any existing handheld get a rebate for $100 off the purchase of either the Treo 180 or 180g. There are a few restrictions, the main one being the Treo must be bought at Handspring.com. This offer is good now through June 2.

Sony recently released a new group of handhelds, the NR series. The new flagship of Sony's Clié line is the PEG-NR70V, which has a very impressive list of features. It has a 320 by 480 screen, a digital camera, a keyboard, an MP3 player, a 66 MHz processor, and 16 MB of memory, all crammed into an innovative design. News Editor Ed Hardy has this review.

Dr. Palm has created a leather flipcase for the Sony T615C. It has been designed to protect the handheld while still fitting into a pocket or purse. Of course, it includes cutouts for the Jog Dial and HotSync port. A cable will be necessary to HotSync without removing the handheld from the case; both won't fit in the cradle. Silkyboard II keyboard for the Palm i705, in addition to the one for the Sony T series mentioned last week. -PR
The LEDhead Palm Preview Edition simulates the classic electronic LED (light emitting diode) based handheld games of the 70's. The Preview Edition only supports the game "Football II", but a full version as well as a color version are currently in the works. -Peter Hirschberg

Palm Inc. will release a wireless handheld that uses the GPRS standard sometime near the end of this year. This comes from Daren Ng, sales director of South Asia/Australia and New Zealand, quoted in the Philippine website
INQ7.net. From Mr. Ng's brief description, it sounds like it won't have voice capabilities. "It will be a Palm-branded wireless data device," he said. This will make it a successor to the i705 and not a smartphone.

Eric Benhamou, the interim CEO of Palm Inc., did an interview with
Cnet in which he discussed his company's plans for ARM/Palm OS 5 models and competition with the Pocket PC OS.
He talked about Palm moving into the second phase of handheld computing. The first phase was centered around PIM apps, like the Address Book and Date Book. The second phase will still make use of PIM apps but will also include multimedia capabilities, like audio and video.
