Survey Places Palm Well Behind RIM Among Enterprise Users

A new ChangeWave survey has been released indicating a groundswell in increased popularity among corporate customers for Research In Motion's BlackBerry platform. This gain for RIM comes at the expense of Palm's Treo smartphone line, which has plummeted to third place behind Apple and barely ahead of industry stalwarts Motorola and Samsung.

Of those surveyed, 73% claimed that a BlackBerry device was their company-issued smartphone of choice. Only 18% of the survey's respondents chimed in with Treo usage, dramatically down 10% from a year ago and down 5% since this past August.

New and Updated Palm OS Software

Garmin Discontinues All Remaining iQue Models

In case anyone has not had their fill of depressing Palm OS-related news this week, we have just received word that Garmin has officially discontinued their final two Palm OS-based handhelds with integrated GPS functionality. In actuality, Garmin's PDA line has been dying a long, protracted death for several years as the company shifted its focus to standalone GPS navigators and add-on mapping software partnered with a Bluetooth GPS receiver such as the Mobile 10, 20 and XT packages.

Garmin's iQue 3600a, the specialized aviation version of the original iQue 3600, has finally been put out to pasture, juding by the product's "discontinued" status on its web page.

Unlocked Centro Now Available in Hong Kong and Singapore

Unlocked Centro AsiaPalm is now offering an Unlocked GSM version of the Palm Centro in select asian countries. Palm's Hong Kong and Singapore websites now advertise the availability of a Glacier White Centro with a grey accented keypad.

Neither site is showing an official price or availability date. The "buy page" currently lists a directory of retailers. Crave is reporting that it will go on sale on March 6 in Singapore for S$598.

Higher Capacity Centro Battery Now Available

As we mentioned last month when covering the availability of additional OEM batteries by Palm for the new Centro smartphone, one of the major drawbacks of that device's smaller physical size is reduced battery capacity. While heavy-duty Centro users are doubtless still eagerly awaiting a higher-capacity OEM size battery from Seidio, a new 2000mAh battery has just surprisingly been released by Sprint.

Available at the Sprint-Nextel online accessory store, the 2000mAh Extended battery appears to be considerably thicker than the stock Centro battery. The battery nearly doubles the juice provided by the stock 1150mAh battery and, at the same $49.99 as the 1150mAh Palm replacement battery, looks to be a better value for heavy-duty Centro users who can live with the added bulk and weight as well as a black battery door. Unfortunately, the purchase price of the battery does not include a new replacement door, so an additional $7.99 must be factored into the equation.
