Quickies: m505 and GlowHack, OmniSky, Pocket Quicken 2.0, BackupBuddyVFS

Palm is developing an application that performs the same function as GlowHack, which allows the user to have the sidelight of the m505 always on. When asked about GlowHack, Christian Click, Executive Customer Relations Manager at Palm, said, "Although this is not Palm official software and not supported by Palm, we are working fast to come up with our own." -Dennis

OmniSky is currently looking into supporting the m500 series. Stacey Stokes, Senior PR Specialist for the company, said, "We expect to support the Palm m500 line, but to ensure the best possible user experience for Palm users we are undertaking extensive quality assurance testing on the combined [OmniSky, Minstrel modem, m500] solution. We anticipate making an announcement regarding our support this summer." -Ed

Pocket Quicken 2.0 is almost here and will bring with it over 100 new features and enhancements to help users manage finances while on-the-go. A visual tour of this new version is available now. -David Porfido

Blue Nomad, LLC has announced the release of BackupBuddyVFS 1.01. The new version performs much faster backup and restore operations. BackupBuddyVFS:Free has be updated as well. -Tamara Hinds

I hope this isn't another fraud...

mikecane @ 5/18/2001 8:19:59 AM #
There have been so many hoaxes on the Net regarding the m505's screen, could the first item above be yet another one? If Palm itself is going to release something like that, why wouldn't they support it? In fact, they should have bought the rights to Hackmaster years ago and incorporated it into the OS. Some day, someone will right a book about failed golden opportunities and corporate mismanagement -- and use Palm as the sole, "shining" example. (Perhaps Sony should buy Palm after all -- if only to save Palm from itself!)

Ah, early morning inattention -- "right" should be "write" in my above post. (Ryan & Ed, allow us to preview and edit posts!)

I was trying to use a quote that isn't phrased very well but I didn't want to just run the entire long e-mail. To paraphrase, Dennis asked Palm to improve the m505's screen and they suggested he try GlowHack, which they don't support. They are writing a version of their own, which I'm sure they will support.

BTW, I know Dennis pretty well. I'm certain this isn't a hoax.

I'd actually like to see a dimmer on the m505. I've gotten into reading ebooks before going to sleep. The glow from the screen is quite bright in the dark.

As far as I know, 3.5 doesn't support hacks without hack master, but when I got my new m505
I went through the list of stuff in ROM with Filez. There's something called "Expansion Mgr" which
I'm pretty sure wasn't there on my old IIIx running OS 3.3. Maybe that has something to do with
hacks. I don't know. My guess is it is something to do with the SD slot or universal connector.

Does anyone know what that is or what these other interesting files are? :

I don't know, but I'll take some guesses.

>Clipper

The clip board app, perhaps?

>BigHal Dave? Can you hear me Dave?

Hardware Abstraction Layer, probably. If it's anything like NT's, it's basically just a hardware manager that makes sure apps don't screw with the HW in the wrong way.

>FATFS

FAT File System support for the SD cards, probably.

>Graffiti Extension-I think this might have something >to do with being able to use graffiti and keyboard at >the same time.

>SomeDB_enUs

No idea, but the last is probably whatever the US English language support is in.

Too damn expensive.

kupson @ 5/18/2001 9:35:04 AM #
Where does LandWare get of charging $40 for Pocket Quicken 1? Does anybody want palm apps that cost more than desktop apps? Hell, the full version of Quicken costs from $15 - 50, depending on flavor and promotions... why would anybody shell out $40 for an add on?

Whew, I feel better. Sorry to spew. Maybe, when I don't buy PQ2 just like I didn't buy PQ1, landware will catch a clue. (Yeah, right.)

Consequences of always on backlight?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/18/2001 10:07:10 AM #
Since Palm obvioulsy iddn't desing the M5XX series to always have the backlight on I wonder what the consequences are of doing that other than battery life.

RE: Consequences of always on backlight?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/18/2001 10:45:18 AM #
yeah.. I am kind of concern too.. will that shorten my palm's life. I am so afraid that I might burned my screen soon since I have the light on all the time.

RE: always on backlight?
Cheetah @ 5/18/2001 11:01:28 AM #
I think it's a good thing that Palm is creating an "enhancement" to have the backlight default to on, as several people would opt to go that way.

BUT, what people really want is a contrast control so that they could view the screen more clearly WITHOUT having to resort to battery-burning backlight.

I still think that no contrast control on the Palm 505 is it's biggest shortcoming. Doesn't every Palm before it have a contrast control (either hardware or software)???

RE: Consequences of always on backlight?
mikecane @ 5/18/2001 11:40:55 AM #
What about the IIIc and Prism? I thought their contrast controls only decrease/increase the brightness of the backlight. Is that so?

RE: Consequences of always on backlight?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/18/2001 2:32:14 PM #
You can't control the "contrast"... this screen technology just adjusts how much light is reflected back into your eyes. That is the only way to adjust how good the screen looks. This is how the iPaq does it and this is how the Palm must do it.

RE: Consequences of always on backlight?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/19/2001 11:34:58 AM #
Contrast won't help the M505 seem brighter. The only thing that would help would be to adjust the brightness level of the sidelight, which I don't think is possible. The Prism has 2 control options: the brightness control (which determines how bright the backlight is) and the hidden contrast control (which is only good in correcting the shimmering problem that some Prism's had). So my suggestion is to get used to the screen, 'cause it isn't going to change. On a side note, the battery life in my Prism (which has the brightness turned about 3/4 up) is WAY better than in my M505 (with the sidelight always on). Even when running Soundsgood. Does the sidelight suck up that much juice?

READ

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/18/2001 11:03:09 PM #
It amazes me how many people read what they want to read, instead of actually reading what is written before commenting. i.e. Palm not supporting something they will be developing themselves.

Re: Read

altema@ameritech.net @ 5/19/2001 11:38:43 AM #
That's right, we should read things more carefully. The comment about non-support is in reference to Glowhack, a third party software hack which is the responsibility of the third party. This is why Palm is developing their own utility which they WILL support..

Quicken Transactions

Jonathan Verlin @ 5/19/2001 5:29:44 PM #
I think that the desktop version of Quicken is great! I tried an earlier version of Pocket Quicken but couldn't do split transactions. Does version 2.0 have this capeability?
RE: Quicken Transactions
Logan @ 5/20/2001 2:51:33 PM #
All versions of Pocket Quicken allow you to enter a split transaction.

V 2.0 now supports spilt transfers, debits, memos and autofill within the split editor. A screen dump at www.landware.com illustrates this.

I paid the $40 for Quicken 1. It is a waste of money. I hope I get the update free because I would like to get somehing for my money.

You are getting nothing if you did not buy after May 15, 2001. What a rip off!! PocketMoney by catamount is the best. I bought it for $20 at Staples and got MPG as a bonus.

Glow Hack is a fraud

Lord Iolite @ 5/20/2001 12:47:28 PM #
according to recent articles in both Yahoo and Maximum PC, glow hack and it's clones do nothing... or do they? Maybe Spyware or a virii set to go off at a later date......hmmm
RE: Glow Hack is a fraud
Ed @ 5/20/2001 4:26:07 PM #
GlowHack is an application that has been around since at least 1997 and is used every day by many thousands of Palm users to automatically turn the back/sidelights of their Palms on after some given time of the day. If anyone told you it was a hoax they were deeply mistaken.

RE: Glow Hack is a fraud
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/20/2001 4:44:42 PM #
I am not sure what articles you read exactly, but I think you might be a little confused. GlowHack's purpose is to automatically turn on the backlight upon powerup. It performs this function properly (I use it on my m505). What IS a fraud was the so-called "contrast hack" for Hungarian-made 505's, and its fraudulent offspring Bright505 (which was just glowhack in disguise), and whatever other spin-offs to this whole hoax there have been. Feel comfortable using GlowHack; it doesn't improve brightness or contrast, but does save the trouble of turning on your backlight all the time (all the time=how often you probably need the backlight to see your m505 screen, sheesh).

Happy Palming!

Poor color, no contrast ?

Ashamed @ 5/20/2001 9:26:49 PM #
A friend of mine just shipped to me a very hard to get m505, which I am eagerly awaiting. Very happily going for my 4th Palm device, WHAT on earth is all this reading of stories about "no contrast" and"juice-suicking always on backlight", and "poor color" ? Can any other Palm freak out there give me some support ? If these stories are true, Dear Palm, you had better send us some software repair through some download at absolutely no charge, and soon ! What a nightmare !

Uhhh.... What do you want to hear? Do you even have a m505 yet? I really don't understand what you're trying to say.

screen qlty

premster @ 5/21/2001 8:09:50 PM #
I have read 505 reviews which complain bitterly about how poor the dispay qlty is. Is this so, & is this the reason why glowhack has become such an issue ?
