HandEra Releases OS Upgrade

HandEra has released an upgrade that will move all TRGpro devices to Palm OS 3.5.2. Among the most noticeable improvements is an approximate 10% speed increase in CompactFlash (CF) memory card operations. It contains drivers for several new CF devices, including Ethernet cards. It also has several other small enhancements and bug fixes. It is free but only works on HandEra/TRGpro handhelds.

HandEra has the best track record among the palm licensees for giving its customers free upgrades, having never charged for one. Some are still resentful of Palm Inc. or charging $20 for the upgrade to OS 3.5. HandSpring's devices can be patched but not upgraded and Sony has not yet offered an OS upgrade.

HandEra is releasing their upgrade in two forms. One method is to load the upgrade onto a CF memory card and perform it from there and the other is to run a desktop application that works through the HotSync cradle.

Using the CF version appears to be the only option for Macintosh users. The desktop app is for Windows only.

Future HandEra 330 owners don't need to worry about this upgrade; that device comes with OS 3.5.2 preinstalled.

what? you are an ignorant fool, you dont buy something from a company because you dont like its name? That pathetic...may god help you!

Names are very important. If you bought a home, it's developement had a name. The floor plan model had a name; your car has a name. Chevy didn't sell many Novas in Mexico because it means "no go" in Spanish. Palm won't sell a "6" series because in Japan, that'a a bad number... Unfortunatley, Marketing departments are paid very nicely, & the folks at were too arrogant. ..."Well let's see now, TGRPro. Hmm that sucks; how about 'handEra'? Yeah! Cool"
Bummer. They had an oportunity, and they blew it.

You don't really think that do you? While I agree that naming is important, the stories that you outlined are what adult marketing teachers teach their children to scare them at night. The Chevy Nova was introduced about 2 or 3 decades after Nova Gas was in the country, and they didn't seem to be hassled by the naming. Not to mention the pronunciation is different. As Snopes.com points out would you (an engligh speaker) not purchase a dinette set if it was said to be notable? Or would you think, "I'm not going to buy that it doesn't come with a table."

Did you know that Handera means "Rubbish PDA which doesn't innovate at all"? No, really - I guess the people at Handera really did mess up on that one.

Come on, be serious. You ought to be able to come with a better excuse for not buying a Handera (e.g. I prefer colour, I don't like the look, I'm allergic to anything above 160x160 screens) than simply not liking the name.

Obviously can't make the connection with the name:
Hand Era
A not too subtle play on words; and definitely no basis for running down a good unit. As many others have said before on these boards -- support you r own decision, but no reason to run down the choice of others solely to justify your choice of "what's best."

While I agree that the name leaves something to be desired, it seems to come from their view that now is the Era of the Handheld device or computer.

Their 330 model seems like the best of the Palm devices if you do not really need color.

HandEra Releases BUGGY OS Upgrade

@ 5/17/2001 12:54:57 PM #
According to several posts in the TRGPro Users Uroup (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TRGPro_Users_Group) over the past few days, the OS update has introduced several problems, including causing batteries to run out after 3 or 4 days (previously lasted 3 or 4 weeks) and causing the TRGPro to be turned on by the Up/Down buttons.

Stay far away from this update - it isn't ready for prime time.

Upgrade work on IIIx?

archituz @ 5/17/2001 4:01:08 PM #
Since the TRG Pro was cloned from the Palm IIIx (I upgraded my IIIx from 4meg to 8 with TGG's Xtra Xtra-- which was exclusively for the IIIx) there must be some way to use this new 3.5.2 upgrade on my IIIx. Anyone have any insights?

Insights? Yeah, plenty. You really ought to benefit from the 10% faster CF card access. And I bet you can't wait to get your hands on the drivers for the CF ethernet cards. Who cares about 'only works on TRGPro/Handera handhelds anyway?
Get a life, loser. Or buy a Handera - it amounts to the same thing.

Hey, buddy, go easy on the poor guy. What did he do to you anyway? All he asked for was a little advice. So what if the answer was blatantly obvious? He still deserves to be treated like a (slightly dense) human being.

Handera name sucks

Well I gotta admit too, that name is gay, but their TGRpros isn't that bad. At least they have speakers
