Comments on: Palm m515 PDA On Sale for $39

PDAParts, an aftermarket PDA parts and service company, is currently selling the Palm m515 handheld for $39.99. The company is even offering free shipping through this weekend. The m515s that they have up for sale are refurbished and come with a cradle and charger, you can download the software from Palm support. While it's still a nearly 6+ year old handheld, it could still be a useful as an organizer or as a fancy desk clock or digital photo display.

The Palm m515 debuted in March 2002. It was the successor to the m505 and included a number of improvements such as a much better color display and additional memory. The m515 runs Palm OS 4.1 utilizes a 33 MHz Dragonball VZ processor and has 16MB of memory. It weighs in at 4.9 ounces and includes a rechargable battery, a 160 x 160 pixel screen and a SD/MMC expansion slot.

I remember the m515... it was announced something like a week after I got my first palm, a IIIxe.

The m515 was my second Palm, after the yet-to-be-equalled Vx. Actually got mine in late February 2002, a week before the official release. Still have it. Still works fine.

The m515 was/is the epitome of the perfect "pure" PDA. Still unmatched even to this day IMO.

The m500 series refined the innovative Palm V formfactor and the m515 improved greatly upon the m505 and m500 (newer OS 4.1, brighter screen, more memory, most build quality quirks worked out).

In fact, the only things going against the m515 relative to the older models are its lack of a backlight Graffiti area and the fact that some late production OS 4.1.2 m515s had that atrocious Graffiti 2 pre-installed instead of the classic G1.

If you can live without audio output, online connectivity, and SD card storage of 1GB or less, this is a fantastic deal.

We know the 515 is old-but it was great for it's time. I have a 40lb Western Electric payphone in my garage and an older beautifully restored 3-coin payphone in my den. I use a WWII era Norelco 10-band shortwave radio, tube-powered regularly because I like it. I am not shunning new stuff-I have plenty of Plasma and LCD and Blu-Ray. Point is, all that other stuff is old and slow but some people like them for their character.

This isn't for the likes of us, the kind of people who actually frequent a Web site like PIC (man how my wife laughs at me lol). It's for all those untold masses who still have yet to adopt electronic organization. And there are more than you might think. :)
