Bell Canada Debuts Palm Pre Ad Campaign

pre ads Bell Canada is bringing the Pre to North North America next week and has begun disseminating a couple of advertisements. The first 30 second clip bears a familiar format to a certain other company from the valley. We hope that Tamara Hope never sees Bell's Palm Pre ads, because watching this disembodied hand juggling all those apps might just freak her out with deja vu`... Of note is the Google Maps demonstration, which shows off landscape rotation aspect that doesn't actually exist yet. "Creative" marketing or upcoming feature? Catch the full clip after the break.

Bell has also created a more novel approach to introducing consumers to the device with its "Shake hands with the Palm Pre" video campaign. It is a nice alternative to the creepy, max headroom channeling ads that Sunnyvale has been backing to date. Episode 1 of this approach finds a enthusiastic spokesperson showing off the Pre and explaining its features in understandable terms to regular Canucks on the street.

Colligan Reportedly Rebuffed Apple Employee Offer

colligan palm logo orb As the U.S. Justice Department probes potentially illegal collusion between tech companies with regards to recruiting practices, Bloomberg is reporting a particularly juicy piece of gossip: apparently, former Palm CEO Ed Colligan rebuffed an offer from Apple head honcho Steve Jobs back in August 2007 for the two companies to stop "poaching" each other's employees.

According to the report, Jobs first became concerned over the practice when Jon Rubinstein was brought on board the then-sinking Palm mothership:

"Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, told Colligan he was concerned that Rubinstein was recruiting Apple employees. "We must do whatever we can to stop this," Jobs said in the communications. "

Rumor Suggests Palm Eos Still on Track

A few days after an bearish analyst predicted a delay for the rumored Palm Eos, a speculative report has been published that suggests the unannounced device will indeed arrive later this year. Digitimes, citing a Chinese-language newspaper, is reporting that volume shipments of the entry-level Palm Eos smartphone will begin in October 2009.

Monthly orders for the Eos, which features a 2.6-inch multi-touch display and supports GSM/HSPA initially, will reach 400,000-500,000 units, which will help drive up Compal's revenues starting in the fourth quarter, the paper said, adding Compal will also begin to ship a CDMA EV-DO version of the Eos to Palm in the first quarter of 2010.

The current build only works with Windows XP at this time and not Vista and there are a number of known issues to contend with.

The Missing Sync for Palm Pre beta is available now and is free during the pre-release period. The software is also available for Mac users.

Two New Games Added to the App Catalog

webos palm pre games Palm has recently added two new leisure games to the Palm Pre's webOS App Catalog. The first is a lights out style of game called Blackout from Uberu. It is a free download.

Analyst Predicts Palm Eos Delay

palm eos pixie Morgan Joseph analyst Ilya Grozovsky has issued a new report that claims the long rumored Palm Eos/Pixie model may not be released this year as had been previously expected. This is the same analyst who just last week drafted a report on declining Pre sales at Sprint. The AllThingsD Digial Daily blog reprints some of the comments from the note with additional commentary:

"We think that the Pixie, which we believe is being geared for AT&T (T) and has a different form factor than the Pre, is not likely to be available for the 2009 holiday season, [...] We do not have significant unit assumptions for this product given the continued success of the iPhone at AT&T."

Echo Syncs Palm Desktop with webOS

echo palm desktop pre webos Chapura has released Echo for Palm Desktop for webOS and the Palm Pre. Echo is designed to bring two way synchronization between the Palm Desktop Date Book and Address Book with the Pre's Calendar and Contacts applications. The software currently works with a Windows based PC component and the Echo application on the Pre. The software links up with the host machine wirelessly via WiFi. It works with Palm Desktop 6.2.2 and above. Chapura promises a free update at some point which will add the ability to sync Tasks and Notes.

The application is now listed in the Palm App Catalog. The PC component is available from Chapura and costs $29.95.

Signs of a North American GSM Pre?

PreCentral.net has uncovered some evidence of a GSM Palm Pre presumably designed for use on North American GSM networks. A couple of WiFi and Bluetooth certification sources are showing new Palm SKU codes that hint at Pre's tailored for the different GSM/UMTS frequencies that are used in Europe and North America.

First up, you can check this PDF to see that a new version of the Pre has been certified by Wi-Fi.org. That's where the hunt begins, as the unit certified here is P100UNA - Calvin notes that this matches up with the Treo Pro GSM version, T850UNA - the U is for UMTS, the NA is for North America. In other words, there's a version of the Palm Pre GSM that Palm is at least getting certified for US use (a strong indication it will support US 3G).

Not enough? How about this Bluetooth Gadget Guide listing with the P100UNA and P100UEU (that'd be UMTS-European Union) entries? That could indicate that there will be separate version, but remember that there's a UNA and UEU version of the Treo Pro as well, add in Palm's limited resources and we're expecting one model for both regions. Note also the P100UEU was seen on that Pre Spy Shot in Vietnam.

Getting Started with Palm Pre Homebrew Apps

Pre Homebrew apps howto Installing and finding unofficial "homebrew" apps for Palm webOS has recently gotten much easier thanks to new software and guides. The developer Jason Robitaille has posted a thread containing instructions on how to get setup. Depending on your system you may need to download additional files or change some settings before everything connects. Read on for the rest of our guide and recommendations.

Analysts Cite Slumping Pre Sales

Palm has received a couple of analyst downgrades today. In new client research reports, two market analysts are getting bearish on Palm citing slumping sales of the Palm Pre and even possible production cuts.

Via Tech Trader Daily, Morgan Joseph analyst Ilya Grozovsky writes in a research note that his checks find Pre sales in July were down to about 100,000 units, from 200,000 in June - and that August is tracking to be even lower than July. He cut his estimate on Pre untis for the August quarter to 350,000 from 400,000, which already was low relative to Street expectations. He also contends that non-Pre shipments in the quarter were lower than expected due to cannibalization by the Pre.
