Rumor: m500 Appears on Palm Site

Click for Original Image Palm made a slight slip today and put a graphic on its site that had a picture of a device that bears a strong resemblance to the picture of the m505 that was seen earlier. The image has since been removed but a copy appears at right. The image that was leaked earlier appears here for comparison.

This certainly seems to be a strong hint that Palm is readying its website for the release of the new device.

Thanks to everyone who mailed us a copy of this image. -Ed

Release of the M505

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/15/2001 10:52:24 PM #
I spoke with someone who indicated that Palm would probably start taking orders after MN on Sunday. The person said it was going to be released on the 19th. This person said also that the stores would have them before they did. I guess we will have to wait and see!
I will order mine after MN and cover my bases at the local computer stores!

Please forgive my ignorance, but MN? What is MN?

I'm not sure I understand, will the 505's be available to purchase in stores on the 19th? If not, what is the expected time for them to hit the shelves?

Well, Palm Vice CEO, Mr. Mike Weatherley, is said to "unveil" new Palm devices at his keynote speech on the IOL Israel Palm convention at May 26th, so my guess is either an M505, or some other SD equipped Palm OS 4 PDA.

dunno....

sure i strongly beleive that the m505 willl be released on monday....but this pic just look like a plain old vx to me.

If you look at it, the toggle, center button is different than the Vx.

Also, note the top-left visible icon - that's the clock icon we saw in the leaked m505 picture, an icon that was never included with a V-series machine.

New 500 series

Yes, the new pics do look a lot like the current Vx but then it is hard to improve upon the look of the current model anyway. I think the big improvements are going to be inside with even smaller electronics and improved functionality all around. Silver buttons would improve the exterior appearance a little bit as well. I was impressed with the first photo to appear but in a way, I hope the design (at least the bottom) stays the same so that my peripherals use for my Vx will continue to work with the new one. Alas, marketing will probably ensure that all new side items must be purchased as well.

I hardly think it is an error...

believe me this is not an error, this picture IS the M505. and the picture that was first shown of the M505 is in the press kit palm si giving to the journalist...

1 step up and two steps . . . .

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/16/2001 9:51:46 AM #
After seeing the pics of the new Sony, this looks so lame. I love the simplicity of Palm as much as anyone, but even with this 505, its just a tiny step from the trusty Professional I had 4 years ago.

And, It's a joke that Palm, Sony and Handspring all have different expansion ports . . . .

RE: 1 step up and two steps . . . .
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/16/2001 2:20:25 PM #
handspring, sony, and palm are competitors, hence the different expansion strategies.

Interesting...

Why would Palm release detail about this Device on Monday and not release the device at the same time, or release the details in April/May?

The only idea in my mind is that Palm wants to attract people to buy the 505 instead of buying Prisms and Clies. I'm not sure if it's right or not, but we'll see.

I really hope it'll be released on Monday. I was really looking forward for this weekend to end...
