Rumor: More on the Palm m515 and m130

Palm is close to releasing the m515 and m130, according to PDAGeek. It goes on to confirm much of the information revealed in a PIC article last week on these new models. Citing an un-named source, the site confirms that the m515 is an updated version of the m505 with a brighter screen and 16 MB of RAM.

The most important new information of PDAGeek's article is a picture of the m130, which it describes as "basically a color m125".

According the the information leaked last week, the m130 will have a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and not be powered by AAAs like the m125.

Both devices run Palm OS 4.1.

If PDAGeek's information is correct and these are ready to ship "any time now", could Palm be planning to announce these as early as PalmSource next week?

There are two entries in Best Buy's inventory system that might be for these models, though no product names are given. The system has entries for a $280 handheld with SKU 4510452 and PLU P80704US that could be for the m130. It also has an entry for a $400 handheld with SKU 4510504 and PLU P80805US that might be the m515. Both of these are listed as being in stock on March 10.

Thanks to PDAGeek and the Best Buy employee who submitted this info. -Ed

I wish this was what came out last year...

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 11:53:42 AM #
I own a m505 (after having owned the Pilot 5000, PalmPilot Pro, Palm V, and then Palm IIIc.) While I WOULD LOVE to have the brighter screen of the m515 (which it seems will be as bright as the iPAQ if not more so from my sources, but same 160x160 res.) there is no way I am paying $400 to replace my m505 for just that and an extra 16 megs. It makes a good choice for those who waited on upgrading their Palm V or IIIc.

That said I REALLY hope we see a "m515" like unit running 320x320 with OS 5.0 before the year is out but I suspect until March 2003 we won't see the real next generation color "Palm V."

Yep, I'm right with you. If this 515 is only a brighter screen and 16meg ram, then this will be the first time ever, that I have not ran out and bought the newest, top of the line Palm. I've had a 5000, III, V, and 505 up until now.

320x320, however, will be reason to go buy this 515 if that is the case, which we are pretty sure won't be.

Palm is playing catch up again with the Clie. Why would you buy a M515 when you can get the same features plus a good screen with the T615C? I am sorry I have been patient with Palm and waited and waited but its to late now. I have a Clie now and am not looking back.

RE: I wish this was what came out last year...
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 4:43:47 PM #

I would very much like to get a Clie, but I really don't feel like having to go and buy 2 new cradles, 128m expansion memory (SD/MS), modem, new stylus, and case (all of which I have bought for my m505). So the total cost to just "switch" would be over $700. I'll at least give Palm credit for the Universal Connecter across all their products.

m515 Case Colors?

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 11:57:17 AM #
Anyone heard if the Patriotic Blue and Cranberry Red will be available for the m515, or if other colors will be available when this hits the shelves or will we wait 6months for this "feature"?

RE: m515 Case Colors?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 11:58:27 AM #
Seriously, I actually LIKE the Blue Color, I hope Palm will offer this in the m515 when it FIRST introduces this model.

I second that!

Likewise, I was glad I could get my wife a red device.

Never mind the color of the unit, what about the color/quality of the screen, because that's what *I* am looking at when I use my PDA?

Its another Sony user who thinks what's right for him is the only possible answer for anyone. Anyone who disagrees with him is totally wrong. Get through through your thick skull: everyone isn't the same.

Anyone know if the m515 WILL be available in the three colors or will they stick with the dull one?

Who said anything about the Sony in this thread? The red and blue cases were options for the PALM m505!

I want the red one. Chicks dig it.

RE: m515 Case Colors?
I.M. Anonymous @ 2/3/2002 10:39:51 PM #
Who cares what color the case is ? It reminds me of those goofy sickly colors Mac came out with. Who wants to take out a flaming red handheld, maybe to match their outfit ! Is the processing of information to be reduced like so many other things in the land of the phoney to mere cosmetic crap. Paint you house red with bright blue trim and canary yellow accents you bunch of color freaks, but give me a machine that looks like a machine not a fashion accessory, ya bunch of overstimulated fake fur wearing freaks !!!!! Put on your lipstick and makeup and pick the color of your handheld to accent the subtle colors in your $25.00 a tube synthetic lip gloss. How shallow, how demeaning how absurd !!! Only in America.

I hope they make one in yellow. I've always wanted yellow.

The m130

peter167 @ 1/31/2002 11:55:30 AM #
The m130s will be more popular than the m515s because there are no color products in the $300 price range right now.

The m515s will sell for only 5 months or so and than the OS5 units will definitely take some sales out of it, unless Palm cuts its price. If the m515 price is cut, what about the m130s? That is just awkward.

Hey, don't manufacture too many m515s, just in case. But the m130s will be selling like hotcakes right now, if they are priced $299. I will definitely recommend it for any one who has yet owned a Palm PDA. (Provided it runs on rechargeable batteries.)

>...The most important new information of PDAGeek's

I don't believe the picture of new m130 is REAL. It looks so fake to me especially the color of screen.
But Palm is moving on anyway. Let us say "WOW" !

RE: The m130
Ed @ 1/31/2002 12:09:36 PM #
> It looks so fake to me

What it looks like to me is the images graphic artists put together to be shown on Palm's site. None of these are actual photos of handhelds; they are all composite shots with the screens taken from something like POSE. This is because it's almost impossible to get a good photo of a handheld's screen. I know; I've tried and failed many times.

Of course, someone not working for Palm could have done the same thing. But PDAGeek's source has come through in the past with info that has turned out to be correct.

Handspring's Prism is available for $299.- from Handspring's website, that means that it should be available from other places at well below your 300 dollar range. For example BuyDig.com - $260.-

One can still easily find Palm IIIc models for less than $300.- on the net (not from Palm.com) For example, $213 from BuyDig.com or $239 from Compu AMerica.

The PalmM505 can even be had for $315, which could fall within your $300. range again (again buydig.com)

Of course you can also get refurnished units, including a SOny N610 for $323.

Considering Palm sends refurbushed units to users who have had problems (e.g. battery).

All it takes is a tiny bit of research (try http://shopper.cnet.com/shopping/0-205442-301-0-0.html?tag=st.sh.1257.dir.list-205442) before you make statements like 'there are no color products in the $300 price range right now'.

RE: Fake image
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 12:18:33 PM #
Why so quick to say it's fake? Just to be the first one to say it?

The image definately has some jpg artifacting, but that only means it was compressed too far. As for the screen not looking totally right, there's *no way* to get an accurate picture of the actual display because it's just not possible.

RE: The m130
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 12:27:23 PM #
OK, I am sorry for the word "Fake", but all I want to say is " It's too good to be true" ..

RE: The m130
peter167 @ 1/31/2002 12:27:50 PM #
Mr, IM. All you are trying to tell me is that you can get PDAs cheaper than MSRP prices.

By the way, why don't you tell me a used T615c is $300?

There are no legitimate color handhelds that are $299 and yet provides standard expansion capabilities, including Sd & UC. This price is okay for first time users who demand a color screen, and suited for those who owned a m10x series who want to upgrade right now.

By the way, you could buy the rumored m130 less than $300. That's for sure, if there is really a m130 coming.

RE: The m130
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 12:35:38 PM #
>There are no legitimate color handhelds that are $299 >and yet provides standard expansion capabilities, >including Sd & UC.

So you are saying the Handspring Prism with 65k colors has less colors than any other Color Palm?

So the Springboard accesory allowing CF card as expansion capability is not a standard one ?

Gimme a break

RE: The m130
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 12:39:26 PM #
Yes, the accessories are available but at an extra cost. Hope you understand that. When you add any Memplug-like device and a Prism, the price is over $300. That's why there are no legitimate handhelds that are $300 with standard expansion capabilities, memory expansion (SD) and peripherals (UC).

Do you research before you speak out. Don't tell me there is a special somewhere that the Prism with some springboard device is on special for $300.

To Peter167
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 12:42:42 PM #
So you would rather pay MSRP than prices that are actually below that ?

RE: The m130
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 12:47:58 PM #
> By the way, why don't you tell me a used T615c is
>$300?

No nO NO, you are wrong, that's not the case for a used T615c, It's the price for a USED M505/M515.

RE: The m130
peter167 @ 1/31/2002 12:49:26 PM #
"So you would rather pay MSRP than prices that are actually below that?"

Don't try to put words into my mouth. And I really don't know where do you get this idea.

If you are jealous that your company cannot manufacture a unit like m130, please go home and tell your boss.

M130:
Color
Meomory Expansion (SD)
UC

All Handspring handhelds have no standard memory expansion capabilities.

RE: The m130
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 1:01:13 PM #
"All Handspring handhelds have no standard memory expansion capabilities"

So only SD is a standard memory expansion capability and CF is not ?

RE: The m130
peter167 @ 1/31/2002 1:03:29 PM #
My definition of no memory expansion capabilities is that how can you plug a CF card or any memory card in your Visor whatever without a springboard module that is purchased seperately?

Get it?

You are a real smart***

capability talks about being able to have it. With a Springboard, one is able to have "it". This That brings the total price to 308 (260 + 48 for the springboard) which by normal people's standard 'falls in the range of $300.-" - your words

RE: The m130
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 1:08:29 PM #
I happen to own a Palm M505 and definitely no stock in any of the PDA manufacturers. Just cant stand stupid remarks and then claiming others are trolls

RE: The m130
peter167 @ 1/31/2002 1:09:35 PM #
Why don't you tell me there is a 20% discount just on businessdepot last month?

Wake up. If it is $308 (a Prism plus module), the m130 will also be available somewhere on the net for $260. It is useless to compare street price with retail price. Don't forget that only the Americans will benefit from these low prices. The Asians, Europeans, Austrialians, Africans and even the Canadians can not easily find devices substantially cheaper than MSRP.

You got a good deal with $308 for a Prism plus module. By saying this, will that make you happier?

By the way, a Prism plus module is also substantially bigger the m130. So the unit is more subtantial and it is a better deal because you got more volume and weight, according to general law of Physics. The more the better.

RE: The m130
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 1:16:56 PM #
What now, that is completely against what your very first comment was. Now you just keep on adding to it to try to get it your way. There was no talk about size, neither MSRP.

Europeans / Asians typically do not even get to pay the US MSRP, so you cannot even bring this into the equation now as it has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Would a Prism/Springboard make me happy ? No way. Neither would the M130 for that matter...

But fact remains that, against what you said, their is a product out there within the $300 range with standard expansion capabilities, whether you like it or not. Some people may prefer the Prism others will prefer the M130 and yet others will prefer neither (like me).

Capability talks about being able to have it. That's right. You are also CAPABLE to win a Handspring Prism for free. But the chance is just slim.

RE: The m130

Mr. I.M.(2)

You could also win a Handspring Prism for free also. The chance is very slim though, whether you like it or not.

Yes, it is legitimate for anyone to get a Handspring Prism for $1 plus S/H on ebay. That's against what your said. The Prism is in the range of $10 for a color handheld. Does that makes your statement stupid?

Hey, true Palm fans. I am not crazy today.

For the last two posts, I just tried acting like Palm bashers and talked the way they talked. Being ignorant yet saying something that is not related at all. Throw in any possibility of more than 0% and assume it is 100%.

It is too difficult to think and act like a basher. Life is too difficult over there.

RE: The m130
volcanopele @ 1/31/2002 3:26:15 PM #
The Visors may not have a "standard memory expansion" but you know, I really could care less. I have an option as to what memory expansion option I want. I am not forced to used what Palm or Sony force me to use. For example, I use Smartmedia cards with my Visor. My dad already had a card reader and a camera that used smartmedia. So I didn't have to buy a card reader for it. Plus, my memory expansion is cheaper than SD or MMC. I have a 128 MB card for my Visor that cost me 50 bucks. Sony users only until recently had a card that cheap, and only then through a limited time offer. SD and MMC card cost much more. So while we have to buy an adapter, we at least have the option (along with Handera users, don't want to forget about you guys).
