RIM Wins Wireless E-mail Patent
Research In Motion, maker of the Blackberry, has won a patent to protect its method of directing e-mail to wireless devices, which could force Palm Inc. to license its technology. RIM said U.S. Patent No. 6,219,694 lets it claim ownership over its Single Mailbox Integration technology. This lets a user have a single e-mail address for both its desktop computer and mobile device, with the PC forwarding messages on to the device as needed.
RIM is already suing Glenayre Electronics for violating its trademark and patent. If they are successful, analysts said Palm and others could be forced to license RIM's technology. "If they win this case the barriers to entry will be erected and they will have a sustainable competitive advantage,'' said J.P. Morgan analyst Paul Coster.
Palm has been saying for months that they will be releasing a successor to the aging VIIx. The new wireless device, typically referred to in rumors as the m700 series, will have real-time e-mail reception. This means that device constantly looks for new e-mail and notifies the user when some is received.
This device has been referred to as the "Blackberry killer" because Palm's CEO Carl Yankowski promised back in February that Palm's handheld would be better than the Blackberry. "We can do everything that (Research In Motion) does not," he said.
Using the Single Mailbox Integration technology, the BlackBerry integrates with a user's existing e-mail account providing a wireless extension of the user's regular e-mail mailbox. The user can read, compose, forward, or reply to messages from their mobile device while maintaining their single, existing e-mail address. The user can also control which messages are received on their mobile device by setting e-mail filters that monitor key words and message fields.
