Comments on: Sprint Exec States the Pre Didn't Work Out
"The Pre didn't work out as well as we hoped"
He went on to acknowledge the phone struggled since its debut and even claims that part of the issue was an unspecified lack of supply. A rather curious remark considering there were very few reported supply issues at and following the Palm Pre launch. When asked about the iPhone, Brust said "we'd love to have it."

Enough excuses. He needs to either put up or shut up. Between the iPad, iPhone, a dozen decent netbooks and a dozen decent Android devices there are multiple choices available. If he (again) finds a ludicrous excuse not to buy it will prove that he has NO intention of EVER buying anything. All he can do is obsess over future devices, only to come up with some BS excuse not to buy. Enough is enough. He needs to STFU if he is not willing to spend his rent/pizza money on something new. (Of course, the fact that he did not buy an iPad shows he will NEVER buy any new device.)
Prediction:
Michael will bore us with even more bull about how he is now going to wait for another unreleased device (HP Palm?).Then a year later it will be another Apple device that he pines for. Then two years later it will be something else. And so on, and so on. Meanwhile he keeps using a 10 year old monochrome Sony CLIE S320 to keep track of his "Cooking with Spam" recipes and his collection of Ralph Nader speeches.

Michael Cane last bought something new in...
He is full of shite. He won't be buying an iPad - or any other new device, for that matter. Michael is all about talk. Just ask him when was the last time he actually purchased a *new* PDA or laptop. Probably over a decade ago. He has zero credibility with anyone that has even the most basic tech knowledge. Michael's total experience is derived from his manic reading of online gadget sites coupled with whatever time he can eke out on store demos before the managers kick his leeching azz out for preventing REAL customers from trying out the devices.
Any suckers want to be me that he doesn't get the iPad any time soon? Place your bets...

RE: HTC EVO 4G review
My Palm TX is dying. Rapidly. But the programs I use most often don't have Android equivalents *YET*.
I want a new device, but I want only ONE new device. I don't want to carry two or run one in an emulator (i.e., Classic on a PRE). In a year, I suspect my options will be greater.
But I can't wait a year.

really? you have no problem with the EVO hardware?
my how gracious of you!
yeah i know it's really tough to like a 4.3" display, 1GHZ processor, and 4G network.
RE: HTC EVO 4G review
Buy another TX on E-bay or a Centro (preferably the refreshed 128mb model) since it sounds like there's nothing out there that feets your needs.
If you must go with an Android device, get one with HTC Sense. It's the only way to have a usable form of Android for things like photo viewing, PIM, email etc.
Best Android device overall: Evo 4G
Best Android on Sprint: Evo 4G (duh!)
Best Android device on VZW: HTC Incredible (or Moto Droid if you are a more casual user and insist on a physical keyboard)
Best Android device on T-Mob: Nexus One
Best Android device on AT& T: Nexus One
In fact, the devices above are the only current Android handsets even considering. Anything running Moto Blur or Android 1.6 or older is a non-starter.

RE: HTC EVO 4G review
hkklife, buying a TX on ebay does not address the "I'm no longer interested in carrying around multiple devices when one can do the job" issue.
And a Centro is right out. I'm not giving up screen real estate for a thumbboard, or else I'd already have gone that route.
I do, however, fully agree with you on the appeal of HTC Sense. The Samsung Galaxy S looks like it'd be a great device on spec, but I've never been a big fan of UIs produced by Samsung.

what PalmOS apps are so critical and unique and irreplaceable to that you must cling to a 14 year old OS and 10 year old hardware not to mention juggling, fighting, and fumbling with a PDA and a dumbphone???
it's time to finally step your game up! it's 2010!
RE: HTC EVO 4G review
Sounds like a Moto Droid is the best currently SHIPPING product to fit your needs. Sure, it's pretty barebones stock Android but at least you are assured:
1.Compatibility with everything
2. Timely updates (presumably less frequent than Nexus One but far more than the skinned Sense/Blur etc devices that will likely never see an update to FroYo)
3. Tons and tons and tons of hacks/mods/user community support. Free Google Maps nav is a nice freebie too.
4. They are going for free (or close to it) now and you get good coverage with Verizon. Who is your currrent dumbphone carrier of choice?
The Droid has, to the best of my knowledge, the largest (and best quality) screen on a device with a physical keyboard. Google I/O just showed some small but decent improvements for Android 2.2 today, so that might be your best bet. PIMs will still suck compared to Garnet but we all must learn to live with that.
I have a sneaking suspicion we'll never see a screen larger than 3.7" with a physical keyboard device. The Evo would certainly be too large and 4.0" would probably be pushing it. If you can hold out a few months longer, the Moto Droid 2 is rumored for release in the July-Sept timeframe. It'll be a mild refresh of the current Droid and will have a better 5mp camera, better keyboard, 700+Mhz CPU and (presumably) Android 2.2. No Blur UI either.

RE: HTC EVO 4G review
If SmartList To Go or HanDBase had Android ports, I'd probably sacrifice other software desires of mine in an instant. SmartList doesn't seem likely to ever make that transition, and Dave's been working on HanDBase for Android since last year, but it's still preliminary and doesn't sync.
I actually have a lot of freedom in my choice of carriers, as I can easily end my pre-paid account. And that also gives me a lot of choice in my phones.
The question is whether there is any sense in accepting Gekko's challenge to step up my game when that involves giving up necessary software for nice-but-not-necessary improvements.

what??? i say create your own DBs, Lists, etc. on the PC with MS Excel or Word and view/modify on the Android device with Docs To Go and never have your data locked in and be chained to closed proprietary black-box mom and pop software again!

You have no idea what's in the data I'm referring to, and you have no idea what I do with it on my PDA. If I wanted to use a spreadsheet to manage and view the data, I wouldn't have used Microsoft Access to begin with.
In a perfect world, I'd have either the skill or the money to construct an online solution.

2) Jailbreak
3) Get StyleTap for Classic PalmOS
4) Get Android for iPhone OS:

RE: HTC EVO 4G review
Android: too fragmented and suitable for techie-types IMO. I don't want to spend time building an ecosystem that meets my needs.
Apple: great integration but one is tied to Apple and must sync thru iTunes. Great consumer device though.
WP7: wait for SP3 but does anyone really think M$ can deliver anything other than bloatware? By the time SP3 is out, the technology will be old as well.
Symbian: too many steps to get to what you want to do. Really makes the simplicity of Palm attractive.
WebOS: haven't tried as I need an unlocked GSM model but the emphasis on the cloud is not realistic for international travelers like me (roaming charges).
RE: HTC EVO 4G review
You summed the current state of the smartphone industry up very, very well. I'll repeat my usual mantra: "Every smartphone platform is currently shit, especially if you are a happy Palm OS user looking to upgrade." The only exception to this is the iPhone and that's only if you can happily exist within the Apple/iTunes ecosystem.
Android: I don't call what Google management calls it, fragmentation is still fragmentation. The PIM capabilities of Android (especially the stock barebones Google Experience Android) are worse than a 14 year-old Pilot 1000 and the OS can be brought to its knees by a single poorly-coded app (and there are MANY, MANY, MANY of those even amongst the stock apps in ROM).
Apple: Ditto. Apple needs more hardware choices & formfactors ASAP. And no, an iPod Touch + iPhone + iPad is not nearly enough. As you said, however, it's a sublime consumer device, especially if they move to a more cloud-centric model and maintain optional hardwired synchronization.
WP7: It's already DOA. M$ might as well pull a Fooleo and kill it at the 11th hour and start over from scratch. WM 6.5.3 (or whatever the latest is) makes more sense as a Garnet replacement than does WP7. A shame, really, as the Zune is a decent music device and Windows 7 is the best reason to buy a new PC ages for ages.
Symbian: This is a total non-starter for those of us living in the USA so I cannot really comment.
WebOS: Yes, Palm had extraordinary tunnelvision/ignorance/arrogance when designing WebOS. They basically assumed everyone who was a potential WebOS customer wanted a Pre, was on Sprint or was ready to switch to Sprint, lived in metropolitan areas in the USA, never traveled oveseas, only wanted a CDMA device, had never owned a prior Palm OS device, and had $100/month to blow on wireless service.
Righw now, my recommendation is to buy another Centro (you can still get 'em new, cheap, and unlocked). Barring that, the best alternatives are probably one of the last of the top-end WinMob 6.5.x phones, an iPhone, or whatever Android device formfactor you like the most.

RE: HTC EVO 4G reviewthings go
I ponyed up the full price on ATT last week and absolutely love the thing. Just got CompanionLink to xfer all my Palm OS Cal/Contacts/Memos/ToDos over and it handled it without flaw. All 3,500 contacts came over and co-exist smoothly beside Facebook and other Synergy goodies. Access to contacts is super fast even w/ out categories. Just bought Classic and brought over the last remnants of all my Palm OS dinosaur apps and databases easily in drive mode. Even brings PIM data into classic for old fashioned lookup if things go awry in a pinch. A nice place to fall back until I get up to speed. Notifications leave everything else in the dust. Svelte OS.
I've got more learning to do, but I'm telling you that if pitiful little Palm could pull off such a phenom in 14 months, imagine what is in the pipeline for later this year. My expectations have been far exceeded so far. I love this device more than I thought.
Palm could have rocked the world and stayed independent if the Pre had not gotten landlocked on Sprint (and their pitiful ad campaign), had at least a 3.5" screen instead of the 3.1". The Pre size should have been the lower rage device IMO with a larger screen device.
Yes, it's hard to overlook those killer HTC and SE bigscreens. But if your a Palm fan, Apple and Android are not going to come near as close to what you like IMO.
Get a Pre. If it stink IYO, then return it in the grace period and move on. But don't give up based on reading OpEds online when Palm has been consistently improving the HW and SW, and most likely has newbies right around the corner that will make me envious.

How much memory do you have left after installing all your stuff? This was one of my worries about using Classic. I have a ton of memos on my Treo. Maybe I didn't analyze this fully. Oh well. I hate these 2 year contracts. I never before used a stand alone pda for 2 years. Always got the new Palm, usually in about 6 months or 9 months it seemed.
Have a nice day!

RE: HTC EVO 4G review
Ditto on the Palm PDA thing. I basically managed 2x upgrades per year (depending wildly on whatever Palm was putting out at the time, of course). From the Palm V era onwards, I was able to basically sell a 6-month old device to recoup most of my purchase price on the replacement device. The best run was 2002-2003 IMHO. Between the Tapwave Zodiac, the endless array of Sony Clies, and Palm's stretch of high-end Tungsten hardware, it was the last of the really good days of Palm OS.

RE: HTC EVO 4G review
I brought the baby and the bathwater over in Calendar all the way back to my 1998 IIIe SE. Have not had a lot of time of real world usage. But, it's all there. Categories are a big loss on for me b/c I keep @ 3-4 important calendars separate in Palm OS. One solution that I will look into is multiple online calendars, which WebOS can sync to an differentiate from. Synergy is truly seamless and functional. I'm not Google etc cal fan, but if it allows me to look at each calendar seperately, then I'm game. Also, I don't see year view yet, and I used that quite a bit.
Is that enough to be able to speak here, or is it just "next" as usual?
That's the conclusion that I came to here. Am I going to hang on to a Centro/Treo dinosaur or switch to one of the other 4 smartfone platforms. Almost went with HD2, M$ is abndoning that platform. BB is to stodgy, iPhone & Android are even farther away in the PIM department. I settled for the smaller loss of the Pre, but my expectations of the device are miles ahead of what I thot.
Loaded the wagon on about 20 homebrew apps last nite. Reminds me of the early Palm OS days except they have a cool homebrew app that lets you donload directly off the device like the AppCatalog. Cool beans.

RE: HTC EVO 4G review
Well let'see. If you're talking @ 3 presses of the cal bubutton to see month view, then slower. If your talking @ leaving Blazer to go to Cal then returning, then faster. If your talking @ contact access on your TracFone fajittabowtit!
I'm not yet comfortable getting aroun the cal, but it's quiet robust. Missing categories of course. Otherwise I like it, but we'll see in a few weeka how it worx in real life.
The main issue here is ... Are you gonna hang on to the Zen that's rapidly dying_ with a postage size screen and archaic HW and SW (Centro), or leap light years forward in a device and lose some zen along the way yet keep most of your functions pretty close (Pre), or totally switch platforms for the killer HW and lose any vestige of Palm OS simplicity. Easy decision for me.
But I don't have a Clie + TracFone solution either. Geeeesh.

Once the HTC EVO hits Sprint, what happens to the Pre/Pixi?
Unless Palm can release a new phone with hardware competitive with the iPhone 4G and HTC EVO, the rest of 2010 will be a complete disaster for Palm's sales. Palm may be better off not releasing another disappointing phone and just waiting until their hardware is competitive before they return to the market.

After the way Gekko hammered home the virtues of Sprint to me -- and iPhone owners hammered home to me the crap service of AT&T -- I'd love to have the iPhone on Sprint now too.
