Palm Introduces 'Designed for Palm' Raincoats

Palm, Inc. and Sanyo Fashion House have collaborated to create a new handheld-ready line of spring raincoats with a "Designed for Palm Handhelds" pocket. These luxurious raincoats, complete with a Palm logo button securing the pocket, are made for both men and women. Fashion-conscious consumers can now use the specially designed interior pocket of Sanyo's coats to securely store and easily access their Palm handhelds. Prices range from $185 to $695 at fine specialty stores nationwide.

The pocket uses a static shield lining material, waterproof liner and a laser engraved Palm logo button closure. Several coats with this feature are currently available for both men and women as part of Sanyo's Spring 2001 Collection. The upcoming Fall 2001 Collection will also feature coats with a pocket designed for Palm handhelds.

"Palm's design philosophy compels our products to be not only functional, but also fashionable and wearable," said Byron Connell, vice president, product management and planning, Palm, Inc. "Sanyo's beautifully designed raincoats exemplify these characteristics by providing Palm handheld users with a stylish new way to carry their handhelds."

"After extensive market research, Sanyo has identified that its customers are often Palm handheld users who need a pocket with greater security and accessibility," said Chris Champlin, national sales manager at Sanyo Fashion House. "Palm handhelds are a vital resource in our customers' busy lives and these new coats embody the fashion and function these customers want."

This is Legit

The day after we posted a couple of joke stories, I think I need to point out that April Fools day is over. This story is real. Silly but real. You can read the press release on Palm's site. Though if they had posted this yesterday I'd have thought they were playing a joke on us. Raincoats with a special pocket for a Palm? *sigh*

Geek chic. I embarrassed to say I'm intrigued. After a collague said she left her visor home because it wouldn't fit in the bag she was taking to church. I'd have stayed home from church rather than leave the visor. My basic requirement for a bag is that it must hold by mobile phone and both my palms

I guess this is when you know that a consumer device has truley "made it": when you start seeing stories about said device with the words "upcoming Fall 2001 Collection " in them.

Blue Jeans

Pocket watches drove the development of
the fifth pocket on jeans -- that little
one on the right. Perhaps, a hundred
years from now, all raincoats will have Palm
pockets due to turn-of-the-millenium PDAs.

Not as silly as those Palm shoulder holsters...

But it's still kind of silly to talk about a pocket having to be "specially designed" for a Pilot. To mind, all that's necessary is sufficient size (almost a given) and a velcro or similar closure at the top so you can bend down without losing your PDA. Oh, and it needs to be on the inside, of course.

The typical "cigarette pocket" in most coats is generally good enough.
