Comments on: Updated Garnet VM for Nokia N900

Access has quietly released a new version of their Palm OS Garnet Virtual Machine for maemo powered Nokia devices. Now up to version 6, Garnet VM Beta 6 1.05b (as it's formally titled) brings official support for Nokia's N900 smartphone. PIC had previously reported on an unofficial workaround back in December. Thankfully, compatibility with the older Nokia N-series devices has been maintained, so owners of the N810, N800 and N770 Internet tablets who happen to use Palm OS are still in luck.

Access' release notes are scant, but the new version is still a beta and dated May 27th, 2010, and lists only "stability improvements" in the changelog, much like the previous release of the Garnet VM that occurred in December 2009.

Here's a review of the Nokia N900 by Judie of Gear Diary. Seems like pretty good hardware. A little pricey just to see how it works with the Palm emulator. If anyone has one of these Nokias how about letting us know how it works, in your opinion. Read here...http://www.geardiary.com/2010/01/30/diving-into-the-nokia-n900/ I'm sorta liking the Pre now that I have it working. I am in a world of my own. Haven't seen one that someone was using yet but I did see several Droids here in rural PA. BTW I already know about the N700 but am interested in other opinions.

I live in Hong Kong where Nokia is extremely popular but I haven't seen many N900s in the wild largely because, IMO, the iPhone is free with a $45/month 2 year plan. The N900 users on the various blogs have been highly complimentary of the hardware. Nokia doesn't suck up to the US carriers so the high end stuff (N series) doesn't make it Stateside unfortunately. The upcoming N8 will be killer from the prelim reviews I have seen. No, I am not a Nokia fanboy (use a Centro).

No, the LifeDrive only needed to basically be a Palm TX but with a gig or two of internal flash memory alongside an SD slot.

It's really a shame that Nokia's US presence is so dismal, with their CDMA offferings being practically non-existant. Right now I'm trying to decide between the Moto Droid 2 & Droid X on Verizon or joining Gekko for an Evo on Sprint. I'm always very curious to see more details on the Samsung Galaxy S, as a keyboard + 4" Super OLED screen looks like a terrific combination. I will of course keep my trust Centro & 755p & TX around for the forseeable future, just not as "daily drivers".

hkklife: forget CDMA as the future (and present globally) is GSM. You can get any phone you want unlocked from the likes of expansys.com.hk. Or better yet, take a vacation in Hong Kong and go wild trying everything available. Makes the US market selection seem pretty limited by comparison. Aside from Nokia, all the HTC models are available (except the Evo as 4G does not compute out here). HTC Desire, Wildfire and Samsung Galaxy are all available. Plus they are all unlocked. It's worth a flight over for sure....

ET: Hong Kong has a neat stored value card system that works on all forms of public transport and at many restaurants like McD and Starbucks. It's call "Octopus" and it originally started for many forms of public transit (bus, ferries, train, light rail, minibuses). You can also get wrist watches that are loadable (seems a bit archaic to me) and there is talk about using mobile phones as is done in Japan for everyday purchases. A phone feature with stored value looks like the best option if the major players can agree on a standard. The Octopus system can also be linked to a debit/credit card for auto refills.

Absolutely phenomenal. And just last week, I ate at a restaurant here that only accepts cash. No credit/debit cards of any sort, much less using a refillable value card or mobile device! There is, however, a hand-printed sign next to the cash register directing people to the ATM down the street! Such establishments are actually still quite common in this part of the world.

I've seen, IIRC, 3 Pre in the wild since june of last year. And one of those was in the process of being returned to Best Buy Mobile so that barely counts. Yet within <2 months since its launch, I probably saw 2x that number of Motorola Droids and have already seen at least that many iPads. For the most part, however, it's pretty much just iPhones and BBs on a daily basis.
