Palm Vc Available in March 2001

The WebStandard has an interview (in German) with Markus Bregler, Chief of Palm Central Europe. Bregler confirmed that there will be a "Palm Vc" (however the name was not confirmed) presented at the Cebit (March 22-28, 2001). The device will also be available at this time. It will have color, SD-Card slot, and the new OS. Again it has not been confirmed that it will be called "Palm OS 4" but it will be a "major update" and include multimedia features.

Bregler also said that Palm did want to publish the OS 3.5 Update for free but the SEC wouldn't allow it because of the IPO.

Finally, some news on Linux support by Palm should be expected at the PalmSource in Santa Clara. For more details you should perhaps try your luck with Babelfish, the online translator.

Vc Battery Life?

Ed @ 11/9/2000 2:13:28 PM #
I'm really curious what kind of battery life the Vc is going to have. I was under the impression that one of the reasons why they couldn't make the IIIc fit into the III series case is that the Lithium Ion battery needed to make it last for a respectable time was too large. Did they have some kind of breakthrough or will the Vc only go a few hours before needing to be recharged?

I want to know whether they'll be sturdier as they are in V housing and they have not had any case cracking problems. I'm waiting for airborne to deliver IIIc number (since march) today. 4 cracked cases and 1 other problem

I also would demand a tougher body structure, free from the subtle flexing I've felt in the last *three* IIIc's.

That's right, I'm getting ready to ask for my *fourth* IIIc: #1 buttons quit after three weeks, #2 refused to HotSync, #3 has the digitizer problem. Perhaps a harder chassis would help reduce these hardware issues. Otherwise, a much-fatter Prism is starting to look pretty good.

Perhaps they're adding some sort of Power Management. For instance lowering the CPU speed during low load. Like a dynamic eco hack (http://www.pstec.de/ppp). I'm just thinking out loud here. I would think the SD slot would also increase power needs.
We're all going to by whining terribly if the battery life is measured in hours.

I don't think battery technology has improved but display technology may have.

One thing Palm has always strived for is good battery life.
This is part of the reason there wasn't a color Palm back when everyone was asking for it and most Pocket PCs were in color.
I'm very interested in the Vc (if that's going to be its name) I'll finally have the color screen I love and the small, slim form factor I've lusted after.

Update

Scott @ 11/9/2000 3:47:38 PM #
Is the 3.5 update available?
RE: Update
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/9/2000 11:51:23 PM #
It's not formally "available" through Palm. You can, however, download PalmOS 3.5 and install it via a backdoor methodology. I just completed the upgrade and it worked perfectly -- not a single problem. Instructions for doing this are available here: http://reviews.pdalive.com/palmos35.html

Where exactly is 3.5?

Whoops! I included the wrong link. The page which describes the process of upgrading to PalmOS 3.5 is here: http://www.palmguru.com/pageView.php?tmp=1&id=19

Yes. Palm SO 3.5 is a available now but it is not free. They are asking you to pay $14.95!!!!

How much guys?

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/9/2000 6:42:34 PM #
I'm not going to write a long comment here. I'm tired of these stories. Palm will sell this item at a high price, thinking we actually care. Like we have lot's of money to spend and we'll keep upgrading for nicer looking devices doing the same thing. There will be issues to deal with (batteries, etc.) of course. I just wish that Palm would take their heads out of their asses and start creating and developing that OS.

Man, there are some bitter & twisted people around these days... and it's all Palm's fault.

Sheesh, get a life.

Ya I did get a life. I left Palm. When they get their act together, then I may come back. Only dumb consumers will fall into this trap of paying hundreds of dollars for old technology.

I agree...Palm needs to update the OS befor I buy...And better come out with some sounds and better color!

Palm Vc use USB or Serial?

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/9/2000 8:23:32 PM #
It's time that Palm switch to USB for faster connection. Will Palm Vc use USB???

Vc vs. Color Clie

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/10/2000 1:08:36 PM #
We all knew that this would happen. Color and small form factor unite in a Palm device. In fact, I've been wanting that for a while, being I'm an avid Palm V user and wouldn't mind some colors to spice things up.

But what hasn't been stated on this board yet is the competition between the tentatively-named Vc and the color version of the Sony Clie. I'll tell you right now that if I were given a choice I'd go for the sony, with a jog dial and a expansion slot that has a lot of backing (although all the backing comes from Sony itself). Even sony's reputation is good from consumers.

It shall be interesting to see the release date of the Clie sister device, whether it be before or after the release of the "Vc".

Here, Here! I'm getting a Clie soon, which I'll probably sell to get a Color Clie. I just hope that Sony can update their version of the Palm Desktop with TRUE USB speeds and connections.

Vc processor speed? Number of colours?

I.M. Anonymous @ 11/19/2000 1:12:16 AM #
The Vc sounds like the machine to take on the colour WinCe machines and put Palm back in the running in the hi-specs race.
But will it have a faster processor? And will it support a miserable 256 colours or be more like the Prism? Palm have kept us waiting long enough for faster machines. And until they produce them, they deserve all the inroads that the MS lackeys can make into their market share.

RE: Vc processor speed? Number of colours?
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/21/2000 12:42:16 PM #
I heard directly from somebody who works for palm say that if they were to release a Vc now-that is a reg palm v with a color screen being the only difference, that because of component shortages and size considerations, it would retail for $1500-$1800

RE: Vc processor speed? Number of colours?
I.M. Anonymous @ 11/24/2000 2:54:49 PM #
Oh thats bull and we all know it

As if. Don't you have something to do?
