Opera Mini Browser v4.1 Released

Opera Mini PalmOpera Software has released the official version of its Opera Mini web browser v4.1 after being in beta for the past couple of weeks. This release includes several new features, including automatic completion of web addresses, tools for attaching files to web-based email, support for file and photo uploads, text search within pages, downloading attachments from email for storage on your phone, and saving and viewing pages offline. Opera also says this version is up to 50% faster than previous versions due to improvements in its back-end proxy.

Users can download the latest version by visiting operamini.com on your phone. In order to use Opera Mini with a Palm OS device you need to have the Palm Java Micro Environment installed. Since Palm no longer distributes the JVM you need to already have it installed or find an alternate source (download link) for it online. Also see our recent article on Palm OS web browsing for the optimal Java settings for Opera Mini on Palm OS.

No Centro

No listing for the Centro. I would guess the Treo 680 one should work.

Does not load?

dbridges @ 5/13/2008 6:36:14 PM # Q
I downloaded the new .jad and have followed the tips for optimizing the IBM JVM. The load bar gets to ~80% and never finishes loading. I've let it sit for 3 minutes but no luck. Any problems or tweaks to get this version running? I've had previous versions running in the past.

Image Problems?

Ryan @ 5/13/2008 6:46:39 PM # Q
A lot of Palm OS users are reporting problems with images in the Opera forums, is anyone here having better luck?

As I posted in the next thread, surfing with 'images off' gives me what I expect. However switching images on, I get problems reported on the opera forum. Mind you, if I'm viewing a page with images off and I tap and hold and select 'load images' from the shortcut menu, all images, links and text boxes are as they should be. This is how I normally surf on my Palm so it's fine for me (BTW unlockedTreo680 1.04)

On 755p & 680 does not work:
On 680 tapping on "Menu" - RESET
On 755 - returns to the "Home" screen.

@justuser:

1. Can you use the "menu"?
2. Which ROM version do you use?

I've downgraded my ROM back to 1.04. I can use the menu. I normally surf with images off on my mobile (GPRS too slow). With images off, text boxes etc are all as the should be. With images on, text boxes are invisibel but still active if you know where they are (and graphics don't load anyway most of the time).

Yes I have noticed that this version loads way less images. I was using 4.1 beta for a month now and it loaded more images and if I set java memory at 4mb I would get more images but it would become unstable. So at 1mb this new version just loads very small images not the big one like before (yes I also tried it at 4mb and no difference with this version, they most be controlling it at the server side). Shame this happens, it does make the page load much faster and maybe it maybe more stable for most people. For me its the same, it was good before. But I do a butch of tricks to make it stable. I use it every night and I get a crash with it 3 and 3 days. Last night to fill up my history so I don't have to go to my online bookmarks everytime I load it up (I use www.phonefavs.com), I visited about 20 sites and no crash but thats when I noticed that less images were coming in and less bytes were being loaded.

700p works fine

lancepr @ 5/14/2008 9:18:23 AM # Q
I am also able to run this version from my SD card.
I did have to delete the previous version to get it to work.

EULA means nothing to PIC?

PhrkOnLsh @ 5/16/2008 12:15:32 PM # Q
So when did PIC descend to linking to illegally redistributed files? I have links to a windows XP installer ISO, can I post it? How about a dump of my T|X's ROM?

I would assume they include a link as a service to users who can't find it online since Palm stopped offering it. I'm not sure I see the harm there.
