TRGpro Drops by $30

HandEra has dropped the price of the TRGpro to $220, down from $250. The company also offers a bundle that includes a TRGpro and 16MB CF Card for $225.

The TRGpro has held its value surprisingly well, considering it was released in October of 1999. Contributing to this is the fact that it's one of only two Palm OS models with a built-in Compact Flash slot. CF is the most frequently used type of flash memory and is significantly cheaper than most of its competitors. The other Palm OS handheld with a CF slot is the HandEra 330.

HandEra recently released drivers that allow the TRGpro to use 802.11 wireless networking CF cards. Of course it can use CF memory cards but it can also use other types of CF peripherals like GPS receivers, barcode scanners, wireline modems, and more.

The TRGpro uses the same connectors and general body shape as the Palm III series, which allows it to use most peripherals designed for the III series, including keyboards, cradles, etc.

Another factor contributing to the TRGpro's long life is its flash RAM and HandERa's release of updates which allow it to run OS 3.5. The company hasn't released a version of OS 4 for the TRGpro and hasn't committed to doing so. It's possible the company is unable to fit all the required software into the TRGpro's 2MB of ROM.

The TRGpro has 8 MB of memory and runs the 16 MHz Motorola DragonBall EZ. It has a monochrome screen and an enhanced speaker.

Despite its age, the TRGpro is comparably priced with the Palm m125 and has a similar feature set, though the m125 has a faster processor. Some would argue the TRGpro has a better screen and there are certainly far more peripherals available for the CF slot than the m125's SS/MMC one.

Yes, it's only temporary, in honor of St. Valentine's Day. If you really don't like it, you can register and pick any background color you like (hint, hint.)

actually, the default is monochrome, so if you realy insist, it would mean that the site is only for monochromatic people....just read the articles, answer the poll and quit trying to make things into something they aren't...

sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...

TRG Pro Rules

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/14/2002 8:43:04 PM #
It was the best Palm ever and it let me keep all my add-ons from the PIII. With the newer H330 HandEra is on the right track to providing backwards compatibility for users like us. Now only if there's a color screen ... :)

RE: TRG Pro Rules
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/15/2002 12:38:24 AM #
I agree with you. A color screen with replaceable lithium batt will be nice. 320x4something should also be inlcuded.. CF and SD is such a great combination (since im using both =).

but since im used to slim...it wont buy me.

OS4 won't fit???

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/16/2002 11:35:46 PM #
Ummm, let's take a look at what they HAVE stuffed into the TRGPro... (ROM Date 6/29/01)

* OS 3.5 and apps.
* CF Modem drivers.
* CF Ethernet drivers.
* VFS Support.
* Card access software.
* Backup/restore software.

And they've got 240+k left over.

What exact gain is OS 4 over this, from a user standpoint?

It seems most of the OS4 aps work fine as soon as the programmer figures out that maybe they should check for VFS support directly instead of just polling for OS version and making assumptions.
