What kind of PDA would God buy?

chasvs @ 1/21/2003 12:47:31 PM #
I guess he wouldn't need one if he knows all and sees all and has already made the plan for eternity!

It would be interesting to see his to do list:

1 - Separate light and dark.
2 - Make Earth.
3 - Sort out the sea.
...
10 - Arse everything up.

It's nice to see another beta release of Avantgo

asiayeah @ 1/21/2003 12:55:19 PM #
It's nice to see that the Avantgo client for OS 5 is still being worked on, especially after the news of Sybase.

It improves a little bit of finally fixing the tiny font issues. But then some really big issues still remains, such as high-resolution images support, Tungsten T's D-pad support, Chinese OS support...etc

Hey, use plucker!!!
bartsimp @ 1/21/2003 1:33:11 PM #
Sorry but I really don't understand why people are still interested in Avantgo:
- it's limited in what it can convert : only web pages
- it's slow
- its support for hires and OS 5 is a pitty compared to plucker (and reminder, plucker is open source)
- avantgo is trying to prevent all content providers to go elsewhere for mobile content,

no, frankly, use plucker, it's made for users!!!

This 5.2 build 8 AvantGo beta does OK with the Tungsten T 5-way navigator. It is used for scrolling the page until you hit select, and then it goes into link selection mode. Hitting select on a link changes to that page. My only issue with it is that the 5-way can't be used to move back to previous pages, and there doesn't seem to be a way to exit "link select" mode without actually selecting a link. I hope these are ironed out before the final 5.x release.

Plucker
Splezunk @ 1/21/2003 6:35:28 PM #
Can Plucker download at the time of hotsyncing? This to me is the reason I use Avantgo and not iSilo. Also are you able to refresh content via GPRS?

Thanks

I've found that one can exit the link selection mode, by using a stylus to click on any empty space of the document. But then it requires a stylus...

What's wrong with using a finger instead of a stylus:-)

Aside from the smudges, that is...I wonder if they could work up some sort of double-click for the d-pad button to switch between link navigate and scroll mode?

Plucker and OS5
rlauzon @ 1/23/2003 7:28:33 AM #
Um... Plucker doesn't work with OS5. The current 1.2 version blows up pretty bad. They have a highres version in beta, but it doesn't work very well yet either.

Yes I know Plucker is free. But if you are willing to spend a few bucks, I'd definitely go for iSilo. Supports the latest PDA devices, its fast, and you can find several great online communities (one is at www.turcic.com/forums).

Ok, it doesn't support wireless web content updating (yet), but beside that, it fully replaces Avantgo.

Dom Perignon contest video

VisorMiser @ 1/21/2003 1:18:56 PM #
Impressive! The online video from the first Dom Perignon Text-Entry Speed Contest actually shows the winners from 2000, not the third contest that recently finished. Hard to believe that this year's winner was even faster.

Mac OS X Support?

elo @ 1/21/2003 8:14:51 PM #
Without real cross-platform support that includes the Mac, it's pretty hard to take AvantGo seriously.

RE: Mac OS X Support?
DarkKnicht @ 1/29/2003 1:47:53 PM #
They can't spend time on OS X versions of their software becase that I would make people wonder why they don't support a Unix version. And if you have a working Unix version that is supported, you have to make a Linux version. And who knows where that would lead us too? The world might end if the consumer has choice.

Besides, who in their right mind would want a working OS AND a working PDA?!?
