PDF To Go and DataViz Mail Introduced (Updated)

DataViz has released an Add-On Kit for Documents To Go Pro. PDF To Go allows users to view text and tables in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files and DataViz Mail lets users receive e-mail and attachments.

Update: This is a free upgrade for all registered users of Documents To Go 3.000 or higher. Those who have received Documents To Go Pro through a bundle offer can purchase the Add-on Kit for $20.

PDF files will show on the handheld as view only, similar to the way PDF files are viewed on the desktop. DataViz Mail acts as an e-mail conduit, allowing users to receive attachments to e-mails when synching mail. DataViz Mail works with Outlook, Outlook Express, and Lotus Notes and supports attachaments from Word and Excel, WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, and Lotus 1-2-3.

"When we asked our customers how we could continue to improve Documents To Go, PDF support and access to e-mail attachments were the most often requested features," said Scott Thomas, Palmtop Product Manager for DataViz. "As handhelds continue to evolve, we hope to further improve our products to meet our customers' changing needs."

Naturally, this Add-On Kit requires Documents To Go Pro, which costs $50 but is bundled on the new Palm m500 and m505.

There in no Macintosh version oif the e-mail conduit.

Nickel and Dime

One thing that I don't like is when some of these app developers nickel and dime you to death.

Actually, if you own a full version of Documents to Go, the PDF and email add-ons are free. Its only the m500/505 bundled version where you have to pay $20 to get the new functionality. I just upgraded my D2G 3.0 to the 3.04 version which comes with the add-on two days ago, and the PDF viewer works quite well.

Thanks, I missed that when I was putting the article together, don't ask me how. I've updated the article with the correct info.

Will the new add-in support (view) the images within the PDF file?

PDFs, as viewed by Documents on the Go, are just text. Graphics get omitted, and if there is a page with just graphics, it gets turned into a note saying that the page only contained graphics. Every page was like that when I tried converting some of the PalmSource 2000 slides.
