OmniSky Offers Free Wireless Modem with Service

OmniSky Corporation has introduced a free-modem offer for users of Palm and Handspring handhelds who sign up for a year of the OmniSky service. The modems work with the Palm V series or the Visor Platinum, Prism, and Edge.

They give two options. Under the first, subscribers pay a flat fee of $40 per month with an annual contract. Under the second option, subscribers pre-pay $360 for a year of service, which is equivalent to $30 per month. Subscribers who purchase a modem for $300, and activate either service plan are eligible for a $300 mail-in rebate. The offer is valid through June 30, 2001.

Customers may purchase the required modem and software, and subscribe to the OmniSky service on the OmniSky Web site or through participating retail, e-tail or catalog outlets, including: Amazon, AT&T Wireless retail stores, CDW, CompUSA, Datavision, Franklin Covey, Fry’s, Insight, J&R, Palm Gear, Micro Center, PC Connection, RCS Computer Experience, Staples, and Verizon Wireless.

I want my Omnisky

MadMax @ 5/4/2001 11:09:01 PM #
Ok, now that I've gotten all comfy cozy with my new M505, I find myself wishing big time that my Omnisky modem worked on this new unit. Yes, I see they're trying to do their best at blowing out the Minstrel V (as well as others) with the current 'Fire Sale' but gee Wally, it's not like no one knew the M50x's were coming. I'm also one of those [5000+] original "Beta testers" for Omnisky who got in at the "charter member rates" (which is basically list less 15%; as long as I stay an active subscriber). What I'm not ready to do is plunk down $300 plus for a new modem and/or prepay for a full years service. I think we may see some competitiveness on the next go around when it comes to wireless Palm services, or at least some alternative service plans.
Until any of this happens, I'm currently using 2 Palms! One for web & E-mail, and one for everything else.
Crazy huh?

Why just the Palm V, I think a company should try to get a larger customer base. Omni-Sky should develop a standard to be used by Palm IIIxe owners.

Novatel Wireless, the company who makes the wireless modems OmniSky uses, also makes a III series version. You might ask OmniSky if you can work a deal: buy the year's service plan and have them send you the $300 and you'll buy your own modem. Worth a try.

whats the catch

Wireless worth it?

Aral Balkan @ 5/5/2001 11:08:54 PM #
Is wireless access on a PDA really worth $40/mo? I already pay about that much for my cellular. If only someone would combine the two and offer a flat-fee... I'm sure this is how its going to be in the future.

Wireless TRG

If this deal were available for my TRGPro, I'd take 'em up on it in a heartbeat!

The TRGpro can use the Novatel Minstrel III wireless modem. It might be worth your time to talk to OmniSky, too. The HandEra 330 will also be able to use it.
