Palm Demos OS 4

Palm chief technology officer Bill Maggs showed a demonstration of Palm OS 4 to developers at PalmSource 2000 today. The OS supports 16-bit color, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, USB connections for syncing to PCs, and support for wireless telephony.

The company is making progress on porting the Palm OS to ARM-based processors. Maggs showed a development circuit board that had some Palm applications running on an ARM-based chip.

Palm CEO Carl Yankowski even talked a bit about OS 5, which will support higher screen resolutions while maintaining compatibility with today's Palms, though he didn't reveal anything about when it might be released.

I'm a registered PalmInfoCenter user, but I can't find the instructions on how to submit a news story. Can someone please tell me how? Thanks

The link to submit news is in the lefthand column under Main Menu. It is labeled "Contribute".

As for how I get the news up first, I've had a lot of practice at nosing out Palm-related news. I'm dedicated to making this site the very best it can be and getting stories out as quickly as possible is part of that. Keep checking back and I'll do all I can to keep you informed on the Palm Community.

There was a lot of talk about OS 4.0 increasing the amount of accessible on board memory. Is this still true when they previewed the OS? How big will it be 16MB, 32? Will it also be compatible with SD?

i think i read somewhere that there wont be a problem with the current palms upgrading to OS4. any Palm OS device with flashable ROM can do the upgrade. sorry visor!

If they charged $20 (US) for v3.3 >> v3.5 upgrade, are we going to be able to afford it? I heard MS is at PalmSource looking for programmers. My other question is: Is Palm at MS looking for ideas to inflate OS upgrades? I think we'll be encouraged to purchase a new Palm just to get all the 'gee whiz' features. They will make the cost so high as to be cost-prohibitive to upgrade.

Where can I download Palm Demo OS4 from internet? If somebody knows, please kindly tell me. After reading the reports, I'm realy interested to try this version 4.0.

Hey retard, my old Palm did not have flash memory and I was able to upgrade the OS. Handspring has already issued OS upgrades (for free) which I have installed. Even with the batteries completly dying and losing every bit of information in my unit I still had the upgrade when fresh batteries were put back in.

I thought I saw it in the developer area on the Palm OS site but I just went back to look for it and couldn't find it again. If anyone runs across it, could you post a link? Thanks.

BTW, Palm CEO Carl Yankowski said OS 4 will ship this spring, to be followed by a Bluetooth-related upgrade in the summer.

Is there a running summary of the sessions and announcements at Palm Source anywhere? Other platforms' developers conferences often have up-to-date postings throughout the week, and video tapes or MPEG/QuickTime files available to developers. Often the keynote is available over the web.

The PalmSource.com site seems to be barren of such information (and it looks like it hasn't been touched for the last month or so).

Software Upgrade ?

Sounds like OS4 will encompass a substancial hardware upgrade. I wonder if Palm will go the MS route and claim you just can't upgrade the software but need to buy the new Palm to get the new software?
