Classic PalmOS Emulator Coming To Palm Pixi
As inevitably as the setting sun, MotionApps have posted some screenshots on Facebook of the official PalmOS emulator for webOS, Classic, running on the Palm Pixi. Notably, the virtual hard button onscreen interface has been totally revamped in order to better fit on the Pixi's smaller (320 x 400, vs 320 x 480 on the Pre) display. Rather than ape the vintage look of a PalmOS device, the Pixi version of Classic instead places the Home/Contacts/Calendar/Menu buttons into a webOS-style "capsule", with an option to swap them out for the 5-way navigator buttons.

RE: Palm OS Emulator
The first Pilots were released in March of 1996. I got one of the first batch that arrived at my local Egghead Software (R.I.P.)

A true shame Palm couldn't offer something to keep me onboard to last me through my 14th & 15th anniversaries with the company/platform.

"Nostalgia. It's delicate, but potent. Teddy told me that in Greek, nostalgia literally means the pain from an old wound. It's a twinge in your heart, far more powerful than memory alone. This device isn't a space ship, it's a time machine. It goes backwards, forwards. It takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It's not called a wheel, it's called a carousel. It lets us travel the way a child travels. Round and round, and back home again. To a place where we know we are loved." – Don Draper

Why not just have WebOS gestures handle the "App button" and directional buttons etc? Or as a translucent overlay so that the HVGA could be preserved. At least as a menu option.
Why not indeed?
For that matter why not an option for PalmOS apps to pop up from the launcher as new cards? Even if they are not being truly multi-tasked by Classic, it would make them appear more like real webOS apps and makes them easier to work with. And while we're at it, when the hell will I be able to copy and paste from Classic to webOS apps and vice versa?

RE: It's alive!
it wasn't too long ago that some here believed that the pda was NOT dead and that it made more sense to fight, juggle, and fumble with 2+ devices.

RE: It's alive!
1. ipod touch is a media player. NOT a pda ie PIM data.
2. iphone sales are cannibalizing ipod sales.
3. when iphone is on more carriers other than just that shitty at&t, #2 above will accelerate.

WM7
i posted here a while back that i tested the iphone and that the onscreen keyboard was just fine. if/when the iphone comes to Sprint, i'll probably get one. we'll see what Windows Mobile 7 offers too. i like Android, but the PIMs and the polish is not there - yet. palm and webos is not a contender unless they drastically increase product hardware build quality, fix software bugs, fix design flaws, and open the closed proprietary black box PIM data synergy silos they force you to use (ex. bastardized EAS). this is all doubtful. regardless, why would i want to invest in a new dying platform with a choice between a crappy cheap slider or a small screen - not to mention all of the bugs, shit quality, and proprietary BS?

ROBBIE BACH: So, I think the number one thing that we have to do on Windows Mobile going forward is about the experience people had with the phone itself. I don't think we have a business model problem, per se. I don't think we have some specific challenge outside of the fact that our experience is very skewed towards business users, and it's not as modern as it needs to be. And I'll just be as straightforward as that.
So, the challenge for us as we come into 2010 and we are going to have some new things that will talk about at Mobile World Congress, as we come into that, the first bar people should look at is to say, wow, are they doing a great job with the product. And when you look at the product, I'm sort of like, I have the luxury of having seen it, to be able to look at it and played with it a little bit, but I'm certainly confident people are going to see it as something that's differentiated and something that really does move the bar forward, not in an evolutionary way from where we are today, but it's something that feels, looks, acts and performs completely different.

RE: It's alive!
Yeah, I know. After eleventy years of abosco insisting he could use it just fine. You want bad on-screen keyboard, go try Android!
And rumor is WM7 is a clean wipe and incompatible with all WinMob apps currently in existence. Yeah, that'll work. Just call it the frikkin ZunePhone and make the FAIL complete.
RE: It's alive!
Con - you should really lighten up on the trite internet memes. i know you hipsters like to sound cool - but it's all really played out.
RE: It's alive!
Call me crazy, but I actually have something of a moderately high hope for WM7. Why? 2 reasons:
#1 I'm quite impressed by Windows 7. Not BLOWN away, but it mitigates the ho-hum Vista release (which was in itself overblown and overhyped by the media) and will finally put the creaky old XP out to pasture.
#2 The Zune HD. It's a lovely little device. I expected M$ to can the entire Zune division/initiative but this one really has been a pleasant surprise. Hopefully it is laying the groundwork for a completely reboot of WM7. I honestly think M$ could sorta do like Palm coulda done had they had deeper pockets and a mix of old/new management----support the legacy users for another year or two with WM 6.x devices & support, while starting anew with WM7 to go head to head with iPhone, WebOS & Android.
#3 Microsoft seems to have finally awakened and realized that they need to tie together the jumble of platforms & initiatives that are Windows, Windows Mobile, Windows Live, Xbox Live, Xbox 360+, Bing, and Zune. How? I have no idea. But at least they appear committed to it going forward. Killing off unecessary products & initiatives like Works & Encarta is a good start.
The MAIN thing M$ needs to avoid with WM going forward is the absolutely horrorshow of fragmenting the market. There are so many crazy-quilt configurations of WM hardware/OS builds/software releases that it became a huge headache trying to keep track of what supports what and what programs run on various OS versions. I forsee the exact same fate for Android. I've got apps on my Droid (primiarly games) that run WORSE now than they did 2 months ago. Not an encouraging sign for users to develop any long-term attachment to the platform.
Android is like a kid with his dad's credit card on a drunken rampage through Vegas--he knows he's gonna get cut off eventually but he doesn't know when it's going to occur so he's going to have as much fun as possible while it lasts. Right now, Android is at the 9pm stage. It's got a good buzz, friends are joining the party left and right but you're starting to see a lack of focus and a solid future roadmap.
At the end of the day, I think the tightly-controlled hardware/OS/marketplace ecosystems (Apple, Palm, RIM) SHOULD emerge victorious. But you can never, ever count out Google & M$ as they have the deep pockets to win a drawn-out grudge match.
RE: It's alive!
In case you weren't aware, Mobile-review's Eldar Murtazin is somewhat of a living legend around these parts. The Russian-borne phone guru manages to get his hands on an ample number of then-unreleased devices and juicy scoops -- but he's also been known to get things dead wrong from time, so keep that in mind. This time he might've just outdone himself with some apparent hands-on time with Windows Mobile 7. Here's what he's saying via Twitter: the OS has been built on scratch, and none of the old WinMo 6.x apps worked. There's "a lot of horizontal movements, a lot of additional info by clicks... for WM users it will be a great step ahead. For market it's a copycat of Android 3.1/3.2 [sic] or iPhone." No direct comparison to Zune HD, except to say that it's a simpler UI than what he was seeing here, and also no clue on the kernel underneath. Still, the lack of legacy compatibility is either a huge bummer to the fan base, or if not that then Microsoft is preparing for a two-platform WinMo world. Then again, this is a purported early build (and while we're at it, an unconfirmed hands-on), so who knows what's bound to change before the final release. There's a lot of other details if you're willing to check his feed, or just head over to WMPoweruser for the abridged / "good parts" version. Boy, February just can't come soon enough.

RE: It's alive!
I anticiate a gigantic fondling of the Verizon WebOS devices. I know of at least one colleague who is going to buy one next Mmonday as soon as they are available. Had Verizon had any version of the Pre out 3-6 months ago, they'd have gotten at least 6 or 7 sales from the people I immediately influence (myself included) but nearly everyone got tired of waiting and playing Palm & Sprint's silly little waiting games so they got a Droid, BB Tour or bought a new cheap VZW Centro.
Anyway, if I am absolutely blown away by the Pre Plus and I can justify the expenditure, I may buy one at full retail price (or look for a slightly used one a few months later) and sell the Droid. That's a HUGE "if" but it is a possibility. If not, then I'll tough it out for the forseeable future with this Droid and its crummy voice performance, circa 1999 e-mail app, and feeble PIMs. I would give a Verizon iPhone a serious look but I really prefer a physical keyboard and a removable battery. I'll never make the mistake of going BlackBerry again. And of course I'll give WM7 a serious look if/when it appears. I love the HTC HD2. If that thing came to VZW running Win 7 (or perhaps even Android) I'd probably be all over that. But past 12 months? No one can tell-at this rate things are moving so quickly we may sooner rather than later end up with full VOIP on 4G, as SV prognositcated the other day.
P.S. Now that I have given up on fumbling with 2 separate devices, I want one device with a huge, high-res screen. Anything less than 3.5" w/ 320x480 is unacceptable. 3.7"+ with at least 800x480+ is basically the wave of the future.

RE: It's alive!
1. what did you hate most about BB?
2. are you thinking pre or pixi? why?
3. what do you like best about this HTC HD2?
RE: It's alive!
On the BB STorm: in addition to the points above--poor touchscreen implementation & uncomfortable formfactor, frequent crashes/hangs/lags.
2. Pre Plus, most likely, *IF* I switch. Going down to 3.1" 320x480 is bad enough on the Pre. I cannot imagine dropping all the way down to the Pixi's small, pixel-neutered screen. Howerver, I like the solid candybar design and accessible keyboard of the Pixi. Still, the Pre's screen + extra processor/RAM power trumps keyboard & thiness. WebOS is still so laggy that it needs all the horsepower help it can get. I'd also buy a Seidio 1350mAh extended battery right off the bat.
3. 1Ghz Snapdragon CPU, 4.3" 480x800 LCD w/ capacative touch. And a row of thin but real hard buttons below the screen (not a silly space-wasting gesture area like WebOS devices or overly sensitive touch panel like the Droid. Just pure screen, baby!
The HD2 would be absolutely perfect if it ran WM7, WebOS or Android, had a slide-out keyboard & bigger battery, and was available on CDMA networks.
