According to a newly released study by SquareTrade, an independent aftermarket warranty provider for consumer electronics, the Apple iPhone is less than half as likely to fail as phones from Apple's two biggest competitors - BlackBerry and Palm.
The study, based on data from over 15,000 phones, finds that only 5.6% of iPhone users reported a device malfunction in the first year of ownership, compared with 11.9% of BlackBerry owners and a staggering 16.2% of Treo owners. The trend is projected to continue through the second year of ownership, with iPhone maintaining its status as the most reliable of the three.

Palm's latest smartphone offering, the unlocked GSM
Treo Pro, has been on the market several months and remains unavailable from any domestic carrier with subsidized pricing. According to a
recent analyst report, the chances of the handset being picked up by AT&T prior to the end of 2008 are becoming increasingly slim, so any prospective Treo Pro purchasers must hunt around for a deal on an unlocked handset. With the lack of domestic carrier participation and the
closure of all Palm retail stores, few opportunities even exist for customers in smaller markets to even see one of these devices in person for a hands-on demonstration.
So word of a $100 discount off the MSRP of an unlocked Treo Pro comes as pleasantly surprising news. Dell's Home e-store is running a coupon code promotion 27RR9ZSWHW?6BZ valid through November 19th, 2008 that takes $100 off the price of the Treo Pro. The customer's final price after the coupon discount is $449.99 alongside free shipping. Dell does charge sales tax in most states, however.

Despite the gloomy economic picture and the problems being experienced by some of the leading mobile handset vendors, global shipments of smart phones hit a new peak of just under 40 million units in Q3 2008, according to the latest estimates mobile analyst firm Canalys. This means smart phones now comprise around 13% of the total mobile phone market, up from 11% last quarter.
The introduction of the iPhone 3G in July and Apple's expansion into many more countries helped propel the vendor to second place globally, taking it above RIM in the quarter and resulting in higher shipments than for all the Microsoft-based smart phones combined. In total worldwide smartphone shipments hit a new peak of 39.9 million in Q3 2008.

Palm's only new holiday offerings, the
refreshed olive green and rose Sprint Centros
announced last month, are now available for purchase on
Sprint's and
Palm's online stores. In order to clear out existing stocks of the 64MB RAM Centros introduced last year, Sprint has lowered the price of these "old" models to a new low closeout price of $49.99 after $100 mail-in rebate and a 2-year contract. The original Centro is currently available in black, red, and pink colors.
In addition to a doubled 128mb of user-accessible memory, the new Centros are distinguished by several additional small upgrades: soft-touch exterior paint, and a slightly revised "gel" keyboard. In addition, the new Centros ship with the My Location feature standard in Google Maps as well as Palm's FaceBook app and the newest available ROM version 1.08. The new green and rose Centros are available now for $79.99 after the same $100 mail-in rebate and 2 year commitment.

A member of Palm's technical support staff has posted
some information to the Palm.com support forums with additional details on the newly-released
Verizon Centro 1.03 ROM update. The Palm tech support staffer "HardBeatZ" goes on to list the specific improvements made in the new Centro ROM as follows:
Specific enhancements:
The first is to add an error message when there is "no service" and a call is dropped if applicable.
Here is the technical explanation (Palm has added software support where if service is lost immediately after origination, modem disconnects the call with "no service" error which is not handled as an error. So no UI is displayed. This was fixed by adding in a handling code of "no service" call disconnect as an error.)
