These models will be run Palm OS 5.0 on a 200MHz ARM CPU. They will have a High-Res TFT 320x480 screen, 16 MB RAM, 16 MB ROM, a new wireless expansion slot, Memory Stick slot, a built-in voice recorder, MP3 player and an internal mini keyboard. The handhelds will have the same clamshell form of the previous Sony NR series.

Sneak Peak: Cambio

Cambio is a program concept, from PalmSource, designed to facilitate exchanging and sharing programs on your handheld. It takes advantage of both Bluetooth and IR to transfer rated lists of apps in a pseudo, P2P file sharring like manner. PIC correspondent Davy Fields caught a demonstration by PalmSource and brings us this sneak peak.

Review: InnoPocket Screen Protection Filters

The screen is probably the most easily damaged part of a handheld. There are several things people do to protect them and one of them is use the aptly named screen protector. This is a thin transparent piece of plastic that goes over the screen to protect it from scratches. InnoPocket makes versions for Palm's m500 series and Sony's T and NR series. News Editor Ed Hardy has this review.

Toshiba Announces Smaller Bluetooth SD Card

Toshiba was the developer of the SD Bluetooth card Palm is offering now. The company has announced that it is close to releasing a new version that is smaller and uses less power.

Possibly the most significant improvement is that the new card is .35 inches shorter than the old one and no longer has a slight bulge at the end. This means it will come much closer to fitting entirely inside the handheld than the current one does.

Palm Lowers Price on m515

With the release of the Palm's first OS 5 handheld coming near the end of next month, Palm has reduced the price of its current high-end model, the m515. This handheld has dropped from $400 to $350, the first price reduction it has seen since its release this Spring.

The company has not dropped the price of its wireless handheld, the i705. Palm will also be announcing the Tungsten W late next month, a wireless handheld that is a noticeable improvement over the i705.

Quickies: Samsung, Falch, SL/SJ Cases, DateBk5, and More

Samsung has renewed its license of the Palm operating system. Under the terms of a new agreement, Samsung will continue to develop and market smart phones based on the Palm OS through 2005. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Samsung will release two new Palm OS smartphones in the near future, the SPH-i330 and SPH-i500. -PR

Falch.net updated its DeveloperStudio to version 2.7, which will give Palm OS developers the ability to create software optimized for Palm OS 5. The new version also gives developers the opportunity to test apps on the Palm OS Simulator, which will let them compile ARM code as a native Windows DLL. -PR

PalmSource and Good Bringing GoodLink to Palm OS

PalmSource has teamed up with Good Technology to port GoodLink to the Palm OS. The GoodLink wireless corporate messaging system works with Microsoft Exchange Server to give handheld users a continuously synchronized wireless connection with Microsoft Outlook accounts when they are away from their desktops. There was no word when GoodLink for the Palm OS would be available

Handspring Restructures, Changes Marketing Focus

Early this year, Handspring's CEO Donna Dubinsky said her company would be switching its primary focus from making Visor handhelds to making Treo smartphones. It took a big step in this direction this week, changing the main focus of its marketing efforts from selling its products in retail stores to selling them through wireless carriers. This process has already begun with the Treo 300. Sprint is in charge of marketing this new CDMA smartphone, not Handspring. The company plans will make similar deals in the future with other wireless carriers.

Rumor: Sony to Release NX Series with OS 5 (Updated)

An anonymous source has give CliéSource the description of a pair of future Sony handhelds called the NX series. These will have the same form factor as the NR series, including the clamshell shape and built-in keyboard. They will run Palm OS 5 on an Intel XScale processor. Like the NR series, they will use a 320 by 480 screen.

Update: An annonymous source has given Geek.com some pictures and details on the NX70V. This source says it will use a 200 MHz processor and have 16 MB of RAM. A spokesperson from Sony has requested that these images be removed from PIC and we (reluctantly) consented. -Ed
