IBM Demoes Speech Recognition for Palm
Last week, IBM demoed a prototype of a clip-on sled that contains a DSP (digital signal processing) chip and memory for translating speech to text. The prototype could only be used for executing commands in a contact database or appointments calendar, as well as for voice-activated phone dialing. It wasn't capable of true speech to text, where the user simply talks and their words are entered into a text-editing app. Price and availability for the final product aren't yet available.
For dialing out on the Palm, the system would interact with a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. It isn't clear whether IBM's device would have the Bluetooth chips built-in or if the Palm itself would need to handle that.

RE: 1st
think you have to read: IBM developed a unit INCLUDING a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and this Chip HAS the computing power to do that, it works stand alone, ok?
Thanks

As it stands, this isn't very useful, IMHO, however it is a start. In the last 4 or 5 years speach to text technology has come along in leaps and bounds, mostly due to hardware improvements to be sure, but software has developed too.
Voice input is the most obvious and practical means of entering data into a palm-sized device and given the improvements in processing power we are seeing being announce, I am sure in 2 to 3 years the stylus will just be used for doodling and dragging and dropping.
Sad too say though, I doubt Palm will produce the first useful voice capable device.
