webOS Skin for Windows Mobile Demo'd

PreOne webos windows mobile Pity poor Windows Mobile, which in the last few years has swiftly gone from leader of the mobile OS pack to laughing-stock, in the wake of shiny new competitors like webOS, Android and the iPhone. Just to rub salt in the wound: drmad from the ever-creative XDA-Developers forum was working on an excellent-looking webOS skin for Windows Mobile, but has ceased development due to incompatibilities between Wisbar Advanced Desktop (on which the skin relies) and WinMob 6.5.

webOS Developer Webcast on September 9

O'Reilly have posted details of a new developer webcast on Palm's webOS, to be hosted by Software CTO and webOS development book author Mitch Allen at 10am PT on September 9. The topic is "Application Basics". It'll be interesting to see whether or not this presentation proves as popular as O'Reilly's last webOS tutorial, which was held before the Pre or the webOS SDK had made it into public hands.

Native Google Voice App in the Works?

palm google voice Google Voice: rarely has a utility used by so few caused such consternation. The still-in-private-beta service has been making waves in the tech press of late, specifically in regards to Apple's rejection of a native app from their jealously-guarded App Store. Apple's blunder is another company's opportunity, though: the high-profile spat between them and the FCC has led to other platforms that feature such apps (namely, Android and Blackberry) receiving a wave of free publicity. So naturally, one would expect that Palm are looking to hop on this bandwagon too. Right?

TechCrunch's Michael Arrington is reporting (via anonymous sources) today that Palm is indeed planning to "roll out an official app some time in the next month or so". The problem is that since Google Voice currently lacks a public API, deep integration with the service - which relies on a seperate, Google-provided phone number - is impossible. Palm Infocenter turned to the friendly experts on all things webOS & Mojo-related at Pivotal Labs to get their take on what's required. Their VP of Business Development, Christian Sepulveda, was happy to share. Hit the jump for his thoughts.

Palm's Q1 FY 2010 Conference Call: September 17

Happy days, Palm stock-watchers: the company has announced that they'll be hosting their Q1 FY 2010 financial results conference call on September 17, to be hosted by CEO Jon Rubinstein and CFO Doug Jeffries. With a bit of a luck, we'll finally get some solid details on Pre sales figures, the international GSM release and maybe even some clarity on those wildly varying return estimates. Or maybe we'll just the usual corporate obfuscation. Full press release after the break.

So Where's the Palm Pre webOS Facebook App?

palm facebook When former Palm chief Ed Colligan invited Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg onto the stage at CES in January, to regale the tech press with tales of the social networking company's awesomeness, there was little doubt in most of our minds that there would be a native Facebook app for the Palm Pre, in addition to the Synergy integration with webOS's PIM databases. (Yours Truly was confident enough to predict exactly that in February.)

But the Pre launched without such an app, and months have gone by with no positive omens - apart from an early homebrew program, in FriendsFlow. Meanwhile, the iPhone is about to receive its third iteration. So what gives? PalmInfocenter reached out to Facebook for iPhone developer Joe Hewitt to ask whether or not he was involved in a webOS app. His response:

CNBC on Palm's Last Throw of the Dice

pre dice CNBC European Business has put out a new feature article entitled "Last Throw Of The Dice", focusing on Palm's phoenix-like rise from the ashes throughout 2009. There's plenty in here that us Palm-watchers already knew, but also a few interesting tidbits that we didn't.

Reporter John Brandon secured an exclusive interview with Palm's VP of Design and former Helio exec, Matías Duarte, who offers a few choice quotes regarding the Palm Pre's gestation, along with the usual round of guesstimates from analysts.

Palm Pre webOS Virtual Keyboard Install Guide

palm pre virtual keyboard webos Got a Palm Pre? Want a software keyboard? Got 10 minutes? Then you're in luck! Alan Rodriguez has posted a (relatively) simple how-to video, detailing how to install emoney_33's sharp-looking virtual keyboard on webOS, which is activated by a simple double-tap on the gesture area. The only caveat is that this process does require some rooting action and its a good idea to take in some of the keyboard documentation before blazing ahead.

You can catch a video of it in action after the jump. (Jump to 6m15s for a demo of the virtual keys) Although not demonstrated in the video, it also works just fine in landscape mode as well.

Meet My Pre, Episode II: Attack of the Nail Salon

meet my palm pre Bell's series of "man on the street" Palm Pre vox pops continues today, with the release of episode 2 of "Meet My Pre". Bradley (does he have a last name, or is he like Cher?) totes the Pre along to a Canadian nail salon and does his damndest to impress the girls. Two seem impressed, but facial lady? Not quite.

You can keep up with the series at Bell's "Meet My Pre" Facebook page. Embed after the break.

Max OS X 10.6 Dropping Palm Hotsync Conduit

hotsync iconQuoting "sources familiar with the latest Gold Master build", AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has dropped the Palm OS HotSync conduit from Snow Leopard, the latest iteration of Mac OS X. The news is not entirely surpising: Palm have not updated the Mac version of Palm Desktop for many years now, and with the company having moved on to greener pastures with webOS it no longer makes sense for Apple to continue expending resources on maintaining the feature.

Snow Leopard upgraders still hankering for Palm OS support can still turn to third-party software to get their sync on, such as The Missing Sync from Mark/Space.

Synergy's Next Stop: AOL Mail?

Oh Twitter, how we love your bite-sized information updates, that then require us reporters to come up with some extra padding to fill out a news item. (One sentence down!) So: good news for AOL Mail users! Precentral broke the news yesterday that AOL "desperately" want in on webOS's sweet Synergy action. In order to differentiate ourselves from our hombrew-dealin' brothers, we'll post a different tweet that says exactly the same thing:
