Verizon Treo 755p Release Imminent?

Rumor: Treo fans on the Verizon Wireless network that didn’t get their fill of playing the waiting game over the 700p Maintenance Release have occupied the summer months by awaiting the Treo 755p. While Palm’s newest CDMA Treo has been available to Sprint users since May, Verizon’s version is still a no-show despite frequent reports (confirmed by this author) that the 700p is suffering from scarce availability system-wide on Verizon.

In the latest posting on the Official Palm Blog, employee Colleen Werner has announced the first Treo Comedy Film Festival. The deal: create a short film - maximum length 60 seconds (not including credits) - and make it funny. That's funny as in "Ha ha", not funny as in "Volvo driver". There's a whole range of sweet prizes on offer, with the Best Of Festival winner taking away a $5,000 cash prize, a mobile filmmaking toolkit and travel & accommodations for the Los Angeles gala event on October 18th.

SplashID v4.03 Released

SplashID Palm SoftwareSplashData are really making up for not updating SplashID for a two-year period, as the past month has seen the release of the latest version 4.0 of the app along with several subsequent updates. The latest revision, v4.03, dated July 27th 2007, brings mostly bug fixes to the desktop component of the application.

A full list of the bugfixes, including fixes to keyboard shortcuts, password bugs, and auto-fill labels, can be found on the release notes page here. No updates to the Palm device’s executable of the program have been made in this version. Also note that the program’s desktop component is still Windows-based only; a Mac version of 4.x is in development and is promised for later this year.

SplashID v.4.03 is available now for $29.95. A free 30-day trial version is available for download. It supports most devices with Palm OS 4.0 or later and its desktop components are fully Windows Vista-compatible.

Medieval Heroes II Game Updated

Palm OS GameThe latest version of Arcona Magi’s long-running Palm OS turn-based strategy title, Medieval Heroes II, has just been released. Version 1.60 for Palm OS includes "gameplay improvements and a new highscore system" in addition to the usual minor bugfixes. A full rundown of the various revisions to the game can be found here. The release of version 1.60 marks the title’s first substantial update since April of 2006. In addition to the 1.60 Palm OS release, the Pocket PC version of the title is now up to 1.10 with the same list of improvements. A trial version of the game is available with full version registration costing $14.95.

Palm OS Java JVM Updated

Palm have quietly released an updated version of the Palm OS Java Micro Environment via their support page. This latest version 5.7.2 includes updated support for the Treos 680 & 755p as well as a few bug fixes.

Some testing on my Treo 680 shows that the Alt key issue has indeed been fixed - pressing it will now pop up a virtual keyboard & character map - and the hard buttons are working again. I didn't notice much difference stability-wise: both Opera Mini and Gmail seemed to play along nicely, but that was true of the previous version 5.7.1 as well. Unfortunately, there's still no copy-and-paste support, but it's nice to see that Palm haven't completely forgotten about Java.

AT&T Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6 ROM Leaked

The Internet has come through for impatient technophiles once again. In a forum post dated July 28th and entitled "Who wants the ATT WM6 ROM?!??!", XDA-developers forum member incognitho has provided a rapidshare link to a leaked image of the upcoming Windows Mobile 6 ROM for the AT&T-branded Treo 750.

Palm Stereo Headset Pro Review

Treo Headset reviewAside from the small square screens, my longest-standing complaint with Palm’s Treo line is the frustrating lack of an industry-standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack. While de rigeur on nearly all other types of portable consumer electronics released since the original Sony Walkman, the vast majority of mp3-playing feature phones and smartphones on the market still forego the popular 3.5mm design in favor of a 2.5mm jack, A2DP, or some sort of USB to headphone adapter.

Palm has at least made some attempt to mitigate this critical flaw in recent Windows Mobile-powered Treos by incorporating stereo A2DP connectivity (standard on Treo 750 and available via ROM update on Verizon’s 700w/wx and with the release of today’s featured product, the new Palm Stereo Headset Pro. The Palm 2-in-1 Stereo Headset Pro combines a pair of comfortable stereo ear buds with an integrated microphone module. Read on for the full review.
