Symbol Reports Record Revenue and Income
Symbol Technologies, the frequently forgotten Palm licensee, reported record revenue and net income for its most recent quarter. Revenue was $373.2 million, 27.4% higher than in the same quarter last year, while net income for the quarter was $40.5 million, or $0.28 diluted earnings per share, 31.5% higher.
Symbol makes Palm handhelds intended for commercial use in factories, warehouses, hospitals, and more. Their offerings include the SPT 1500, essentially a III series that a scanner can be attached to, and the SPT 1700, which has a rugged housing that will withstand drops of up to 4ft/1.2m to concrete and is sealed to IP54 standards for protection against windblown rain and dust. It offers integrated bar code scanning and wireless LAN capability. Naturally, these aren't cheap. The 1700 starts at $1,055 and goes up to $2,165, depend on the configuration.
Some 10 million Symbol bar-code scanners, mobile computers and wireless LANs are utilized worldwide.
